Going off the IL theme, when people call their ILs Mr./Mrs. Last name. Why do you need to be so formal with family?? But actually just calling anyone Mr/Mrs seems weird to me, we're all adults.
My family calls my grandfathers SO Ms. Susie and her family calls my grandfather Mr. Bill. There are other family friends I call Ms or Mr, I guess old habits die hard!
I was trying to think of anyone I do this with, and the ILs do this with grandpa IL's girlfriend. So I guess I find it less weird when there's a large generational gap?
On the phone call front: my mother will often call me then say "someone wants to talk to you" and it's my 2nd grade teacher or some lady she took a class with 40 years ago and I am left to have an awkward conversation with a stranger and it's SO ANNOYING, MOM.
This is close to my worst nightmare. I would stop answering her calls 😅
This is very sweet of you, and at the same time my Pac-10 alumni self (it wasn't the Pac-12 then!) is laughing at the idea of college players not getting paid. I mean, sure, *technically* the Booster Club wasn't supposed to buy the national standout that new BMW our freshman year, and *technically* a car isn't a paycheck, but...yeah.
I assume you weren't talking about D1, and therefore this isn't the point at all, but it's crazy how much money is involved in what are supposedly non-professional sports at the college level.
I don't even know what PAC-10 is, lol. I'm only really familiar with public universities and I'm positive the players aren't getting paid (other than in scholarships, travel, meals, etc). They are treated well but not making millions like pro athletes.
The Pac-10 was the conference of D1 schools like UCLA, USC, Stanford, Cal, Oregon, OSU, Washington, WSU, Arizona, ASU - they added two more, so it's now 12
I went to one of the public universities in that list, and like I said, there is no paycheck, but the absolute top football players do get gifts that are beyond the usual athlete perks and might as well be payment even if not millions. Wealthy donors find ways to bend the NCAA rules.
I am not going to have a whole big long personal conversation on the phone in front of strangers. But while at DD’s dance class (in the waiting room) I will call to check on DS. It’s a 30 second phone conversation and doesn’t make sense to gather all our stuff up to go outside in the cold to come back and try to find a seat again.

I still call my mom’s friend Mrs Last Name because I called her that as a kid and I don’t really see her often now to make that transition. My husband finds it cute and a bit silly but that’s how I think of her.
A lot of teenagers/ younger adults I know call me/refer to me Miss First Name so I don’t find it too weird. I think it’s regional/cultural.
I don’t call my ILs Mr or Mrs but I would! They are pretty old and calling them by their first name always seems slightly off to me. They are not my peers or friends.
I think my family was pretty old fashioned/traditional when it came to talking to adults. No sir or ma’am but people’s parents were always Mr or Mrs or Ms by default.
That bugs me. It's such a stupid rhyme, and I'm sure I'm the only one it bothers, but to the thread's intent there ya go: that boy band rhyme in that stupid song.
See also the Billy Joel song Piano Man:
"And he's talking with Davy Who's still in the Navy"
Nope to that rhyme, too, plus it bugs me the way Billy Joel sings the word Navy.
(YES, these are things that bother me BUT SHOULDN'T.)
Ha! (How's that for course-correcting the thread, mofongo ?)
Does Davy and Navy not rhyme?
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a Billy Joel song so I’m not sure how he says it.
I am not sure this is possible. You don't know the song Piano Man?
Even if you didn't know it was Billy Joel, I guarantee you've heard his songs. They still get a decent amount of radio play and have been a huge part of American culture for decades!
We didn't start the fire? Uptown Girl? Only the Good Die Young? I love you just the way you are?
All that said, I have no idea what renna is talking about with Navy. It sounds normal to me!

Oh duh. Yes I've heard of that. The team I support is Big 10 so we've played some of those teams in bowl games.
As far as I know big 10 athletes don't get those kinds of perks, but I won't claim to know everything about them I guess. I do think the midwest has a very different culture around money than the coasts and it could have even varied by school (perhaps at Northwestern things are different, for example). I feel like I would have heard something if the football players were rolling around my old town in a free BMW but who knows. I guess I've learned something new in this conversation!
LOL I’m elderly but never really into pop music?
Lol you are hardly "elderly"!
He became famous in the late 60's/early 70's I think but was still really popular through the 90's. I'd probably argue he is still popular. There were people of all ages at the concert I attended last summer (which sold out!).

