Or - hear me out - since the upstairs is so huge, they could have put the kitchen/dining area/family area up there (like what they have downstairs now, but bigger, so everything would fit better and the hang out space would be more like a family room area) and then the current kitchen could have been office/downstairs hang out space.

She is so defensive in that video tour that it was uncomfortable to watch at certain points.
On the one hand, I get that this is their job and how they make money. But on the other, they just seem sooo over having to explain or justify their private choices about how they live to other people. I totally get it, I would be annoyed by all the people asking about floor plans and or the width of a hallway too. “Since I know you’re going to ask about this...”. And it’s true, her DMs are full of weirdly specific and detailed questions about the house.
They have a weird dynamic with a certain sub section of super fans. I don’t know how they put up with the constant intrusion of unsolicited opinions.

I can see the posts now, "But why do they have a kitchen upstairs? It's so far to put away groceries..." LOL!

I like that she is using Instagram to promote Black-owned businesses. I got a bunch of cool stuff from places I otherwise would never have heard from - and she pissed off a not insignificant number of her followers doing it.

lol right? And the cost of having to tear out and re-run plumbing, potentially gas, etc. No, thank you.

Seriously! Keeping the kitchen downstairs makes sense for a ton of reasons.
And I love how half of the posts here are bagging her for being defensive and over-justifying their choices, and the other half are bagging her for making the wrong choice and how much they’re going to hate their house.
Honestly, it’s kind of a weird house but they live mortgage free at the beach so they’re still living the dream. I’d make that house work too.
I honestly think they will end up selling it in a few years (probably at a nice profit because they lead charmed lives, lol) and buying something with a better floor plan/maybe a little more space in the same area. They jumped on this house because it was in their price range and desired area. But something better might come along.
Their business model requires them to move or at least buy a new place to fix up every few years anyway.
She doesn't sound that defensive to me in that video tour. I dont normally watch them, but you all made me curious. Maybe I'm just used to a different conversational style, but sounded to me like she was responding to questions (like, I presume, 100s of the same ones because people are oddly obsessed with them). Someone at work recently told me that I have a "strong" personality and they like complaining to me about other stuff because I let them rant and dont get mad or ruffled about it. So, there's that.

Hey guys! BIG news! We TOTALLY didn’t see this coming, we planned on dying in this house (ask John, I already made my own tombstone in the backyard that says $herdog!) But the other day we were getting ice cream and just happened to overhear an older couple talking about selling their house. It happens to be just down the street from our current house (literally! We walk past it on our daily walks to the beach and I’ve always told John how much I love their front porch!), but with an AMAZING floor plan and it DEFINITELY needs some love. We went to see it and just KNEW it needed us. Was it crazy to consider moving again so soon?! Then we got a call from a friend that they were looking to move to this area and did we know of any small, sweet, updated homes for sale? Do we?! Haha. So they’re buying our house, we’ll be moving right down the street (the kids have packed up their wagons with their stuff already to move down there LOL) and we can’t wait to update you on our new forever home!
The blog post today showed how they arranged the upstairs and I like it! Although I would want more seating by the TV instead of just a couch.
They really only had that couch in their other living room. They had the 2 chairs that are in the kitchen, but after they got rid of the sectional they kept saying the kids found the chairs so comfortable.
I dunno, my kid can take up the long side of our sectional without any trouble. I can't imagine putting her just in a chair.

This is so spot on that I almost thought it was real. I can even hear Sherry's voice.

What in the world? The loveseat upstairs is the only piece of comfortable furniture in that whole house besides the bed. Everything they do lately I feel like abort mission folks. The tea lights in the fireplace they just had to have in their bedroom, that tiny uncomfortable sitting area in the kitchen, yikes. I was so excited to follow along but this is a snoozefest of poor taste.

It’s been interesting to see it come along.
But I feel bad that the kids have to have basically all-white rooms, or maybe better said to be rooms that are to their taste AND Sherry’s. My kid’s room is a hodge-podge of cute stuff and stuff like a cardboard box “mermaid doll house” that would never fly on Insta.
What? They did a super fun colorful mural on one wall of their daughter’s room. And the kids seem to have plenty of books, stuffed animals, and other stuff. I don’t really let my kids keep random crap either unless it can be tucked away in a play room basket. It’s not about Instagram for me, it’s about clutter.
I just checked their blog yesterday for the first time in months. I absolutely hate most of what they’ve done. Ivory curtains on a white wall? Storing their clothes in their nightstands? They have no storage and are apparently very tiny people, so their designs definitely won’t work for about 98% of families. Seriously, there’s no garage or basement and they are a family of 4 in that tiny house. And I say that as someone who lives in a 1400 square foot house! With a garage and a basement. (Their layout is beneficial in that there’s no wasted hallway space, though.)

I think they're usually very clear that all of the decisions they make work for THEIR family. They're just here for entertainment, I don't think they're trying to convince people to do what they do.

Of course not, I'm just perplexed as to why they are so popular because of that.

There are a million blogs out there with people talking about their normal mainstream lives and home renovations. I think YHL being different is a big part of what makes them interesting.
ETA: And also they were one of the first home bogs to take off and spurred a slew of copycats. Many people have been following them for a decade or more so they probably feel like they know them.
I mean Sherry prides herself on having only 1 bra.
Wait, what?
Yes, it was a big sense of pride for her I guess.
Whenever I’m asked about my clothes, I joke that I wear basically the same thing every day. But it turns out that even after years of saying that (and sharing that I had just one bra for many years on the blog), a whole bunch of people freaked out when they saw the hanging bar in my closet on Instagram recently.
