So I thought I'd share with you all that my days as a Californian are numbered. In October, my H and I and our pups are going to move back to D.C., where we met and lived for many years before moving to California in 2008.
The Bay Area has been amazing, but it isn't making sense for us any more. Both of us will have better job opportunities there, houses are a lot cheaper, public transit is better, and my entire family and H's 85 year old father are all on the east coast. It's a good time for us to take the plunge, as both of us are in jobs that we can continue to do from D.C., so we figured we should go now on our own terms instead of waiting for the day our landlord pulls the rug out from us and sells the place, which is what has happened to more friends and neighbors here than I can count.
I am giving up voting representation in Congress and the chance to participate in a critical presidential primary next year, so expect me to get even more mouthy about my views because I will be depending on all of you.
For various reasons, we are holding off on telling certain people, so if you know me on Facebook, do not repeat this info on social media.

WOW! Sounds like it will be a good move but I'm sure you'll miss CA. Selfishly, I wasn't sure about the next time I'd be out in the Bay Area to have dinner anyway lol, so yay for coming back to the East Coast!

Move to VA and help it stay blue?
It’s funny, I never spent much time in VA when I lived there before and don’t know it. DC feels like home, and parts of MD are under consideration because we have friends there, but Virginia is this huge unfamiliar area.
I’m also annoyed by the Amazon shit.
But I have thought about how much fun it would be to live in a purple state.

Will you be in DC by August? I have a conference and am specifically coming in early so I can have a GTG with locals. Yes, because this is all about me. 😜

Or MD? My husband grew up in PG County. Not a bad commute if you're not averse to public transportation/trains. Or you can become a MoCo NIMBY. My daughter and son-in-law were in Norfolk (military) and she thought VA was a great place for them. So another vote for try it out at least until 2020. But definitely keep up the mouthiness no matter where you land. Your words and POV are invaluable here and will be in DC as well. Best of luck.

So happy for you. I loved living in Alexandria for four years and would have totally loved to move into DC proper if I could have (tied to a school at the time). Good luck!

There are very, very few places you could move to DC from and make this statement about

Congratulations! This is exciting stuff.
Hold up...why is this not on my calendar yet?
Because I can only plan so much. Hang on, let me grab the dates.
But as for the major topic at hand, Yay!! As a DC adjacent marylander this is great news! Not that I'm great at GTGs, but now that I work metro adjacent DC is so much easier.
As you may know, I go to DC roughly twice a year, sometimes more, so maybe I’ll get a chance to meet up! I’ve been bad about that in the past when we go because our trips are usually last minute or meant to spend time with family but I’ll try to do better!

Elections in VA are amazing. But I'm biased. It still blows my mind that in college I lamented that I would have to move from my home state to get good blue representation BUT NOPE! Come help us flip the VA leg this fall
Welcome back! Hope we get to meet up at some point.

We are driving cross country the first week of October. I’m sorry I will miss this!!!! Hopefully there will be many more in the future!
We did that for similar reasons, except Los Angeles to Philly, so close enough. I moved to LA in 2003 and moved back east in 2013. BTW, Philly is great for a weekend trip from DC! Just saying. Anyway, I miss CA (especially the political climate because living in a purple state is WAY less fun than I thought it would be), but being closer to family on the east coast and being able to, like, purchase a house was worth it. Good luck!

Oooh, a DC-adjacent Marylander? Maybe you can give ESF some places that are commutable but still votable.
