Me! Sitting in my robe drinking coffee. I am trying not to think about work. I have a crazy week coming. Since i cant seem to get people out of my office to get things done, including my boss, I dont know if I am as prepared as I should be for the week ahead.
Only thing on the agenda is volleyball practice, of course on our day off. Dh is working. I think I will spend the cold afternoon making a big pot of spaghetti.

DH has off so he's with the kids. I'm at work.
I ran my half marathon yesterday so my legs hurt. My boss is back in the office today from having surgery though, so I want to be here when he comes back.
I am at the office, which is super nice and quiet. About to have a full day of meetings with all of my graduate students. But that's good, classes start tomorrow here. It's super cold though, today its 1 without windchill, we have negative 13 in the forecast though and a ton of snow.
I'm at work. We don't close for MLK day. I am OK with it though because I typically need a break from my family after the weekend. Yesterday was the pool which went well, and then DS wanted to walk to cub scouts. It's only about 3 blocks but in the snow it turned out to be quite the work out. I had to take a nap yesterday for an hour to recuperate from both activities.
Also, and I think you all know this but DH drives me crazy. This week was "I am staying home with kids. No I am not I am going to Brazil. Oh I need a Visa. Not going to Brazil. I'm disappointed I can't go to Brazil. Maybe I will go on Wed." Did you get your visa, no. "Why are the kids going to camp today?" Facepalm. (I'm not going to have no childcare and have to take off work at the last minute because you can't figure out your travel plans). Also he was disappointed they were signed up for camp when he was the one that signed them up with my prompting due to him telling me he would be in Brazil.
Me- I didn't wake the kids up because you let them stay up watching the game until 9:15. Him- "The kids stayed up, I didn't tell them to." Me- Are you or are you not the parent? "I am the parent but not the kids." OMG

I'm at work - we don't close for MLK Jr Day either. I have a presentation to give this afternoon.
It is bitterly cold here - negative temps. Some schools closed due to the temps, but I am so glad our district stayed open (due to DH and I both having to give presentations today and it would've made for a scramble to get care for the day). I would've definitely written a nasty-gram to the superintendent if he had cancelled. We don't have very many kids who actually walk to school, so most kids only have to walk the short distance between the bus or their parent's car and the front door of the school.
Weekend was pretty good. On Saturday we celebrated my dad's birthday, which was nice. Each of the kids got to play with a friend, and I got to have coffee with my bestie yesterday. We tried to catch some of the blood moon last night, but I didn't want to stay up half the night because of having to give a presentation today.
MIL is a hot mess about the upcoming MRI for her kidney this Thursday. She's expecting/planning for the worst, but has refused to have someone come with her (DH offered), if just for emotional support. Hopefully she'll receive results soon after the test so at least she knows if it's good or bad (and hopefully what the next steps would be if the news is bad). She's coming over on Saturday for lunch to celebrate DD's birthday (2 weeks early, because she decided to plan a trip to visit another granddaughter for that granddaughter's birthday (which is 2 days after DD's) and will miss the family birthday celebration with my parents), so we'll find out more then.
waverly, That would drive me bonkers. I would have signed them up for camp also. RE Brazilian visas, the form's english translation doesn't make any sense, so I ended up using an expediter. Even so, it took a few weeks. But the visa I got is good for 10 years.
I'm at work too. In all my years of banking, I have never worked at a financial institution that closed for MLK Day. Not much on my plate for today, so I am hoping to get a bunch of stuff checked off my list!
My day has been crappy and it's not even lunch time yet. We stayed indoors all weekend due to the storm. This morning, I woke up to news reports of all of the bridges into town being closed due to runaway barges. So I immediately decided to work at home all day instead of going in after my dentist appointment. I went to my dentist appointment and I need a root canal and crown for my hurting tooth. I'm on antibiotics and vicodin (if needed) until my appointment next Tuesday morning, which was the earliest that I could get in.
Now I am back home trying not to spiral on getting a root canal while getting some work done. Oh, and the kids are off school today, so I keep getting distracted by random questions and yelling from the next room.

polecat8, I'm sorry, that sucks. I have severe dental fear and have always made myself sick with worry before things like root canals. But they actually haven't been that bad. I find cleanings worse than a root canal.

