I have a question. Them upping the charges on the cop that killed George Floyd, doesn't that make it more difficult to prove and a higher chance of him getting off? Also the toxicology report how does that play into it? Is 3rd degree easier to prove than 2nd?
Not exactly. He's still charged with 3rd degree. 2nd degree requires intent so it definitely be harder to prove, bit, for example, a jury could acquit on 2nd degree and convict on 3rd degree. It's in addition to, not in place of.
Tonight Kwame Alexander, Jacqueline Woodson, Jason Reynolds, and many other Black and POC YA and children's book authors are holding a rally for Black lives on Facebook Live via the Brown Bookshelf. They're going to be aiming their conversation at kids from 7:00-7:45 ET, and at parents and other adults from 7:45-8:30.
Legal Aid Society lawyers said they’d monitor the situation and would appeal “if necessary.” “We are also disheartened, however, because the overwhelming number of people held illegally are those accused of charges that should have resulted in their automatic release,” the society said in a statement. "Motivations aside, the NYPD is fully responsible for the hundreds of New Yorkers who are currently languishing in cages, deprived of their due process rights and at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19.”
Not defending at all, but for the past month or so, possibly more, Netflix has had a list of the top 10 movies watched today. They also have a trending sections that is the most watched today and over the last month or Something.
I've seen The Help on at least 2 lists circulating of "things to share with your white children to educate them about racism." I've responded where I've seen it, but there are so many such lists circulating now I'm sure it's on more. Anyway, that may be why it is trending.
I have't seen it on any of the lists that I have seen to share, but I did just google it (share movies racism children and movies for families about racism or race) and did not find that anything on the first page of google suggests this movie. So that is encouraging that it's not that widespread!
I cannot take credit for my comment - it comes as an extension from Trevor Noah, but I agree that we need to discuss this. The police are still civilians. They are not our military and they should not be treated as a federal or entity above the community. They are civilians we, the community, task with helping enforce our laws and norms. They aren't the final judges, they aren't the ones who make the laws or codes. They need to be put in check as our civil servants, who serve us. If they aren't serving the laws and codes that are made by elected officials or if they are taking judgement and violence into their hands to try to curb protests and changing norms/community codes they need to be checked. I agree with Bouie's take.

This is so wrong - especially with the additional health issue of COVID-19. They should know the risk of keeping people like this is going to result in many lawsuits, right?

They don't caaaaare. They're trying to scare people out of protesting.

As opposed to the police brutality suits? Its not like the baseline is acting in good faith.

NYPD is so corrupt. They believe they are above the law, so they don’t care about any of this.

I'm livid at this B.S. from Cuomo:
"If somebody's standing there and they just walked up and hit somebody with a baton, that's wrong. But I don't believe that's what happened,” he said. “Police bludgeon peaceful protesters with batons for no reason? That’s not a fact. They don’t do that. Anyone who did do that would be obviously reprehensible if not criminal.”

And it's what has clearly happened to hundreds if not thousands of other protesters just in the last week, all of it caught on video. These denials are so infuriating in part because they're so Orwellian--deny the evidence right before your eyes no matter how clear and obvious it is.

Buffalo officers quit special team after 2 officers suspended for allegedly shoving 75-year-old to ground. "Fifty-seven resigned in disgust because of the treatment of two of their members, who were simply executing orders"
...but tell me again how it's just "a few bad apples"

"I was only following orders" has not historically been an excuse that's held up in court.

Right. I watched it with my own eyes. Then I watched those zombie robots march right on past him like the fucking peacekeepers in the Hunger Games.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I’ve watched CNN and other live feeds all weekend and it happened over and over. I was watching LA and the cops just start whacking people who are literally standing still. This girl gets hit in the stomach and doubles over crying. Do they care? Of course not, just kept on pushing. It’s disgusting.
The Buffalo cops quit the SWAT team, not the force, but they only did it because the union won’t pay their legal bills if they are sued. Also, like all police unions, they are TRASH. And the mayor said as much on Rachel Maddow last night.
