My 6YO was obsessed with the original and loves the reboot. I'm irritated at the animation style on the reboot but the content still seems in line with the original and Lily Tomlin's voice still makes an appearance from time to time. It's actually taught DS a ton about science. Between that, Wild Kratts and the Octonauts, he wants to be a small animal vet.
ETA: I'm old but my mom is was a third grade then gifted teacher so we also have a lot of the books and I saw a lot of the episodes in the day.
I feel like I may have been on the cusp of being an acceptable age to watch this show when I was a kid...but, we were poor, so while all my friends were watching Hey Arnold or other nick shows, I watched PBS - Magic School Bus, Arthur, Wishbone. At least I leaned things! Like the handy PBJ tip! And I "read" literature at a young age with Wishbone. Maybe this is why I am so smart. ::preens::
It's all my son has been watching lately. It's better than the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon he was previously obsessed with (Jaleel White is the voice of Sonic and all I can hear is Steve Urkel when it's on)

My kid's favorite show is Octonauts, and she also enjoys Wild Kratts.
Related, I was horrified that my H had never heard of Reading Rainbow (if I'm old, he's ancient). Just hearing the theme song for that show lifts my heart.

Yes, I know what it is, but only because I 'discovered' it for my kids a couple years ago on Netflix. I was born in the late 70's.
I thought the apparently "old" version was THE version. I never knew anything about it until recently. We didn't have cable growing up, and weren't allowed to watch TV at all except for Saturday mornings. PBS morning kids shows during breaks from school if we were lucky.
And now I want to re-read the Babysitter Club books. I just thought Ms. Frizzle was a teacher at their school. Like, until 10 minutes ago, reading this thread. :\