I'm kind of bummed. DS' school withheld re-enrollment invitations from 2 students we know. Both of whom have attention and learning disabilities and are also big reasons we came to the school bc the families talked about how the school was accommodating them so well. For one family it looks like they may work with the school on making sure the teacher is really implementing accommodations. The other family is pissed and is on their way out the door. Probably they will be better off b/c they'll be able to afford more private tutoring if they aren't paying for private school...but it sucks.
Working...hoping for a quiet day so I can get a bunch of stuff accomplished. Going to Costco after work to pick up my prescription and groceries before picking DD up from practice.
Lion King was amazing. I really wish I would have splurged for floor seats as the actors used the aisles for parts of the show and that as hard to see from the Mezzanine. Zazu was my favorite. DD liked the kids playing Simba and Nala. Costumes were amazing along with the dancing/choreography. DD was on the edge of her seat the whole night and only got spooked during the elephant graveyard scene but I think it was the smoke and flashes that got her more than anything else. Both DD and I would go see it again. DH seemed to enjoy it but not like we did. We got so lucky with parking and got a spot 3 spaces from the skybridge so getting out afterwards was really easy and we were all in bed by 11:30.
Gymnastic meet on Saturday was okay. OSU forgot their glue and wiggle juice so not the show we are normally used to but it was also their first home meet of the season. After the meet we went by my sisters new house and fixed her sink. She was at work so didn't get to learn anything and it was so easy and the trap was just filled with a lot of gunk. I've been major eye rolling her the last couple weeks as she is having house issues and just expects dad to drive up to fix it.
Has anyone done an elimination diet? TMI, but I have a lot of bloating and it gets so bad that it even goes into my back and causes back pain. So I was hoping to find what foods are triggering it.
I know chocolate sometimes triggers my acid reflux which is sad. But I can counteract that with medicine. But anti bloating and gas medicine is really not that helpful and probiotics don't do that much on a regular basis nor do digestive aids.
I’m on a plane. I got upgraded so yay! We are possibly going to be delayed because catering forgot the liquor drawer for first class and the coffee carafes in coach.
The TSA agents this morning were really funny and sweet. The guy in precheck made an announcement about checking your ticket to see if it said precheck then added “if you get up here and don’t have a smile, I’m sending you back to the end of the line!” All I could think was “This kind, professional man isn’t getting a paycheck and I’m quite certain he isn’t tapping his trust fund to make ends meet. Fuck our government. I hate Trump and his effing wall.”
186momx,how did she do staying in her seat and up late? We are going next month and taking our 4 and 6 year olds. I'm a little worried about DD2.
We were invited to a house party for DD1's best friend's family. We've been reaching out to each other more because it was the friend's birthday and we started a carpool. They are part of a group at school that always gets together and posts friend pictures on Facebook. I usually look at them and wonder what that feels like - to have this big group of adult friends who also have kids that all go to school together. Also, wondering if you have to be part of the group in order for the kids to be friends but it feels so HS and I don't have the time or energy to put in. DD1 doesn't really play with the other kids in this group but her friend is her bestie. The evening was nice but also awkward because everyone else knew each other. I much prefer small gatherings with one on one time!
We had a busy weekend. Had play date with DD's friend from her old daycare on Saturday. Both of the girls were so excited about the play date, but neither really played with each other. I guess that's 3.5 year olds for you. My Dad has been having dizzying spells when he stands up, and it got a lot worst on Saturday, so I took him to a walk-in, and the walk-in doctor ordered a bunch of blood work and a ECG, so we'll see how that goes. It made me rather depressed, as it's hitting me that he is getting older and his health will probably just get worst as the years go by.
Then yesterday DS had his hockey game - they played against a really good team and I think the score was something like 20 to 2. But DS and his teammates all had fun and seemed pretty upbeat about it. DS once again asked if I could sign him up for extra skills camps/training. It's so expensive! I will do it because he really wants to, but in reality, I don't see him being a good hockey player in any event, so the money seems a bit "wasted".

waverly, I haven't done one, but you could start one by one with the main food categories that tend to cause reactions (e.g., dairy, eggs, wheat/gluten, nuts, acidic fruits) and go from there. Does anyone in your family have similar issues and/or a food sensitivity/allergy that they are aware of?
mellym , I know what you mean. Our good friends like to collect friends and they like big groups. It's NMS, but it is kind of nice to have them coordinate stuff I guess. Like there are people they are friends with that I just straight up don't like. There are also people that are part of their group that I mostly like and are now Girl Scout leaders etc. It is a bit strange to me still because there is an element of social engineering I guess, but they mostly try to be inclusive just a bit oblivious. I know I mentioned it here before, where we were invited to be on teams (I actually don't think they could because it is just the kids of the coaches anyway) or that they split our cub scouts into 2 dens, and they obviously ran right out and was like we have to be together, and forgot about us.
But we keep getting asked to do other activities like dance (we passed because the time is too early in the day) or private coaching which is not our thing because they are still so little and wouldn't be playing that sport for another year anyway, but we are joining them for a sport class, so we shall see how that goes.
I have been wondering to see if the whole group thing implodes. I think they had some strain this year because one signed up for a sport, but the rest of them chose not to. And some tension because one couple wants everyone else to do their thing. But it seems they are starting to do some things together and some apart, so they may survive a few more years. It's interesting though because volunteer coaches are probably not going to be in charge for the older ages. So my plan is definitely not to try to hard, but hang on the edges so we hopefully don't get burned if the core group blows up but reap the benefits from a social group and carpooling. I'll let you know how it works out. We were definitely hesitant, but other playdates for DS didn't work out so I figure this is going to be his group. For DD, it might be more her pre-school friends and girl scouts.
It's also a bit strange because I haven't had a "group" since high school, and I think I was the center. Not on purpose but because I knew people separately and brought them together, so it's IDK just strange to me in general. The high school group (just 4) was awesome though with very little drama when I reflect back.

