It is now at 185 miles per hour and is expected to be closer to PR than previously projected.
Is it supposed to be 185 when it lands? Can anything stand after being hit with 185 mph winds?
Yes, the question is for how long and if it's additionally hit with objects. I'm going to guess much of the Caribbean structures can't. The house my uncle was born in has seen many high wind hurricanes. One, a 4 I think (before my time) sat on island for 3 days.
Not so fun fact: pilots might eject at 500mph. And live to tell the tale.

As of now it is expected to remain Cat 5 when it hits PR. I hope it goes down. Most houses and buildings in PR are made of cinder blocks and cement. I was living in PR when Hurricane Hugo hit and we didn't have power for a month. Some areas in PR are looking at a possible 3-4 months without electricity. I keep praying that it changes trajectory and lessens in intensity.
I posted in ML, but I have my mom's godmother and my uncle coming up from the Keys and lower east coast of FL respectively on Thursday. We are in NJ & originally this was all thought to be an issue up here. We won't know anything until it hits land as to what we will get, but it is so slow moving that it could sit in the warm water for days.
I cannot imagine what you FL folks are going through, except I've been through Superstorm Sandy. Keep safe!!!

Also, another lesson learned- get to know your neighbors. Know who is staying & who is going- get their contact info (email/phone). Who has kids (babies) or where the elderly live or anybody with special medical needs.
Order stuff on amazon NOW..it should have time to get to you...remember delivery may be slow to resume (still haven't had mail/UPS) at my house.
Ditto sushi - priority needs to be given to those who NEED to evacuate (elderly, sick, health issues, storm surge). Houston learned the hard way that it's just not possible for EVERYBODY that WANTS to leave to go- we all get stuck.
I've been reading the water conditions and it is likely to grow even stronger since it has yet to hit the really warm water (86 degrees F+). The only thing that is going to weaken it is land, unfortunately.
My H was preparing to deploy to help Harvey victims and is now on hold with the plan to be deployed to help in the wake of Irma. He will be gone at least 30 days, but up to 60. The only thing I am worried about is that we are potentially in the path and I may be left to pick up our pieces alone with two kids. ::breaths into paper bag::
I am stunned at the number of disasters going on/getting close. The fires. Hurricane Harvey, now Irma. It makes me worry so much because our government sucks right now.

The latest models have it making landfall directly over my parents' new house that they literally just built. Fortunately it's their second home, and they are at their other residence in the northeast right now, but it will still be heartbreaking if their brand new dream home is destroyed.
The Floridian and Puerto Rican CEPers are in my thoughts. I hope you are all able to weather this without any loss of life or significant property damage. Please stay safe and keep us updated as you can.
I'm seeing the turn north slightly east to what was posted. Basically just going straight up through the state. It could be disaster in every county. That unprecedented as most move across the state
Unfortunately FL isn't the type of land to break up storm too much. Cuba and Hispaniola are much better for that.
This will be fil's first. I have no idea if h has called.
Fortunately, my cousin's husband and my other cousin (both surgeons) will not have to stay in the hospital where they work, so they are going home to be with their families, which is good, because both fams have small kiddos - the youngest being 3 mos old.
These are the PR cousins. I haven't heard anything about the cousin in FL.

I was thinking exactly that. A one-two punch with severe hurricanes seems highly unusual. Add the massive fires in and it seems unprecedented. I know that all of it is related to climate chang, and we have "leaders" who pretend that climate change isn't real.

It happened in 2005 with Katrina and Rita.
But yes it kind of feels like the end of days. I don't think I'm even joking. Harvey killed my usual optimism.

this just popped up on my feed- scary when you see it all laid out like this
Republican politicians tell me that climate change is a hoax. We have to believe them because they love Jesus and get all their data through prayer. It should be noted, however, that climate change is a particularly elaborate hoax, one so devious that it seems to be impacting our weather. Just more evidence of the danger of liberal lies.
Remember to ignore anything you witness that conflicts with your bigoted beliefs, and Have a Blessed Day.
