Cue the people in my newsfeed "I mean this is awful, but why are they looting? Why are they rioting?" Notice they are NOT asking why racist cops keeps killing black people. This is reminding me of the Cincinnati riots. Here it is 2020 and not a damn thing has changed, hell it feels like things have only gotten worse.
I think it feels to white people that it has gotten worse because these incidents are now more often making the news due to cell phone videos and the advocacy of Black Lives Matter and other people/groups.
I don't know, I do think some horrendous people have been emboldened due to the elevation of a white supremacist to the presidency and also due to radicalization online, but it's impossible to know how much things like this happened before without most people being aware of it.

I don’t know if anyone else has struggled a bit (not even personally, but when others have questions/ accusations) with the Asian American officer’s presence (& ultimate silence). Jay (who I have followed on Tw & really respect) wrote an enlightening article/ newsletter & I wanted to share so others can learn. Did anyone hear the part in the video where the woman said she was a Minneapolis firefighter and begging them to get off of him?
She was begging them to check his pulse. I believe she was the one that triggered the mace being pulled because she stepped forward to try to check him. She also seemed to be yelling at the EMT's that showed up at the end and just tossed him on a gurney.
I don't know, this feels different than we have had in MN before. The outcry and support from local business standing with the black community is amazing. The unity with white allies is larger and more vocal than before. The University of MN is limiting their relationship with the MPD for events.
The protests and looting have now began in St Paul.
Metro Transit is stopping Service in many areas and downtown mpls business are preparing for riots.
Have you read why they were arresting him? He was trying to pay with a suspected fake $20. Which could happen to anyone. I can't tell you how many times I've been given Canadian coins instead of USA mint coins. Should I call the cops on those stores?
Yep. The man was not violent and not doing anything to cause "fear" in the police officers. They have been emboldened by the lack of consequences others have received. They don't even feel the need to come up with an excuse to murder a black person.
I liked this, not because I liked what happened, but you put so succinctly into words what I have been feeling. There are no consequences what so ever for our LEO or those "in charge" for using, implementing and benefiting from systematic racism.
And the fact that half of this country refuses to see that there is such a thing as systematic racism? It is just too much.
Did anyone hear the part in the video where the woman said she was a Minneapolis firefighter and begging them to get off of him? The bystanders trying to intervene at one point and the cop taking out mace? Those poor people trying to ration with the assholes because they knew they would have the same fate if they tried to do anything other than use words.
Our nanny is a black man. My brother, father, and half the males in my family are brown men. This world is not a safe place for them. And not enough people care.
3 videos in the last 2 weeks. All the other incidents not caught on tape that happen daily. The racism and murder of innocent people will never stop.
CNN interviewed one of the witnesses last night, it was absolutely heartbreaking to hear him speak about it.

I work for Target corp in mpls. Another store is being overrun by looters. We just had a meeting on what our emergency evacuation plan is if things turn here.

Yes! It’s not just the disproportionate (lethal) force that law officers use in their encounters with the black community. It’s that the situation is escalated at every turn — EVERY TURN — from the moment someone decides whether to call police, to whether police decide to make an arrest for the apparent transgression, to how they take “suspects” into custody ... continuing with how black people move through the justice system. The entire process is rigged.
I know everyone on this board knows this. But it seems like so many white people are willing to turn their heads because they think “well, he shouldn’t have broken the law in the first place.”
We don’t even know if the $20 bill was fake or not, but where was the sympathy for Floyd who lost his restaurant security job because of the pandemic while the white hairstylist in Dallas who broke the law is made a hero?

To the bolded, the one person I know who has been posting FB articles about riots and not about the racist murderer has also been posting articles for the past month about how the Democrats are destroying America with shelter in place rules (by not letting people work and ruining the economy and small business). I'm sure she'll blame the Dems for George Floyd's death as well.

I just heard that Target and HyVee are closing stores over on the East Side of town (Roseville, Oakdale, North St. Paul) because one of the officers lives in Oakdale and protesters have found his house. Potentially also the AG lives on this side of town too?

Midway target. Sounds like stores are preemptively closing for safety.

Is it something specific to Target or do target stores just happen to be in the way?

I'm in the suburbs but agree this feels fundamentally different.

The Target in Minneapolis that was targeted is sort of a special Target. Its the Target site that experiments with LP and surveillance.

I don't think it's just Targets, but their locations. I just read that all of the shopping centers are also closing. Rosedale, Tamarack, etc. Sun Ray Shopping Center which is right off of the freeway before St. Paul meets Oakdale/Woodbury, is currently being looted. There's a Target right near there that I haven't heard anything about.

I didn't watch, but from what I am reading they didn't announce anything except the national guard and additional troopers were being called in. It was a whole lot of nothing, IMO. Its going to be another night of unrest. It already started this afternoon.
People are now freaking out in the suburbs. I live about 25 miles south of where this happened and they closed target near my house because of rumors about next steps by protestors.

IIRC, you're near me... I'm gonna go drive by my Target and see if this is widespread.
ETA: not closed. Surprisingly busy for a Thursday at 7:30.

Corporate has closed 14 stores in the metro for safety reasons.

Northern burbs too. I am hearing rumors of Costco being looted. I think there is panic in the burbs and rumors.
Obviously I don’t want anyone hurt and I don’t want collateral damage to small businesses, but I can’t give a single shit about property loss or damage to large corporations. This anger is justified and this explosion is exactly what we deserve.

I'm hearing unproven but evidence-based rumors that the guy who kicked things off by breaking the windows at the Auto Zone is a Mpls cop. Anyone else hearing that?

The umbrella dude?
Yep. I am seeing fb comments from people that BLM has identified him as a St Paul officer.
