Just got alert on my Disney TA group that Disney is shutting down at 5 on Saturday. You will be safe and taken care off. Try to stock up on snacks for the room though.
is disney taking reservations? can people evacuate to their buildings & shelter in orlando??? I assume their buildings are good to withstand a storm.
I have actually heard that a lot of Florida residents do just that. The are closing MCO on Saturday and the Orange County schools are closed Monday.
My in-laws are in central FL, so I'm concerned but not too worried, especially since they have a storm shelter built into their house. My SIL, their daughter, lives just outside of Tampa but since she's married to a prepper, they're staying put last I heard.
My parents are in central florida, they seem unconcerned.

Jesus this is terrifying.
I hope everyone who is still waiting to hear from friends/family in the Caribbean are able to get in touch and they are OK. And all of my good thoughts are going to those of you still in the path of this storm. May you and your families be safe.
My sister and her fiance are in a mandatory evacuation zone along Tampa Bay. They have a dog friendly place to go that is super comfortable.
They just put on facebook that they are waiting for tomorrow to make a decision.
What is wrong with them?!?!? ARGH. I just yelled at her, and told my parents to do the same. H ripped into her fiance. Fingers crossed we get through to them.

Have they been in a hurricane before? Once roads and bridges are closed they won't be able to change their minds.

My family is being equally stubborn. It's infuriating.

Not sure. Nothing like this as adults, I don't think. He spent the first 13 years of his life in a country that gets monsoons. They've been in Florida for a while, but both of them got there long after Rita. They were further inland for most of their time there, but last year, just bought a condo last year that is on the water. Like a little inlet off of Tampa bay is a few yards from their property.

Talked to my brother and SIL-they live in Boyton Beach. Luckily, my parents got sense into them-and pretty much booked them airline tickets -non negiotable. They had to drive from Boyton Beach to Jacksonville Florida last night---they left at 8 at night and arrived there at 4am. Their flight left this afternoon and they are arriving in Baltmore, they will then drive to NJ to stay with my parents.

How far is this dog friendly place that is comfortable?
If people who AREN'T in a mandatory evacuation zone would stay put, more people who are would be able to get out.
Palm Beach County is being told that if you are not in a mandatory evacuation zone, stay put because there is no gas. People are stranded on the highways with no gas. If you are in a mandatory evacuation zone, you need to go miles (for instance, if you are on the water, go inland into an area that is safer), not hundreds of miles.

Good advice and that is exactly what we're planning to do. I live in Tampa in an evacuation zone and we have a hotel reserved for Saturday check in (in hindsight we should have done Friday check in maybe) about 25 minutes inland in a safer area that shouldn't be impacted by the storm surge like our neighborhood is since we're surrounded by the bay here.
I know that is the most sensible thing to do, but I keep second guessing myself since so many people are going much further and leaving the state. At this point, that is our best option though unless we want to go to my hometown in the panhandle and stay with family (about 4 hours north). But all the traffic with everyone leaving gives us pause on that, even though we would take the back roads and not the highways and we have a full tank of gas.

It's about 8 miles (20 minutes). They also have friends who are offering places to stay who live a bit further away. Not sure exactly.
The water level has already risen to the same height as their dock. So flooding is pretty much a given. Their first floor is just garage/storage, but still. Why get yourself stranded?
I waiver between being concerned for safety and pissed AF at how selfish it is. If they get stuck or hurt and need to be rescued, they are putting EMTs at risk for no reason. They are healthy, mobile, and have money and resources.

My parents are in Orlando and they aren't to worried either.
I wouldn't be surprised if the lost power for a few days, but I've never seen any kind of flooding in inland Florida. The biggest problem will be trees falling on houses and cars.

My inlaws are in West Palm Beach and sheltering in place as is being recommended. They are cool as cucumbers, have done everything to prepare (shutters on their house and houses of all relatives nearby, have water and food and flashlights and all that jazz) but are preparing for what sounds like a really nasty hit. I am so nervous for them.

My sister is in Delray Beach and this is what she told us. She was told to stay put and shelter in place. Today was the first time she seemed concerned, to be honest. She's only lived in FL for 3 years, so she has little to no experience with hurricanes. She was in NJ during Sandy and while she had no issues with flooding, she was without power for 2 weeks.

Can impose a potentially really stupid question? Can they use a semi truck and rescue hordes of people stuck on the highways? And/or evacuate them that way? It wouldn't be the most pleasant or comfortable, but it would be efficient.
I'm terrified for everyone. Our friends who live in South Tampa aren't leaving until tomorrow morning. Guys, she is 8 mos pg and they have a 4yo. There is no way they are going to be ok driving to our house in Atlanta. I'm trying to beg DH to talk some sense to his friend but he keeps saying the friend's wife is the one demanding to come up here. She would be better off staying right near a major hospital in Orlando instead. A fellow poster said her DH's cousin drove from Miami, leaving at 1am and didn't make it to Atlanta until 17hrs later. That is an extra 5hrs due to traffic for just two adults
this is like the insane time Houston tried to evacuate for Hurricane Rita (weeks after Katrina). That's why Houston didn't evacuate....it's just not feasible for a city our size. If I had to leave, I'd def. try to start my drive at like 2-4 AM & at least now (according ot google maps) the freeways are not ALL red...just some slow downs

o not really...that's just not safe- from a crash standpoint or a breathing oxygen standpoint. I can't imagine how you'd coordinate trucks to get down tehre...convince people to leave their cars on the roadways (which would be blocking others who refused to get in a tractor trailer), etc.
NOLA did have lot sof motor coach buses lined up to evacuate people - but not enough.

How would they get the truck to them?
I don't know. I really don't. I guess drive up the shoulder? Or have meeting points in town, and then don't drive too fast? I've never been in or near anything like this. I'm terrified on their behalf, and probably being irrational.
I ended up at a community meeting tonight where the guest speaker was from fire dept talking about disaster prep. Go figure.
Apparently I'm a disaster magnet. Hurricanes, earthquakes, taken shelter from tornadoes and tsunamis...
Their biggest suggestion was to have a landline. I was like, no, I hear you and agree with your reasons, but you will not convince people. Its only 10/mo, but even super prepared dad cancelled his.

ARGH.
Okay, you're right here. They should go.
Sorry, I am sensitive to all the "Get out!!" stuff I am getting. Sometimes it isn't better to get out.

Yes my parents didn't make it to their destination after 11 hours (normally take 8 hours at most) because of traffic and are still 4 hours away.
They'd be better off going towards Brooksville or Ocala...if they can find a hotel room.
My in-laws are in Orlando and are "la! La! La!!!!! We're cool we got wine!"
