I've added masks to my back to school shopping. It's hard to believe this will be the third school year impacted by Covid.
Also, I have a mask chewer in my household. My 7 yr old has chewed holes in a few of her cloth masks. 😳
DD1 is a mask chewer as well. I started buying her masks from Old Navy because they are cheap. They are about $1 each and I consider them one step above disposable. I check them every time I wash and toss when she chews through all three layers.
Thanks for all of the responses. I was able to take my son to CVS to get the PCR test that I administered. The website said 1-2 days (so I was hoping maybe we'd get the results tomorrow) but the person at the pharmacy said 2-4 days. Now I'm debating buying an over the counter rapid test. It is not the end of the world if he misses summer school the rest of the week, but it's only a 3 week program so he'll basically be missing 1/3 of it. They don't have school on Fridays.

Even the antigen OTC are supposed to be taken twice, at least 36hrs apart FYI

Not sure what state you’re in, but in some (most? Not CA) states, Walgreens has a rapid PCR test called Rapid IDnow that you get the results back in a couple of hours. We’ve used it twice for travel this summer for our kids. It’s free, too.

I'm thankful for the CDC recommendation of mask wearing. I'm wondering if schools will be able to allow people inside or not. Last year, no one was allowed inside the building so we couldn't have any PTO events. I hope we don't have another year of no school events.
I bought a bunch of new masks from Kohl’s last week when they had free shipping for cardholders. The same masks I paid $6.99 for last year were around $1-2 each. The Carter’s 3 packs (for my little ones) were under $1 each. I also bought another box of disposables on Amazon for my kids to keep as spares at half the price they were just this past spring.
But I still seriously can’t believe we’re looking at possibly another whole school year of masks even for the secondary level.
ETA: Our Gov is recommending people follow CDC guidelines but not enacting any mandates, even for the schools, at this point.

I wish I would have taken more time looking at my options before I went with CVS. At this point I think I'll wait. It's good for future reference.
Iowa’s Governor has stated that the new CDC guidelines are “not grounded in reality or common sense.”
So that’s awesome.
Yeah, I was not heartened by the new CDC guidelines because I know our governor will ignore them and continue to ban mask mandates. She is the actual worst.

I got invited to a baby shower for H's niece in August. I initially accepted, then realized that she's still* very anti-vax. Trying to decide if I should give the real reason for changing my RSVP to no, or making something up.
*This is the same family that didn't meet DS until he was a year old because H's sister didn't vax any of her kids. Now I wonder if she was lying when she said she caught them up with shots.

We did this Monday for DS. He was stuffy and had a sore throat and we're staying with my parents this weekend for a wedding so wanted to be safe. Had the results in just under an hour. (Negative)
But at least here you can't (or aren't supposed to) use it for travel. Only if you're showing symptoms or have had a known close exposure.

New Mexico is requiring masks this year in school and I'm so happy. My mom and aunts are teachers and my only nephews attend school in the state. I just want my mom to get through her last year safely!
My hometown district has said they are also going to restrict parents walking kids into class, which is upsetting a lot of my old friends. I get it- from both sides. I can't imagine not being able to walk a new little one into their class on their first day of school, but I'm sure there would be at least one parent who refused to mask and would cause a scene.

Things shut down in the middle of kinder for my youngest son. He attended his first day of first grade in person on the "big kids" part of campus himself. I stood at the gate and waved as one of the instructional aides walked him. I thought it would be terrible, but he looked so proud of himself to be walking in there all independently. It was a lot less of a deal than I made it out to be leading up to that day.
My kids’ school district just announced they might now require masks in September due to the new CDC recommendations. They are waiting for to see what the governor, the state health department and the state education department recommend. They are now just watching the data and waiting until mid-to late August to make a final decision.

DD1 started K last year and it was heartbreaking to watch her walk into the school by herself. We walked to school and dropped her off at the front door. She was nervous and scared but she did great. It is a amazing how much she matured in that year. We were fortunate our schools were in person starting in the fall last year.

Aww. It is okay. Our school has never allowed this (they just think kids adjust better without parents in the class room). Heck my kids just get on the bus and go for their first day. Kids will be okay

I’m going to have to pull my kid from summer camp. When they dropped the indoor mask requirements, the camp decided that means kids too, even though every kid there is under 12. He’s been going to this camp since he was 6, loves it, and this is his last year. They’re not budging and county health said all they can do is “strongly recommend.” I’m bitter.

FWIW, our district didn't allow parents to walk kids into class even pre-covid.
First day of kinder was "meet and line up at X door."

I’m sorry. I’m having a hard time dealing with a lot of lasts that my oldest has missed (or things that he’s just grown out of) due to the pandemic. I’m angry. And sad. Especially the ones that could have happened this summer, if people weren’t such fools.

Also bitter. I’m in no-mask land. We are petitioning the school board to mandate masks, but even last year when it was mandated, compliance was iffy at best. It’s my daughter’s kindergarten year, and I should be happily sending her off to public school. Not worrying if I should keep her in the prek/kindergarten hybrid class she’s currently in at a very covid-safe but also very expensive daycare.

For me, it's just another thing that has changed over time since I was a kid and probably better for the students anyway. My hometown used to make a huge deal about first day during milestone years/transitions and I think they still do, which is why everyone is up in arms about it. But it's a small, rural area and everything bad is the Gov's fault, apparently.
In a very miraculous turn, our district just announced that they will require masks for all students and staff, regardless of vaccination status.
What I have heard from some insiders here, is that this decision is based on strong pressure from the CDPH, and most importantly - the company that provides insurance coverage for most districts is requiring it in order to keep coverage.
Our district is still offering an online option for people who cannot/choose not to risk exposure, or choose not to wear a mask. Another local district announced last night (though maybe this’ll change now...) that they will not require teachers to enforce the mask mandate and will not exclude a child from an education because of it. Which...is garbage, but I’ll save that screenshot for the next dress code debate.

I’ve never heard of allowing parents into the building basically ever. My district has never, at least not back even to when I started K there (mid 80s). Parents always dropped off, said goodbye, and the kids went in with their classmates. I promise it will be fine, even if not what you envisioned! However, it really does stink to have yet another unexpected change thrust on us because selfish people won’t take basic precautions during a pandemic.

I hate my school district right now.
I'm in Florida, and our idiot governor has claimed that he won't allow mask mandates. He was quoted as saying he didn't want masks in school because kids shouldn't be "muzzled." Idiot.
I'm kind of freaking out. School starts in 2 weeks, and as of right now we're pretending Covid never happened. No masks, and they're planning a full, normal meet the teacher day on the day before school starts - all 800 students, plus parents and siblings, in the school to meet their teachers with everyone crammed in hallways over a small 3 hour window.
Of course, I'm the same school district that was in the national (and international) news for our strict and outdated dress code. And the school board's response has been to make the dress code *stricter*.

Same except Georgia. Right down to the school code. FML.
Our neighborhood hosted a meeting with the superintendent yesterday and the area school principals. I wasn't able to attend but from what I hear school will be 2019. No masks, no distancing, no virtual at all, no quarantines, no contact tracing, pre-Covid sick rules apply.
The hospitals, located in Little Rock and Springdale, said 24 pediatric patients were hospitalized with Covid-19 on Wednesday, a 50% increase over any previous peak during the pandemic. Of the 24 children, seven are in intensive care and two are on ventilators, the hospital said. More than half of them could have been vaccinated -- anyone 12 and over is eligible for a free shot -- but none of those hospitalized had done so.
