I am super late to this entire thread and didn't see the OP.

Just wanted to say that I recently lived for a year on a 2 acre property and the owners (we were renting) had fenced much of the yard in themselves just with wire fencing and metal stakes. Relatively cheap and easy to install. As a fence it wasn't attractive but it also just blended into the background. So at a minimum perhaps you could do that, it wouldn't take more than a day to install and wouldn't cost much.

That lady is full of shit (ha!) and I bet she saw you out there and was scrambling to cover for herself. But that just shows that she knows what she was doing is wrong.

Also, I agree with PPs, I would lead her to believe that I was home every day now. She should be behaving as though you are always home.

I agree with cleo. Her story is all a lie. She took that dog into your backyard for the purpose of letting it poop.

I understand why you don't want to go at her with guns blazing. She still is your neighbor that you want ot have a somewhat cordial relationship with.

BUT I wouldn't give her too much leeway on her story. If she thought her dog had pooped in your yard and THEN came over to look for it - bringing her dog again doesn't make any sense, much less letting it off the leash (My dog has never sniffed out her own poop!! OTHER dogs poop? Yes. But never her own!!). She's full of shit and trying to cover for herself.

Let her feel uncomfortable!

I feel like she knows you're upset and I would guess it will stop. I would let it go for fear that she might stop giving you kids clothes hand-me-downs.
