Kim Potter was named as the Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright after mistakenly thinking her gun was a Taser. She is the police union president and a veteran officer who served on a law enforcement honor guard.
Fuck police unions. All they are good for is protecting racists and murderers.
She "loved every minute" of being a police officer? WTF.
She’s playing her role. Poor victim of terrible circumstances, wonderful cop that just loved her job as an officer and a representative to and for her fellow officers. She is setting herself up right away to be likeable to the people that will always listen to that crap.
I mean, who really cares about the details when cop Carol is so sweet and wonderful except this one tiny little hiccup on her otherwise clean record. Straight up stand up citizen right there! Oh, wait. Someone died? Oh no! That’s unfortunate because caring cop Carol is so sweet it is too bad that happened to her.
Alllllllllll the fucking sarcasm there. She’s appealing the the crowd she needs. It’s disgusting.

Just wanted to point out that she previously bailed out / covered up for officers who killed either a man with autism or a man with mental illness — I’ve seen conflicting reports on what his condition was or if it was both but it’s a good reminder that militarized police slaughter people with disabilities regularly.

Yup. I have had several mh clients killed in my career. The lack of training and a clear training conformity is a major issue. There are solutions but they don't want it for obvious reasons.

Wow, I didn't realize this. And she "loved every minute of it." F'ing disgusting.

Just to clarify and absolutely not defend - she was first on the scene AFTER two officers shot and killed a mentally ill individual
In 2019, Potter was among the first to arrive at a home in the Minneapolis suburb after two officers fatally shot a mentally ill man six times after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife, according to a report released by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office last year.
Once paramedics arrived, Potter ordered both of the officers to leave the house, sit in separate squad cars and deactivate their body cameras. As the union president at the time, she escorted one of the officers from the scene back to the police station and was later present when BCA investigators interviewed both officers, the report states.
The officers were not charged in the fatal shooting after prosecutors found they acted with “reasonable fear” after first firing their Tasers.
I'm struggling to put into words what I'm seeing here and elsewhere. There's been a huge proliferation of bad information being put out in regards to this case, and about Daunte Wright himself. It seems we (collective) have started trusting memes and catchy outrageous posts over trumpeting the truth of what is happening, which is salacious enough without putting outright fabrications. It starts to feel disingenuous in our outrage if we're just looking for the next post to make people sick over the "facts".

Thanks- I misunderstood the phrase “she was involved with the killing” in an article. Most people (those without a badge) would be called accomplices to a murder.
Point stands about murdering people with disabilities.

I know what you mean.
I definitely shared something earlier that wound up being false and deleted. It was shared by someone I generally trust and I think it’s tough when everything seems possible because I can’t think of a situation outrageous enough that it wouldn’t still be plausible.
Honestly at this point I think most of the Facebook/Instagram posting feels disingenuous and just like shouting into a void. I don’t think silence is the answer, but posting the same thing to all my friends who are all posting the same things already seems pointless- especially since I think a lot of people are treating their social media platform like it’s activism.

His parents did an interview today and it was so sad 😞
I keep thinking of how the officer said “oh shit I just shot him.” I say oh shit when I spill my coffee. When I forget something (which is always). When I find dog hair on a nice outfit I need to wear. I just feel like shooting someone deserves more than an “oh shit.”
MSNBC has been showing Daunte White's aunt speaking. She said that George Floyd's girlfriend was Daunte's former teacher. Although that's just a coincidence, it still hits me hard.

What should she have said? “Oh, fuck?” “Oh My God?” People say all kinds of things when they screw up, and literally NOTHING she could have said or not said would have been okay, because she had just shot an unarmed man. I mean, if she’d said “take that!” or “got him!” that would be particularly damning. But I wouldn’t attribute too much meaning to “oh shit” in this situation.
For many, tasers are worn on the same side as the gun (see in video the other officer had it on the same side) because it's used by the dominant hand, or it's cross-body but holstered to be grabbed by the dominant hand. But you'd think that even muscle memory would tell you that if it's on the opposite side, you reach cross-body for the taser. So apparently the gun is the automatic muscle-memory device she's accustomed to reaching for.

Yeah, I get it. For me that’s casual and everyday. There’s nothing better she could have said unless it was “save him now because I just shot him.”

Agreed. I miss when sources were required.
You can be the change you want to see...ask for a source. It's within the social norm on this board to do so, so if it troubles you by all means call it out when you see it.
Which sounds condescending...but I mean it. I agree it's important, and just like some of our other board "things" (@ tagging, not C&Ping whole articles) if we all just get in the habit of a quick call when somebody slips then it'll shift back into favor. I mean, lord and Pixy knows that we backslide on the @ tagging on a semi-regular basis and need our hands slapped. Just have to all watch each other.

Also agree. The first two pages of this thread are particularly egregious with speculation based on “rumors” that ended up being false. :/
