McGrath sent an email stating McConnell isn’t going to be at their scheduled debate tonight. Instead he will be confirming the SCJ.
I am barely paying attention to the SCOTUS nonsense, but I should. It’s just so discouraging when I see these assholes racing to appoint someone so awful when they can’t even agree to do anything that helps ordinary Americans during a pandemic.
Around here, at least, there are protocols for voting if you have symptoms or are sick. Obviously it's not ideal, but if someone were to come down sick before voting, they could alert an election official and be taken over to a separate area to vote that is apart from other people. I assume if they are wearing a mask, sanitizing hands, and social distancing, someone could actually do this without exposing others.
Obviously I'm not advocating for doing this, and we should all vote ASAP, but there are a number of reasons why that may not be realistic for everyone -for example, my state's early voting just started today, so if I became symptomatic tomorrow, I would not be "safe" to vote until after the election. It's too late to request an absentee ballot. I don't expect to become symptomatic, obviously, but it does pose a problem if someone does. I guess in my state Biden is basically guaranteed a win, so maybe I'd just skip voting. But if I lived in a swing state... I honestly don't know what the right thing to do would be.
8 days left, I think it's time to make these election news/chat threads daily threads.
Here's a piece about how SCOTUS is ruling on emergency election-related cases so far. The main takeaway - they're not sharing reasons why they're deciding one way or the other.
This was a really pleasant surprise. Our house is in a VERY Republican area. It went all in for Trump in 2016 and from what I can see on our Neighborhood page, it seemed the same this time around. I thought for sure it would be dark red on this map. It’s still (R) but it is the very lightest shade of pink, almost neutral. This gives me hope that there are a lot of quiet Biden supporters around me.
I'm writing postcards and here are the active campaigns that I can choose to write for:
Thoughts below. But there are you getting names? I thought most postcard stuff was done given that we're about a week out.
Jaime Harrison in SC - I think that JH is probably doing fine but this is a close race. Jen Metzger in NY - This is a state level election and postcards would go a long way in local race but I do not think the NY senate is likely to flip if you do have to make a choice to narrow your focus. There is a lot of money flowing for what would normally be a sleepy race. spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/ny-state-of-politics/2020/10/12/teachers-and-police-unions--plus-a-billionaire--battle-over-senate Hillary Scholten in MI - Super close race in MI. This might be my first focus. Abby Finkenauer in IA - This doesn't appear as close. I would put this 3rd.
Does anyone have insight into these races / any thoughts on which one(s) I should focus on?
Thank you as well! Just signed up to write more. I already did about 40 for Jaime.

Obviously if a state doesn’t have a long early voting period or none at all, there is no choice for voters. But my point is that where there is an opportunity, take it.

Not sure if this has been mentioned- I see a lot of posts about ads that make people cry but this is definitely not one of those.
Last week I saw this short 15 sec ad on YouTube. It was totally bizarre and I tried to describe it to DH. "There's 80s exercising and something about pumping up the vote and an bald eagle." It happened so fast I couldn't see who made it. I watched like a billion more YouTube videos to try to find but never did. I told DH it must have been some kind of fever dream lol.
I will never ever stop hearing James Carville, in the last days of the 2016 election, begging the "undecideds" to think of the courts. I hold grudges real well.
ACB was just confirmed, so I kicked in another donation to Greenfield in Iowa.
I think losing the Senate again will make me more heartbroken than the WH at this point.
I knew it was coming, but I’m still so sad and angry seeing the headlines.
I don't even know what to do. I am sick and angry and scared and... I feel like it doesn't matter anymore. They have gotten the thing that matters.
And we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that it *does* matter, even if we win the election next week. If this was a nothingburger, the Rs wouldn’t have made this their goal since the 70s. They wouldn’t have held up Garland and they wouldn’t have rammed this through 8 days before an election. Time to expand the court. I’m done taking the high road.
Between the ACB confirmation and the NYT political donation tracker, I’m ready to cry. I just don’t have the energy.
My neighborhood has ONLY Biden/Harris signs. I’ve been so proud and excited. Apparently that’s a big fat lie and there’s a huge disconnect between public and private political behavior, because people in my zip have donated 2.5x more to Trump than Biden.
Apologies if this is behind a pay wall as it is for me. The headline seems descriptive enough:
Fort Worth voting site closed after poll worker tests positive for coronavirus
This is where I voted, during the window in which the worker was present. I had surgery last week and had a COVID test, negative...but it's such a mess for everyone and is stoking fear for people who haven't been getting out of their homes.

And to add to the SCOTUS shit sandwich, they blocked later ballots in WI from getting counted. It’s not like there is an uncontrolled outbreak in the whole state right now or anything.
On Twitter, there is a lot of talk about Kavanaugh citing Bush v. Gore here, which is really swell.
We definitely cannot get to the point where we need these ballots to be counted for Biden to win. If he can pull off FL, AZ and/or NC Tuesday night, I will feel so much better. Fuck, give us Texas too as a wonderfully unexpected surprise to really make it stick.
