Last year and the year I had costumes picked well in advance for trick or treating. I am drawing a blank this year. Help please.
DS will be 3 this year. I am hoping he gets the concept better and will actually say trick or treat and take the candy. Last year he would only talk to the people giving out toys. At that point we hadn't given him candy yet.
Do you need costume ideas? That's around the age where we started asking the girls what they wanted to be for Halloween. We had read enough Halloween themed board books that they "got it" and picked out ideas based on what characters in the books had done. But, we're a homemade costume family, so we were open to making whatever random thing they asked. We had robots, bumblebees, and unicorns for the past few years. This year one of them is going to be a monkey and one will be a banana, which is going to be hilarious since they're in separate classes now. One of them is just going to be a random lone banana. I keep cracking up thinking of it, but they came up with the plan themselves!
Have you gone down the Pinterest rabbit hole? The last 2 years, we've done family costumes. Last year we did Monsters, Inc. and the year before I was a beekeeper and DD was a bee. Pick something that DS is interested in and start with that. I think when DS was 3 I just bought a dinosaur costume on Amazon.

I love the idea of family costumes. DH was very into it DS's first Halloween, but then we didn't really do trick or treating the next couple of years. Last year DS was Marshall from Paw Patrol. He said he wants to be Chase this year lol.
I'm probably going to find myself in the pinterest rabbit hole because I think family costumes are funny when there is a baby. DS is still obsessed with his little sister so he'd probably be on board.
I just let the kids choose. DS chose a Halo military costume and because he can read now, he keeps talking about Halo military guys. He has zero idea what Halo is, so it kind of makes me laugh.
He refused SWAT because it was not labeled "Black Cop" so Halo military cop was a sea change. Hoping this means he will stop telling everyone he wants to be a "black cop" because I think some people were really waiting for me to bust out face paint so they could roast me.
DD and friends are going as fraternity guys and middle DD and friends are doing the 7 Dwarves (as of now, this may change).
Long way of saying - let the kids choose! I think at three DS chose a dragon we had in the dress up chest.
When DD was 3 and DS was a baby, we let her pick her costume and then chose DS's to match. She wanted to be a witch, so we made her brother be a frog. So it looked like she turned her little brother into a frog.
So if DS wants to be Chase, you could let DD be a puppy Skye or a fire hydrant (ha ha, don't let him pee on her), or Chickoletta (and you could be the Mayor!) or the kitty whose name I've forgotten.

I don't think DS gets the concept of Halloween yet. Maybe I need to start reading some Halloween books. He likes the movie Cars right now, but I don't know how to do a costume for that.
Last year we were a skeleton family and the year before we had the older boys so we did a batman theme.
welly01, I have not gone down the pinterest rabbit hole yet. I am on my way as soon as I find some time. It is blocked at work.
DH will do whatever I ask as long as it isn't too crazy, and we won't have the older boys because Halloween is on a Tuesday.
xctsclrx, There's a good Daniel Tiger one with all the characters talking about how they chose a different costume. That's what sparked our robots the year we did that.

Ds started choosing his costume at 3 and it's been so fun! This year we are the batman family. We all have black and yellow batman costumes (because he wanted us all to be the same batman). He also debated have me be batgirl, little bro Robin and dad Alfred but he decided he wanted us all to match. Dad got a t shirt. I got a caped tshirt and the little guys got costumes.
The boys will be just turned 1 and 3. DS1 is going to be a firefighter and DS2 is going to be a dalmation. Our wagon is going to be the fire truck. This is about half because DS1 loves fire trucks and half because I thought it would be a cute family costume.
DS1 has bright red hair and last year we (DH) dressed him up as Chucky. He didn't really know what was happening, but our neighbors all thought he was hilarious.
xctsclrx, Amazon has several Cars costumes. Several popped up, most of them look like a pit crew person. Just FYI if you want something quick and easy.
DD2 is going to be three and wants to be a monkey. We happen to have a monkey costume from when DD1 wore it when she was three. We didn't start letting DD1 pick her costume until last year when she was 4. She hasn't decided on anything for this year yet. We haven't done matching costumes because they've had different interests but that sounds super fun!

