The cone of error right now is huge. I hope by tomorrow there's a little more certainty on the tragections. I told H we needed to decide by tomorrow if we were leaving the state or not. I am up to my eyeballs in deadlines but the good news is all the clients are in FL too so hopefully everything gets postponed? What a mess.

flying back in time to prepare my house. For years we weren't nervous about any storm, but this one is scaring all of us from SFl. Let's be safe everyone, we know what to do. Praying for everyone in the path. .
I keep hoping it will turn. My mother is in SW Florida and her house is one step up from a trailer. Her car also has a window that has been stuck down forever. The good news is that my brother lives with her now rather than in the Keys. The bad news is that he's dumb and will probably run off in search of waves.
this is so bad...I hate that there is so much uncertainty & FL looks to be impacted in some way. I also really feel for the small Caribbean islands- limited means to evacuate, not much extra money to buy supplies, and a general bad situation all around.
I'm worried about them, too - if south FL is directly impacted as well, I imagine that will be a huge issue for them as far as getting supplies for recovery.
I mean, I'm worried about us, too, but your options are MUCH more limited on an island.
My brother lives in PR. I have a ton of family and friends there. Praying for everyone. I would be nice for the news in general to be more concerned about PR and other Caribbean islands.

L and I will likely evacuate on Thursday. If it looks like it's going to hit as a cat 4 or 5, my H will be evacuating with us - otherwise he will stay. We don't have anything of value to loot, but I know he will be a huge help to our neighbors. I worry about him staying, though, because it won't be pretty no matter how it hits. Thankfully we're inland enough that we fall into a cat 4 flood zone, so I just have to hope that the maps are correct and the engineers have done their jobs.
My godmother's daughter/family own a marina in the Caribbean - on a very small island that is basically just them. I'm terribly worried. I'm scheduled to be in DC next week so if my parents/brother need to GTFO I won't even be home.
We heard from most of the family in PR (which is 99% of extended fam, with some others living in FL). They are supposedly prepared and are now just waiting for Irma to hit.
Scary, so scary. I haven't felt such doom since watching the satellite images of Katrina approaching New Orleans.
My geography of all those little Caribbean islands is rough. Who is getting hit first? Looks like Puerto Rico is the first larger island in the path?
I think Anguilla and Virgin Islands are just east of PR. Looks like they'd all be getting the south side of the storm, not sure if eye will make landfall until Cuba or FL Keys based on current path.
I have family in Central FL and I'm trying to get them to come hang out with us in Atlanta for a bit. Unsuccessfully so far.

Can you leave keys with neighbors or hidden under a fake plant or something?

I think lesser Antilles, then virgin islands, then pr. Bahamas is really long so they'll be mixed in. After pr Hispaniola (Haiti dr) then Cuba and keys. Off the top of my head that's more or less east to west.
bimbi284, your people may be the first to give ground account. If you think there's anything of use to pass along I will.
I don't think h will get a day off this month! Not a sympathy call. Just that they're all working balls to the wall to do everything possible add a sliver of reassurance. Meanwhile trump has to be jonesing for golf.

My H can let them in lol, but both will feel weird that I'm not there.
I'm so worried about everyone in Irma's path, especially those in the islands who are unable to evacuate. I hope people in Florida and surrounding states are able to evacuate safely and in time once it's deemed necessary. Thinking about the potential for devastation and loss of life of it hits all the projected areas directly and at such an intense strength is nauseating.
Floridians aren't going to be able to leave the state en masse. Only 1 road out of keys. They'll be given priority just like with coastal tx vs Houston. It's a long long state (easily 12 hours key west to border, and that border doesn't make you safer, with no traffic) with only a few main ways to get out. You can't radially evacuate.
It will be more local evac. Get inland past range of storm surge. Go to a place with concrete reinforced stair well. Don't be on top floor.
Building codes post Andrew have gotten much stricter (like the windows where my grandpa is are basically like windshields.) It's like if I had to choose an earthquake in Japan or Kansas I know what I'd choose.
At least in broward most schools in the last few decades don't have windows, so they open for shelter. I'd imagine most of fl is like that.