I know Uptown Girl! I didn’t know who that was! I’m sure I would recognize more if I heard them because I know he was/is hugely popular. I must have heard them in movies or at the grocery store.
It’s a little weird I guess because I’m very good at trivia but I was never really into easy listening/pop music like that and neither was anyone I knew. Ask me about Motown! Or hip hop! Or britpop! Bollywood soundtracks! Disco! Hardcore bands of the mid-Atlantic! Punk! Anything but white male singers of the 1970s lol
I know all about his marriages though. Does that count?

Yes, that is what surprised me, I feel like you know a lot more about general pop culture stuff than me!
I think knowing about his personal life helps make up for it a little bit, haha.
I basically only listen to music my parents like and stuff from the 90's (and a select few current artists) so he's definitely my jam.
ETA: A attended the concert with me and he recognized several of his songs but didn't know ahead of time they were Billy Joel, either. I give him more of a pass because he didn't grow up in the US though

I think since my parents didn’t like him, I wasn’t really exposed to him? I can’t see my childhood self seeking him out and by middle/HS I definitely wasn’t listening to anything like that .

I think I’d get it correct if it was multiple choice in a quiz (lol) but I get his songs confused with other popular songs of the era like Brown-eyed Girl, Sweet Caroline, Young Girl etc that white people sing along to at weddings.

Hate to break it to you... but the Big 10 is just as involved.

College sports are horrific in their exploitation of these kids.
LOL. All big money college sports are corrupt AF. The idea that the Big 10 is so much better than the PAC 10 is asinine. The Big 10 is home to Penn State, which we all know has never ever done anything wrong.
i was really annoyed to find that Athleta has them in their sports bras. WHY??? Something that is already tight to get on and then you add in something that moves around and serves no purpose. Make the bra thick enough to mask nipples as much as possible and call it a day!
Like are there actually people who permanently take them out? My boobs aren’t even that big but I can’t take them out. My nipples would look ridiculous! Just sew that shit in there!
I permanently take them out. Only because I hate dealing with them shifting so much. I would so much rather have them sewn in. Bathing suits are the worst.

I never said anything to that effect or that the Big 10 was better.
To my knowledge they are not handing out luxury cars to football players, but I said upthread i could be wrong. I frankly do not care if other schools do. I think athletes bringing in a ton of money should be compensated, to be honest. This whole line of discussion stemmed from my irritaion that people leave athletic events early and dont stick around to support the people playing. If we are arguing that i have no cause for irritaion because they are highly compensated, i just wanted to point out that thats not always true.

It wouldn't be to your knowledge though unless you were friends with a star football player. It wasn't public knowledge (I knew this particular guy, and he told me), and the car didn't come from the university itself, it came unofficially from fans with tons of money who wanted to make sure their team was good. If you've seen The Blind Side, think about the parade of schools trying to sweeten the signing deal. Trust that "and you can live in the best dorm!" is not the best offer they're handing out - when we're talking about a business worth hundreds of millions of dollars, I think it's safe to assume the top HS recruits are going to get offers of major off-the-books swag to encourage them to go to one school over the other.
Which I recognize is not your initial point, haha.
Paying pre-professional athletes isn't something that bothers me. It's tying those pre-professional sports teams to colleges that causes such bullshit. Have minor leagues for all sports and don't make sports a factor in college admissions *at all.* Then go ahead and pay them for their time on those teams rather than pretending it has anything to do with education.
Give the kid a salary, not just a car, and stop pretending the purpose of university is to field a football team.

For some reason lately when people add the last word to an acronym it makes me crazy. Let's say "ATM machine". We have acro's here that staff will say ABC credential, just leave the redundant word out.

My favorite Athleta sports bra had permanent soft cups, and it was discontinued. I think they make the pads removable so the bra can accommodate a mastectomy prosthesis? I can get behind that. But I hate those damn removable cups with the fire of a thousand suns.

I pretty much only wear their hyper focused bras and the first thing I do is take the pads out!
