Holy shit, @246baje. Those photos are breathtaking. How incredibly awful.
Can anyone in/near Tampa share their plans for this? I have a friend/coworker who recently moved to Tampa and she's never been through anything like this before. She's not sure what she and her husband plan to do at this point, but I can tell she's scared.

isabel I'm a lurker but I live in Tampa and have been here for 10 years. Your friend should see if she is in an evacuation zone. We are in an early evacuation zone so we have tentative plans to go to a hotel about 20 mins inland if we are told to evacuate. Given the current Eastern projections it seems like it might not be as bad on this side of state but that could still change. She should just be prepared with a plan as to where to go if they do live in an evacuation zone. The zones are based on potential storm surge.

Really depends on what area of Tampa. We have friends in S. Tampa/Downtown/Bayshore Blvd who are going a little north because the area is prone to flooding. While those who are further north (Brandon, Wesley Chapel, etc) who are staying but ready with extra water.
If you're in St Pete/Clearwater then I would evacuate inland.

Prayers to those who have already been hit. The images we're seeing are horrible.
In Miami, we have mandatory evacuations for zones A and B as well as the Keys. Mercy hospital in Miami has been evacuated and the ER has closed. There is still no gas in many areas, but officials say trucks are coming with more. The ports will remain open to allow fuel shipments to continue.

I just asked. She's in Carrollwood Village.
Should be fine but likely some flooding...so depends on how risky she wants to be. She definitely needs to have water and food ready for at least a week.
Problem is Florida been hit so hard with rain this year already so likely there will be flooding issues but will recede but does take time.
Sorry I'm not more of a help...she could try and get a hotel room in Wesley chapel or Brooksville and play it by ear.

Yes it appears that the GA &SC coast will need to prepare - probably not a direct hit but still a pretty strong storm by the time t gets there- depending on tides, timing, and storm surge ther could still be lots of flooding.
Ir ma destroyed four of the most solid government buildings on the French-administered portion of nearby St. Martin, an island of about 75,000 people, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said in Paris.
More than 1 million without power in PR. Culebra and Fajardo were hit the hardest from what I've read.
Hi, mostly lurker here, but I think you have family in PR? We have booked a trip there for September 30-October 7... 2 nights at an airbnb in Luquillo, 3 on Vieques, 2 in OSJ. I'm not at all concerned about my trip and whether it happens or not, but wondering how best to proceed? If the island can handle tourists I want to give them my money, but obviously I don't want to strain resources. And I'm unsure how even to communicate with my hotels and such with all the power outages.... should I just wait and see? Assume I'm not going? Again, I really really just want to do whatever is best and easiest for the people there. And the US news coverage of this in PR has left a lot to be desired. Thanks for any input and I hope your family is doing well.
Another lurker in the same position, Arriving in PR 10/2-10/7 and unsure of what to do at this point. Seems like they avoided the eye but we were staying in OSJ and then at the St. Regis.

The hurricane hit like five minutes ago. How are these real questions?
My guess is that if you want to go to actually work and volunteer, then go. If not, you will be in the way and just send your vacation dollars as a donation.

THANK YOU. I'm in Coastal Florida worried about the high probability of losing my home to storm surge. Reading this shit is just pissing me off. Sorry you can't call your hotel in PR which could be fucking underwater right now.

Right. I still haven't heard from all my family members, so no. I don't know about the St. Regis. You have weeks before you're planned travel. Give us a fucking minute.

Not sure if anyone is looking for confirmation of family in USVI but this page has a lot of info, photos and check ins including a "safe" database. We were able to confirm that my cousin in St. John is safe. I'm so sad for that beautiful island and its residents, the photos are terrible.

You're right, we cancelled our reservations and will see where our money is needed once more is known. Apologies for the insensitive timing.

Ugh, Floyd. I remember that one and this feels so similar with it being so strong, hitting the islands, and still not knowing the track. I was in Florida at the time, in a flimsy ass condo.

I hope you hear from them soon. It's scary waiting to hear from loved ones and not being able to do anything. My prayers are with your family and for you.

Just heard from my aunt and cousin. Cousin still has no power. Aunt I was most worried about actually still has power and running water.
I saw a video and at least parts of Condado were flooded.
