Hey! I haven’t been active in a really long time but always appreciated this board.

I noticed it is not as active, did people move to a different place or is it just that people have left?

Hmmm...I've been on this board a long time and would say most people have become less active because they have all their financial sh*t together and don't really need advice. But, maybe I just ignored the terrible people. Or am one of them? Who knows.

People like me who migrated over from the Knot after this board was created are probably in their 40's now.  It's just a different stage of life from when we were all figuring everything out together.

I think it’s a combination of things. Definitely there was a showing of the ass on racial issues several years ago which cleared a number of the very frequent posters. We’ve also all gotten older without much fresh blood, and finances have often significantly improved, so there isn’t quite as much to talk about. There’s also been a splintering of sorts, a lot of people moved to MM Moms when they had kids. Mine aren’t infants anymore so I don’t check in there so much either. Then, I have paid significantly more attention to politics the last five years than I ever have because of this asshole in the White House, so I read CEP all the time.

Married Life is probably the highest trafficked board if you’re looking for a fast pace.

I assumed that was a comment more directed at ML and MMM. I agree, specific to MM, that people just move on b/c they have their money more figured out.

MM also has had a fair share in terrible people.  V and Lys (sisugal), to name a couple.  Lys was banned from CEP

There were some who left because they showed their ass and were run off the boards, but I don't think it was the majority. When MM Moms was created that pulled a whole lot of people away from MM, and then most of the rest of us either stopped posting much/at all or moved to other boards. I think there are still a decent number of formerly MM people posting on ML or CEP.

We also just don't get a ton of new traffic to GBCN, I think, so as others have mentioned, a lot of people interested in this topic have more or less exhausted what there is to discuss. I'm always up for talking about money, but I don't have much to say about my own - I more or less have figured out my habits and priorities and while there are places to improve, I am well aware of what they are so I don't really need to discuss anymore!

I completely understand...there are just names I miss seeing, some people you just get to know over a period of years and are still interested ya know? I'll check out some of the other boards, it's good to know some people are still around, just elsewhere.

My Bump group from when I was pregnant, we got so close we started a Facebook group and are very active in each other's lives...at least as much as you can online 😂

But yeah, I know this board and Style and Beauty were the main boards I visited and just wondered if there was another place to find some of these people I also appreciated what people brought to the group outside of MM topics.

Now S&B really is dead. I didn't frequent it a lot but I liked their advice when I needed it. I wasn't there enough to understand what happened, but I think there was an incident or a few maybe.

This is me for sure. I wish more people posted b/c I like the discussion, but I don't need advice that often anymore. Maybe all of us should post our budgets so we can tell each other to cut cable. LOL

I wish more people still posted about MM-even though they might not need advice on budgets, I’d still like to hear things people tried which turned out well or things that went to crap. I’d also like to hear more about planning...I still feel like I might be missing something or that my will doesn’t cover things I want it to. We went to a lawyer, but it was paid by my works legal program and sometimes I think he just slapped together something.

I've only ever been on this board and H&G, so I have no idea about drama that happened on other boards.  H&G is pretty dead too, which is sad, because other home decorating boards are INTOLERABLE.  Everyone on Houzz seems to be a McMansion-owning jerk.

And lol that you just realized that MM Moms existed. I'm pretty sure it was miso that would forever get so annoyed with all the posts about kids, so then that's when they made their own board when we came over here from the nest.

Oh, she (spenjamins, not dr. girlfriend) was really terrible. She came back with a different name, and I knew they just rubbed me the wrong way, and then someone called her out as spenjamins. I have never had such a GBCN lightbulb moment in my LIFE. But I can't remember the new name.

I can't either, but it's probably because she didn't stick around long after that. I'm 99% sure she's not around these days.

I was here after the knot and disappeared from the boards for a long time (10 years or so) and just recently came back. I agree that I don’t have as many questions as we are more established now. I loved the budget, Dave Ramsey/Suze Orman/can I afford it, and investing posts from back in the day and would like to see more of them.

This is me too.
And to be honest, while I know what I should be doing I still sometimes make $ mistakes and like this board’s perspective and input. I’ve learned so much over the years and could probably use a refresher on lots of things! lol

For the life of me, I can’t remember her name or why she left. I know it had to do with a group of posters admitting they were annoyed by her posts, but I can’t remember why. I don’t think she was one of the posters who showed her racist ass but maybe I am misremembering. I believe she also linked her money blog.

Was she the same poster who was on track to retire super early?

Shoegal. She's on Twitter, I can't remember what her username is there, but she commented on another personal finance Twitter thread a week or so ago...I thought it looked familiar and it was her. So weird to see her pop up there.

The only drama I remember about her was that she had made a small loan (like $2k?) to a member of her family (her dad?) and was being very strict about the payback terms even though she could obviously afford to cut some slack. But the basement was very pretty.

You definitely are not terrible! I was mostly thinking about the MM loss of Kirkette and SFY who were two of my favorite MM regs.

I also miss Kirkette! I remember her talking about a non-profit she was involved with that ended up being based local to me and I seeked out donating to it  

I've always been more of a lurker although I've been here since before the migration from the Knot as well. I also miss a lot of the money talks. I do think it has to do with the amount of time that has passed and the lack of new people.

Some of these names are familiar but I never would have remembered them on my own! I went from the bump to the knot 10 years ago and found the MM board. I think I had a different user name but changed it because I was worried people IRL would recognize it. Now I just post randomly on various boards here when I have time. The past few years have been a MM roller coaster for me and I’m not in the best shape financially because life happens, but all the positive things I can contribute to this board 😂 I can give great advice from what I learned but implementation IRL is more challenging. I’ve also found the #debtfreecommunity on IG which is entertaining.

I've gone more into MM FB groups than here. I'm not interested in FIRE, since I'm a fed with a good retirement and pension, but it's definitely nice to get additional perspective.

flygirl, we've used 2 lawyers through DH's legal plan and they were night and day. It's definitely still something you kind of need to "shop around" to see if the lawyer meshes with you or not. The first one was awful, but we just needed a basic will. The second one was awesome.

ssmjlm, what did the 2nd lawyer do that was better? We got a pretty basic will-as in it specifies that everything goes to our DS when we die or a second list if all of us died. Then it specifies who DS would go live with, that’s about it. I don’t know if there should have been a trust created or if there is anything missing. He was a perfectly nice lawyer, I just don’t think he went into anything in depth because of what he was getting reimbursed.