I'm going to wait a couple more weeks before we let the kids pick their costumes. DD changes her mind a lot. (And I can't remember who posted their DD talking about birthday party themes about a year ahead, and then changing a bunch of times, but my DD is the same way. So with her we need to make decisions a lot closer to the actual event.)
For those looking for books, the Spooky Pookie board book by Boynton is super cute and a quick read. DS (4yo) still loves it this time of year.
Last year DS was Baymax; we picked out the costume for him based on his interests and he loved it (was red Baymax with wings and helmet). This year we were going to do Octonauts, but he has been saying he wants to be a bear (like a grizzly, not Barnacles) so I don't know.
I always go as a Minion, because I got one of those tacky fleece union suits from Walmart that I love. I do different themed pumpkin carvings every year, and I want to base them on what Bud chooses for a costume, so I'm waiting on that.
My girls are constantly talking about Halloween, but they change their minds on what they want to be on a daily basis. So I guess we'll see. By 3 they were choosing their own costumes.
DD wants to be a horse girl again which she was last year. This means wearing what she wears to ride and adding a sparkly big belt buckle belt. Very boring in my eyes but then super easy as we don't have to buy a thing.
I think DD started picking her own costume at either 3 or 4. She really isn't into Halloween and doesn't like the scary part but has had no problems saying thank you after getting candy which just gets her more candy because she is too cute.
I love the family costumes on Pintrest but DH refuses to do anything with Halloween so it is pointless for me to try.
And enjoy the super cute costumes while you can! Ds is 5 and I have a feeling this is the start of the superhero years as that's all he wants now. His debate was between batman, captain America or Luke Skywalker. When he was 2 he was Squirt from finding nemo and the little turtle costume was so adorable!!!!

sandandsea- DS is only 3 and he's already developed an opinion on Halloween. DH wants to dress him up as Mini-Me, and I'm betting that's a no-go. Though DS does LOVE Mini-Me.

DS talks about Halloween all year long, so it's never too early for us. I just bought a skeleton tanktop and leggings from JCP so I could go as a skeleton with him this year - but of course, he no longer wants to be a skeleton. Hopefully he'll come back around.
As for DD, she was a duck when she was 1 and Elsa when she was 2. This year, I have no idea, but I'm guessing she'll have a hard time resisting a beautiful princess dress. So in an effort to dress up with both of them, I will probably be a skeleton with a tiara and a princess-y tutu.
I'm stuck. Dd wanted to be a clown last year, but with all the crazy clown stuff, I told her it was a bad year for clowns. She still wants to be a clown, and with It, that still freaks me out. I still have flashbacks from the 80s movie and refuse to see the new one.

No clue either. I have so many other things to plan and organize before I can think of Halloween. I need to ask DD what she wants to be and go from there.

Yep! 3 is when it started for us too. He HAD to be a fireman. But I'm glad he gets excited about it and has fun!

DD1 was Minnie Mouse when she was 2 last year. This year she will be Elsa. She is pretty much Elsa every day so it won't be too exciting. The baby will be Anna to match.
We don't do family costumes but DS is going to be Batman. He's been asking since the spring. I've got a tutorial pinned that I need to get started on soon.

Last year, DD (2 at the time) was batman...with a hot pink sequined costume off amazon. DH wore a batman t-shirt that he already had. I bought a $10 batman t-shirt from target (it had a cape!), and my MIL work this weird hot pink/black lace batman cape that we borrowed from my sister. We were a family of batmen. And it was adorable. Obviously.

xctsclrx , my DD starts asking about Halloween in June so it's not too early for Halloween talk. She wants to be Wonder Woman this year. DS wants to be Batman or Spider man. I was hoping I'd be able to still pick their costumes but that ended last year.
