Huh, this frequent shoe exchanger apparently doesn't feel any shame. And sounds pretty stupid making the argument.
L.L. Bean Has Ended Unlimited Returns, and I Am Fairy Certain It’s My Faulthttps://slate.com/business/2018/02/l-l-bean-has-ended-unlimited-returns-and-i-am-fairly-certain-its-my-fault.html
This guy also says the first time he was able to exchange his shoes for free and get some kind of promotional gift card was one of the best days of his life, and in the 7 years following he didn't spend a dime on close toed shoes. I feel like there's a line between not wanting to over consume and whatever the hell this guy was doing.... it's an unhealthy obsession with being miserly IMO if saving $40 was "one of the greatest days of my life".
I hate cards. I never get them for MH, and if I have to get them for someone else I’m not paying more than a dollar.
I’m the opposite. I also hate them, so if I get one, I’m going to get one of the really nice ones. Or one of the ones from Paper Source that has Obama on it and says “Baracking around the Christmas Tree” and costs $8.95 but has Obama on it.
Most embarrassingly: I liked AJL’s post & mbcdefg’s with the wishful hope of one day being able to see the price & immediately placing aforementioned Rip-Off back on the shelf. But I Don’t! Like you, I don’t buy too many* so invest in the card I want. If I see a $7.98 on the card I picked, I just pretend like I never saw it &/or assume it must be on sale because there’s no way... 😳 #embarrassingconfession
*My h would disagree & he frequently calls me a card addict. PEOPLE LIKE RECEIVING CARDS!! Especially in the current digital age! But I don’t buy too many In Store; I do invest somewhat heavily in Amazon cards & get some pretty good box sets where the cost comes to $2-ish per card.
CBS just did a story on how millennials are revitalizing the greeting card industry.
(We've reached the random anecdote/tangent portion of the thread, right?)
I love greeting cards and I am sure as hell not a millennial. It's fun to receive them in the mail. I may have also just purchased 4 boxes of Thank You Notes. Writing those is a dying manner.
My family gets so butt hurt when i don't send cards. You'd think they would learn not to care after 20 years of not sending any.
We're so far from ll bean now. Despite having family in Maine and flying into Portland and even going to the flag ship, i can't say I've ever bought anything from there (and i have a fair among rei clothing). I know people love their bean backpacks, but they were the height of dork where I grew up. Jansport was where it was at.
www.theonion.com/l-l-bean-ends-iconic-lifetime-return-policy-1822960144 In a message to patrons, L.L. Bean announced that it would end its long-standing policy of guaranteeing products for life, citing modern business demands and customers exploiting loopholes in the plan. What do you think?
“But finding a loophole in a well-intentioned policy and exploiting it into ruin is a cornerstone of the American dream!” TIMOTHY PERCH • WINDOWSILL BOTANIST
“Do they really expect me to buy a new backpack every 37 years?” CANDICE WILLIAMS • FISH CALMER
“That does it! I’m tired of being pushed around by Big Flannel.” PATRICK MENDELSSOHN • MICROFICHE ARCHIVIST

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this... I heard from someone that hallmark throws away all of the unsold cards for each holiday. In the trash.
I know Hallmark pulls all their greeting cards and seasonal dolls and disposes of them. I do not know if there is it is directly into the trash though. I have a few of the seasonal doll type decorations because the distributor asked if the employees of the grocery store I worked out wanted them before throwing them out.
It is not just seasonal either, there is also a limited time run on the other cards and they are also disposed of once the time frame has passed.

Lol! So true. LL Bean backpacks were for dorks and rich kids. Only the cool kids had Jansport. (They weren’t that cheap either so I have no idea where the snooty rich kid thing came into play).
I thought of this post when at Target tonight. I'm clearly not helping to revamp the greeting card injury, because no way was I paying $7 a piece for VDay cards for my kids, I went to Dollar Tree instead. I'm sure they'd rather the extra money go towards candy, which it did.
