AAM2012, hoping you can get a confirmation of what is going on soon. We've been experiencing some issues getting info re my dad, I assume due to how busy they are. On Saturday we called the hospital multiple times over 12 hours to see how he did Friday night and the phone kept ringing. One time we were told a nurse would call back but they didn't so no update on Saturday. Hopefully they're able to figure out exactly what is going on with your mom quickly.

Thanks and hope you’re dad is doing well too! Nurses told me so many times they’d call me back and wouldn’t. When she was in ICU obviously they were better at keeping me updated.
Prior to her being Covid positive I did get quite a bit of results via the hospital patient portal so that may be an option for you, with dad’s permission of course. Friday-Sunday always were busy times so I tried not to call on those days. I found out the times when nurses change from AM to PM and generally when doctors make their rounds, and didn’t call during those time frames.
Also, I’d say don’t let “they’re busy” to be an excuse for not getting reasonable updates. I kept saying that and DH told me to stop giving them that excuse as I was only calling every few days and my mom needs an advocate...even if I can’t be there in person.
I hope you don’t need any of the tips I mentioned above but wanted to share in case it helps you get updates :-)

15 vaccine sites here have cancelled 4 days of appointments because we didn't get shipment of what thought we'd receive from the government. Those appointments have been rescheduled for next week. Other sites are still going as scheduled.

I didn’t see this. Now I’ll have to go ask around if anyone was canceled.

Yeah a bunch of DH’s coworkers had their appointments rescheduled to next week. I really hope they can get the shots next week.
Is this even something the federal government can actually mandate re: who must get the vaccine in any state? I feel like even removing useless Trump from the equation, states were going to need to come up with their own schedules and the feds were just going to be able to provide guidelines. Like, I don't think Biden can wave a magic wand and force every state to vaccinate X group next. But, it really is frustrating especially when you're so close to a state border.
The CDC gives guidelines, but there is no mandatory rule. Part of the problem is simply having enough vaccines. My state got 40% of their initial shipment. The last shipment was cut by 50% per an internal meeting I had today. We have actually done a pretty good job of giving out the vaccines we have gotten, and are moving into tier 1b, but we haven’t been able to vaccinate all of tier 1a yet. There are a lot of factors including staffing. Last week we had to close down vaccines at one hospital because otherwise there weren’t enough nurses for patient care and we are *only* 75% full on any given day in my county. Trust me when I say, we are frustrated too. So many of us are wearing multiple hats trying to do the job of 3 people at the same time.

AAM2012 I'm sorry for what you are going through with your mom. I hope you can get better updates soon. I do know we often need to advocate for ourselves/family and that's a really big stress. Covid has made that so much worse when we can't be there. Do you live nearby? Can you visit at all? I promise this is not making excuses for the nurses, I just know how insane their assignments are right now, do you have a number for a charge nurse? They might be able to give you a little update? At least on my unit they know the patients will enough they would be comfortable doing that.
I'm really sorry that you are in this position. I would hate it, and I would be frustrated as your mom's nurse if I couldn't get you what you needed.
Or - could you set a time every other day or so to talk with the nurses? Sometimes that helps too, it can be planned around meds/therapies?
pearls I'm sorry you are going through the same thing. I know when I'm on the floor it's not that I don't care about updating families, we have just been so busy. That's not an excuse though you deserve information. ❤️

Oh, of course! No criticism at all towards the people like you doing as much as you can (and then some) with the resources that you have.

Velar Fricative, no offense taken. I just wanted to help give a fuller picture. I know in the 2 states I hold a license people don’t really understand that a lot of these jobs are done by the same person. Agencies would be stretched thin even without factoring staff being out sick with COVID because there just aren’t enough resources to go around.

Thank you. I do live nearby and haven’t been able to see her at all for over a month (she went from the hospital to inpatient facility and back to the hospital around Christmas). There’s been no exceptions as our hospitals are at capacity.
My mom is now back in ICU and has been intubated. I am internally dying on so many levels.
I totally get that nurses and doctors have been overwhelmed, however what I experienced isn’t an excuse.
AAM2012 no it's not I'm so sorry that's got to be so difficult. I wish I was still in the hospital (I'm on leave) so I could come up with more current solutions to help you. All I can think of is getting to the operator and getting the charge nurse for the ICU if you can't get updates. I'm sending you so many hugs and good thoughts.
AAM2012, thank you for the tips re getting info, they are appreciated. I understand what it is like, being close but not being able to be there. At first when my parents got COVID I was 1,000 miles away where I live as neither of them wanted me to travel, but then once my dad was in ICU and was intubated I felt like I couldn't stay there, so my H and I flew up to be closer and be with my mom. It's almost felt worse at times in a way because no matter how close I am no one is permitted to visit him while he's in the hospital. Once he can get to a skilled nursing facility we potentially could, but that isn't guaranteed either. I wish I had some magic words to type to help you, and am sorry I don't. I am sending all the positive thoughts to you and your mom.
Today was interesting. I was amazingly alert for my stay in the PACU. Much more so that usual (great anesthesia folks today). My big take away was about half the beds were set up for covid. At least I assume. Rather than curtains on chains, there were full tarp-like walls, tapped to the floor, with zipper doors. Most were empty of being used as a curtained room - like the one next to me had a lady in it. But I could tell quickly her main door was open, so I assume not a covid pt. Pretty sure I passed one on my way out. One pod had the front door zipped closed. There was a window in it and I could see a person in the bed. I just took a quick glance. Overall, I was glad to see so many of the covid beds empty. But, for covid ots who don’t need ICU, just oxygen (so, like a PACU use), they are shipping them a few mile away to the field hospital at the convention center.
FWIW, my previous surgery in October was at a sister hospital a few miles away. I did not notice these “isolation beds” then. But I was at the flagship for the medical school today, vs the outpost med school affiliatate. But it was still middle of the city. 🤷♀️

@@@
COVID work question... Co-worker and his son tested positive on the 11th. His wife and daughter tested negative. Daughter tested negative twice & returned to school. Yesterday she tested positive. Could/should coworker come back to work? only if no symptoms + negative test? He says he just wished his whole family got it at the same time....
Sorry I forgot the @@@ - thanks to whoever fixed it!

