Mmm, I just returned some boots and glanced over the policy (boots were unworn and returned within a week because I just didn’t like the fit as much as my other Bean boots). They already exclude things bought at yard sales or people who “abuse” the policy. So I don’t know why they had to update it - at least, the reasoning makes little sense. It’s still a great return policy, but it’s hardly unique. I had Lo and Sons completely replace a laptop bag after a year and a half with my original order number after the crossbody strap ripped out.
I remember when the zipper on my LL Bean backpack broke when it was probably 3 years old. My mom insisted on getting us LL Bean bags because they last forever and she knew she would save money in the long run vs buying new bags every year. She called just to see if she could send it back for a new zipper, but they replaced the entire thing. She was shocked!
I do have LL Bean luggage and other items that I have had for YEARS though, so I’ll still purchase from them for the quality.

Because people weren't honoring the policy. Why is this so hard to understand? How is the counter person supposed to know where you bought the raggedy piece of whatever you're handing them? That part *entirely* worked on the honor system.
There's an LL Bean book bag at my oldest daughter's house that she has had for 21 years now. She still uses the thing from time to time. I initially purchased it when she was in 1st grade because I did not want to deal with buying new bags every year. She carried it for a long time until she asked for a new one due to design. After that she got a new one for college. They are all still in great shape but I WOUD NEVER TRY TO RETURN ONE AFTER ALL OF THIS TIME!!!!. I also own a pair of Bass duck boots from 1994 they don't get used frequently but if they dry rot I would toss them instead of asking for a new pair.
How do you wear a defective coat the whole winter and not have time to return it? There's no way people are just that busy.
You don’t even have to take any meaningful time out of your day to return it. After a quick phone call, they send you a new item, you put the defective one in the box, stick on the return shipping label they provide you, and mail it back. This is not hard or time consuming. They are fantastic.

I think these (zipper, crossbody strap, etc), would all count as a defect and be covered past the one year warranty.
Worn out slippers would not. lol. Some people are too much.
Returning slippers after years of wear? C'mon man! You realize it is people like you mrshandy and susiebw that made them change their policy.
I bought H a pair of slippers in 2014 that started coming off the bottom within 6 months but never returned them because he was like dude, I wear them daily. We glued it and he still wears those slippers daily.
Oh man, this makes me kind of sad. I bought some $60 LL Bean slippers a few years ago. I love them so much. But I bought them because I thought they would be my slippers for life. LOL. I guess I can still try to take them back for defects. They're still fine, but starting to wear a little bit inside.
I'm sorry, but I keep laughing at this. You spent $60 on slippers and thought they would be your slippers for life?
I bought an LL Bean backpack when I was in college in 1997. Currently, it is sitting next to me on the floor of my office. Because I'm still using it. The thing is fucking phenomenal.
However, the thought has never crossed my mind to return it on the eventual day something goes wrong with it. I'll pour one out for my backpack that lasted 20+ years and buy a new fucking backpack.
I think cesspool is a bit strong in this case, but it certainly shows how privileged we are that there isn't a second of, "huh, they're just wearing out regularly, but the store says I can bring them back whenever so I'm going to take advantage of that."
The next argument is going to be, "well they shouldn't have had that policy if they weren't going to honor it."
Hanna Andersson has the same policy and I went in there looking to replace a dress I ruined in the wash and when I mentioned that I ruined it, someone shopping in the store whispered “just bring it back, they’ll refund you.” Well yes, but it was my fault that it’s damaged! Hanna Andersson is also changing their return policy.
LOL I had no idea people would be so up in arms about a hypothetically returned pair of slippers. I never actually returned them. They're still going strong.
To bring this thread full circle, have we forgotten that the LL Bean owners are Trump supporters?

FFS, this is some really pathetic deflection. Just b/c the owners are Trump supporters doesn't make it okay to take advantage of the company. If you are really surprised at the reaction you got then you obviously haven't been paying attention.
I just can’t wrap my head around the concept of buying something from a retailer in perfectly good condition (or even slightly defective condition but you keep it, implying that you are ok with the defect) USING it for a long time, then returning it when you’re done with it. Where the fuck does this mindset come from? Is it “the corporation is so big and it won’t hurt them?” Is it “rules of common decency and the social contract don’t apply to me?”

Seriously, I have never returned anything to LL Bean that I hadn't bought within the last 30 days. So why exactly do I deserve this venom? Please explain. I didn't cause them to change anything.
But I've learned my lesson. I will never return anything outside the return period or even THINK about returning anything outside the return period for any company lest I face CEP's wrath.

Nope, nice try. One family member donated to trump. ONE. The rest of her family distanced themselves from her and her politics. She owns a different business that caught a ton of backlash after she was publicly thanked by Orange Foolius.
Also, none of this distracts people from seeing you as an asshole. HTH!

Thanks for reinforcing the fragile white woman stereotype.

we're not. we're up in arms about folks fucking things up for us, the people who aren't all wily and cagey when we buy shit or legitimately need to return it.

Whether it is 30 days or 3 years, I think the point is that if you use something, it its yours and shouldn't be returned. If your slippers have outlived their usefulness and you enjoyed wearing those slippers then throw out the old ones and buy a new pair...don't bring them back and expect a new pair for free. I don't get why that is difficult to grasp.

This examples really irks me as a regular HA shopper, lol. I mean, if people want to get "more" out of HA clothes that they already paid for, HA has one or two times a year when you can bring in old HA clothes (although I think they say gently used) and get discounts on new ones. I've done that, particularly for things that didn't quite wash as well as I'd like (certain appliques, some of their screen-print shirts).

Lady, you're getting shit because you said it was your plan to wear them and then take advantage of their return policy to get a new pair when they wear out instead of buying a new damn pair.
