Our massive whole house remodel is starting in a couple months and we're picking interior finishes now. I've always been drawn to green cabinets but I can't decide if we'll regret it or not. My other choice would be white. Floors will be wood in a medium stain (darker than shown in the renderings), counters will likely be honed black granite (trying to get a soapstone-type look). There are lots of windows in the kitchen and it will be very open to the dining room so I'm not too worried about the room feeling dark. I'm mostly just worried about getting sick of so much green!
Curious what others' opinions are - go for the green or stick to the safe option of white? If we do green in the kitchen, we'll do white in the adjoining mudroom, and vice versa.
I love the idea of green but can see how it could get overwhelming in that setup. Have you considered green for the bottoms and white for the uppers?
The designers suggested that in the beginning but we really disliked how it looked. So we decided to do either/or.
If we go with the green, we'll keep everything else simple (like white subway tile backsplash.) If we go with the white, I'll probably do some color in the backsplash.
I think it looks great! It looks like you'd be able to have everything repainted white without having to do any other work if you get tired of it or just want a change down the road.
I am not a fan of the green. It is also not my kitchen, so that opinion should mean very little to you.
If you’re doing the renovation with you in mind for the long term and love the green, go for it. If you think it will end up on the market in 5-10 years, you may want to consider the broad appeal.
Our old house, we played everything safe. This house, we’ve made bolder (for us) choices since we have no plan of leaving in the next 20 years. And I enjoy it so much more than the safe choices.
Green is super in for cabinets right now but I think the trend will be fleeting. I struggled because everyone was saying white kitchens are over but cabinets are such a huge expense that we went for white on the perimeter and a black island.
Our tops are white and bottoms are dark blue and I personally love it. We thought we were being unique, but jokes on us, it was just the beginning of a very popular trend! But I still love it! I love the green, but would probably just due the lowers.
I love it. I agree that it's a potentially fleeting trend. I think it's all about the right color and making sure you have good lighting and brightness. (For me, at least... I have learned that I love a BRIGHT kitchen.)
Your post reminded me of this Instagram post the other day... DROOL.
If you like green (I personally don’t because it looks terrible with my skin tone) I say go for it. However I would suggest being very careful about choosing an overly dark green, especially with a honed black countertop and wood floors. That is going to absorb a lot of light. I would want to have full undercabinet lighting, potlights and pendants to make it nice and bright.
I love painted cabinets, but I might do green on the bottom and some of the floor to ceiling cabinets and keep some of the uppers white. I also definitely think the cabinets need to be simple in design as well.
I immediately thought of Jenna Sue's kitchen in one of her rental houses that they did a mix of green and white:
When we painted our cabinets about 10 years ago, we tried a shade similar to that green and I didn't care for it. Then we tried lighter, and it was too light.
Top cabinets: SW Hardware; Lower cabinets: SW Techno Gray
We settled in the middle with SW Chatroom, and after about 10 years I still like it, in the grand scheme of what it is (an inexpensive cosmetic fix for a dated kitchen).
For me the darker shade was just too heavy, especially on the upper cabinets. That was true even with white/cream pretty much everywhere else in the kitchen. I might have felt differently if the dark color were on the lower cabinets. YMMV though.
Susie , I love the color you chose! We are hoping to choose from the stock colors that are available for cabinets, so it would be an olive green that is probably quite a bit darker. I'll be seeing the sample today. We've been told custom colors will add 30% to the cost of the cabinets!

I love green. Growing up my grandma had BRIGHT turquoise cabinets. I still think uppers in green is too much. I think I would do green lowers and white uppers. Especially with black countertops, it would be so dark even with the windows.
I really like green cabinets, I would go for it. I did green cabinets in my first house (Very similar to the color Susie posted) 10 years ago, and I didn't get tired of it for few years I lived there. I would only be cautious about how dark the cabinets are with the flooring to ensure that even with all the windows that it doesn't feel too dark.
I switched with our current house. We did white cabinets in the house we built 2 years ago with extra long white subway tile, dark countertops, and light gray floors, and it at times feels really white/light to me even with the dark countertops.
I did green in my laundry room renovation and I would absolutely love to do it in the kitchen. However, I think black honed granite will be much to dark - can you consider lighter countertops?
Take my opinion lightly though because I hate my black granite countertops with the fire of a thousand suns.
Thanks all for the feedback. I'm really not a fan of the two-tone look in our kitchen because of the layout - it's not clear whether to treat the pantry cabinet and fridge cabinet as uppers or lowers and looks odd to me either way. If it were laid out differently, it might be easier to differentiate.
This is my inspiration kitchen. In the end, though, we'll probably take the safe route of white and go crazy in the mudroom instead with olive cabinets and maybe fun wallpaper.

froggy76 to get the look from your inspiration kitchen I think you would really have to spring for the custom paint colour. That’s much lighter than I expected.

I think you're right. I got the sample yesterday and I think it's too dark. It looks similar to my inspiration pic only when it's in direct sunlight. I still like it but might just do it in the mudroom instead. I don't want to spend money on a custom color.

My DH requested darker counters and he has very few strong opinions so I take his input when he does! We had black galaxy granite in our last house and loved it- people always say it looks dirty but I never had that problem. Still trying to find a dark counter with a little color variation though- we have some good options. I agree that green + black would be very dark. I think we're probably going to go with white cabinets instead.
I think just doing the green in the mudroom will end up being a great option. We're doing our pantry area in SW Cape Verde, which is a color I love, but thought might be too much for the entire kitchen.

I like the green but would get tired of it. It also reminds me of the avocado green appliances of yesteryear. I would maybe do an accent of green cabinets on some feature focal point or do white cabinets with green walls.

I think it could look great - the rendering looks a little dark and dull. But you add colorful/interesting window treatments, a rug, and nice lighting it could look great! I love green cabinets

We are currently building a custom home and Green was my inspiration for my kitchen. One of the model homes had a wonderfully sage green cabinets with an almond color for the island. In our new house we will be doing white cabinets, and my island will be PPG's Lottery Winnings green. (Which will also be the color of the board and batten outside and the siding on 2nd floor bonus room siding).