Since he tested positive, the fact that she tested positive later is irrelevant. He needs to wait the standard 10 days past when his symptoms appeared/at least 24 hours fever free before returning to work. He does not need to test negative.
However...they really effed up in sending her to school. Either they were willfully negligent or completely uninformed in the CDC guidelines.
Agree with lemoncupcake about time frames and that they screwed up sending her to school. Here is our county guidelines. @ My ds had to quarantine after exposure at school. He just did the 14 days no test.
WHAT are Other Options for Ending Home Quarantine? Two other options to end the home quarantine may be considered ONLY IF you are able to follow strict precautions at ALL times: o 10 days of quarantine have been completed AND you do not have any symptoms ▪ You are still at risk for developing and spreading COVID and must still follow the precautions below, including through the end of the 14-day quarantine period. o 7 days of quarantine have been completed AND you do not have any symptoms AND you have had a negative test no earlier than day 5 after last contact with the person who tested positive. ▪ A negative test does not rule out COVID infection. ▪ You are still at risk for developing and spreading COVID and must still follow the precautions below, including through the end of the 14-day quarantine period. ▪ PCR tests are more accurate tests. Healthcare providers should prioritize rapid tests for symptomatic patients or testing as part of an outbreak investigation. Strict precautions include: o Monitoring closely for symptoms and isolate immediately if any symptoms develop o Wearing a face covering at all times in public settings o Practicing social distancing -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the info...good to know he can come back to work
Regarding @@ daughter, I think since she tested negative twice, they were cleared by the school?? I don't know all the details.
If you live in a house with a covid + person who is NOT in self-isolation and is interacting with family members, the family members 14-day quarantine (or 7 day post-exposure testing window) does not start until the day 10 of the covid+ person's illness...when they are considered no longer contagious!
Thanks for the info...good to know he can come back to work
ummm no he can’t. Today is still within those 10 days. How irresponsible of all of them.
Our family is still home from DH exposure on the 11th and the covid calculator is pretty clear. And I’m pissed at your coworker and his family for messing this up. Because that is exactly how we ended up in this situation - DH’s coworker didn’t stay home for ten days after his positive test. Follow the guidelines people. If your coworker is at work today then *everyone exposed to him* now needs to isolate for exposure for 10 days. Or at least isolate for 7 days and then can return if they’ve had no symptoms and a negative test.

For anyone who is interested, I ran across this press release from a company that is working on genetic sequencing of the virus and put together a dashboard to track cases of new variants, including the British one, in the U.S.

Biden signed a bunch more EO's related to COVID per Axios
"It's gonna get worse before it gets better": President Biden expects 100,000 Americans to die from COVID-19 during his first 6 weeks in office.
The big picture: Biden said he's putting America on a wartime footing against the virus, signing 10 executive orders today. The plan includes:
More supplies: Orders new supplies of PPE, testing materials and vaccines through the Defense Production Act. More funding: Increases federal reimbursement for National Guard personnel and emergency supplies. More masks: Requires on federal property and for people who are in airports and using many forms of transportation. More data: Massive efforts for “real-time” federal data collection for schools, a public dashboard on cases, testing and vaccination, and hospital admissions. More guidance: Mandates masks on planes and requires COVID tests before flying. Requires negative test for international travelers before departing for the U.S. More help for schools: Orders the Department of Education and HHS to provide schools and local communities with resources to safely reopen schools. The big picture: The executive orders are providing a more uniform approach in controlling the pandemic across state lines, Marisa Fernandez tells me.
The Trump administration left governors and public health departments to coordinate most of their own logistics. Between the lines: Biden's mask rules "come as close to a national mask mandate as his federal powers allow, because only states and municipalities can require residents to wear masks at a local level," WashPost reports.
The bottom line: "You're going to be hearing a lot from Dr. Fauci again," Biden promised, saying that public health officials would be "free from political interference."
My dad is back in the ER for the 3rd time in almost as many days. He had the surgery he needed this morning but had to go back. I know they take so many precautions but I'm just worried he will get sick there. Also it's killing me that he's in so much pain, that I can't be there. My mom is stuck in the car waiting alone and I can't even drive up and be with her because of my shoulder surgery. All of this just sucks.
Thanks for the info...good to know he can come back to work

Huh? FWIW, we are going through this. Person A was exposed Jan 8. Asymptomatic. Tested on Jan 16. Test comes back positive Jan 19. Persons B-E in household begin exhibiting symptoms by Jan 18. Contact Tracing says to stay home for 10 days since the last person with symptoms started to feel sick.
In your timeline, family member 14 day quarantine wouldn’t start until Jan 26. Maybe your timeline is correct if no symptoms and negative tests?

Today is day 11 from his positive test and it didn’t even sound like he was back yet, so yes he can go back assuming he’s fever free etc. Sounds like this family had the shittiest of timing with everyone getting it spaced out, so yeah, they could have definitely handled that better.
Around here, the count isn't inclusive so today is day 10. i wish it were day 11. I am so sick of being isolated for things I have no control over. (This is our fourth bout of isolation, but the first time we haven't been able to cut it a little shorter with testing because of stupid logistics.)