My mom has mentioned that she is now lactose intolerant, but I don't know how she figured it out.
mellym, She did really well. The group in front of us even rearranged seats so the kid was sitting in front of DD so she could see instead of the mom which I thought was so nice and I didn't even have to ask. I would let your kids wander as long as possible before the show starts (this was the only time DD was antsy and kept asking when it would start). The first part is 1 hour and 15 minutes with about a 20 minute intermission which was long enough to go pee and the 2nd half was about the same time period. The show kept her so interested it was like her watching Magic School Bus.
waverly, I cut out gluten/wheat over the summer. I actually just cut carbs which was easier to explain to my family and for me to manage. Elimination diets are a lot harder than I thought it would be and you need to cut it for at least 14 days and then it is a very slow add back. I would probably get some help from a nutritionist. This didn't cut my gas/bloating/irritable bowl movements which is why I tried it as I was noticing after eating pasta I was miserable. I still avoid pasta but have added carbs back since in small moderation.

traveltheworld, I agree. I kind of, maybe even over stepped as a result? Not intending to exactly but I we are about to enroll DD there also and this made me really concerned so I sent an email to the admissions person asking a very pointed email about how they treat kids with learning disabilities. My email resulted in me having a sit down with the HOS on Friday where they were clearly trying to do damage control, and then after my meeting the school reached out to both families. I'm not trying to get involved in these other kid's enrollment exactly, but my son has a LD and my daughter might also. My son is doing well b/c we figured out early on that he needed help and he's getting an abnormal amount of help. Kids need to have space and time for parents and the school to figure out what interventions and accommodations are necessary, and then you have to have more time for those things to work. There's different things going on in the two situations, but like I told the HOS, if we're ever in the same place as those families (and it could happen) I want to know and understand how I'm going to be treated. And we don't go to some highly selective private school. So yeah. It was shitty of them.
waverly , For lactose intolerance you can actually get your lactase enzyme measured with blood work. Both DH and the kids are lactose intolerant, but not allergic to milk (at least DD because she was tested). Otherwise I am no help on this.
waverly - DD is about to start testing for food intolerances. The first is a lactose breath test. She has to restrict her diet 24 hours before, then fast 8 hours before. They measure her hydrogen output in her breath at the start, then make her drink something awful and measure it a few more times over the course of 3 hours. If there is an intolerance, gut bacteria will produce higher levels of hydrogen I think??? I’m not sure. But it’s all breath. Then I’m going to push for a gluten test if available.
If she’s intolerant to both, she will die. All she eats is bread, cheese, pasta, and yogurt.
waverly, yes! I'm trying to stay on the fringes as well because I don't know how you can even keep up with that many friends. They had 28 kids at the party plus all the adults. This seems pretty normal from the Facebook posts. I suppose it gets to the point where you can't exclude any families (drama) and you keep adding more as you get to know people from the kids' activities. I do wonder if they all like each other or just go along because they want to be with the "in" group.
mellym, I can tell you I definitely don't like them all ha ha.
It's not about being with the in group because I think there are lots of groups in our town and not sure which ones are in. I think my friends might know, but I don't.
It's more that these are the people inviting us to do stuff and I do like some of them, so I would rather do stuff with them then the people that I ask and turn me down or are too flaky. But I also would like some friends outside of the group and have some independence rather than having my schedule dictated to me.
I’m off today but daycare is open so you know what that means. My toddler went in. My big kids came to the gym w me, but I just stretched and foam rolled, floated in the pool, used the steamroom and sauna. Then ate a Big Mac and fries and brought lunch to my parents. I ran my trail 50k this weekend so I’m still allowing myself whatever.
I’m finished folding laundry and am now watching American Housewife.

Back to the old grind tomorrow.
Wow! I signed up for a trail run that has a 50K but I'm just doing 10 miles. Then the following weekend I'm going to do another one that has a half marathon, 30 mile and 50 mile option....I'm doing the half marathon.
mae0111, waverly, Pediatric allergist. DD actually had the gluten test too, because celiac's runs in our families. The blood test doesn't entirely rule it out. If she was having problems we would have had her scoped as well. Although the celiac's was just through our family practice because we didn't have an allergist yet.
