I’m on a a TNF Inhibitor so technically qualify for the third shot. I have an email into my doctor. I’ll, of course, take it if my doctor says I should but I’m strangely nervous so wondering if anyone has any good links or information on this dose.
- I did not get any adverse reaction from the first two besides a sore arm. Is that luck or will this likely be the same?
- Do I need to receive the same shot this time? I received Pfizer - should I get a third dose or is their a benefit (or I guess danger) to “mixing”?
- Are these the exact same shots or have they been tweaked at all to account for variants?
I have not found much info and the little I have read has been contradictory.
You also need to check about if your meds need to be stopped before or after. Mine technically doesn’t but I just had an infusion Friday so I’m planning to wait a week or so. I’m not really looking forward to round 3 of side effects as mine were fairly strong but I don’t want to drown in my own lung fluid either, so I’m not hesitating at all (except the delay because infusion side effects suck enough).
Edit: it’s the same shots. They have not released variant specific boosters yet.
Very I have read the people that have gotten third shots have had similar side effects to the second, it’s hard to know though as not many people can attest. I don’t know the answers to the rest of your questions.
I think in Canada they've been mix and matching (for the standard two doses) and I haven't seen any kind of problems reported with that.
I would personally try to find Moderna since it seems to be performing better in real world data. But I'm guessing the difference with Pfizer would be small.
I know someone at Moderna and she said they are testing ones that are updated for the variants but AFAIK they are not available to the public, and the ones you could get would be the same as the original.

Thanks. I have to be off the week before and the week after. I just took what I suspect will be my last shot for two weeks assuming my doc advises I get the third dose.
The only person I know of yet who has circled back started with J&J and recently got dose 1 of one of the others (I’m not sure which one). She said she was fine after J&J and felt a little lousy for a day with the other one. I think the second dose must be coming up shortly.

As of now, it’s the same shot. But both companies are developing a vaccine that aims to better target the variants — no idea what the ETA on that is, but could be worth asking your doctor if it’s worth waiting.

Yes, we've had a lot of mix and match. I had astrazeneca days before Canada pulled it for potential clotting issues, then got Moderna for my second.
I am on a TNF inhibitor as well (infliximab) and recently got the third dose. The side effects were similar to my second dose - very mild, short lived and did not impact my daily functioning.
I have Pfizer for all 3. No new formulation for now but variant specific boosters may be available at some point in the future.
How long has the 3rd dose been available? I thought this was a brand new offering. I'm surprised to read that people in this thread have received a 3rd already.
Also - I haven't seen any articles mention J&J. Are they offering a booster, or suggesting those needing a "3rd dose" who had 1 dose of J&J go with Moderna or Pfizer for their booster?
I got my third dose last week when I read that immunocompromised people (2.5% of the population) represent 40-44% of hospitalizations for breakthrough infections.
This was between the announcement that a third dose would be available to us and the ACIP meeting. I felt gross jumping the line until I realized there is no line* anymore. Walk ins welcome, no one walking in at all.
The state of Mississippi started offering them to immunocompromised people almost two weeks ago, ahead of the meetings— they told doctors to assess for need. The NYT estimated last week that over 1M have received a third dose, many immunocompromised or healthcare workers (I am both) and many at the recommendation of their medical providers.
*and the vaccines are not being sent to places abroad where there are lines.
tacom Did you go to a pharmacy? I think I’ll need a third shot. I have an appointment with my rheumatologist Tuesday. If he agrees, I’ll get it on my way home. Just curious if you had any issues getting the pharmacy or health department to agree to give it to you.

I went to a CVS inside of a Target and didn’t have any issues. If you’d like more details, feel free to reach out via pm

If I qualified for a 3rd shot, which I don't, I would 100% get Moderna right now. My first two were Pfizer.
I don't have articles to link, but I've read news stories saying they've found mix and match to be at least as effective not. And Moderna is performing better against Delta than Pfizer.
Addition to the studies, I think a lot of people are already sneaking 3rd doses (it's apparently not hard at all), and I think it would be making the news if it was causing problems. Even if it was causing relatively minor and uncommon problems.
I am getting my third dose on Tuesday. I booked online via CVS. It my understanding it needs to be the same brand but my Dr told me mixing was fine just so long it was an MRNA one.

I am tempted to get a third dose because of a health issue. It would have to be by going to a different provider because 3rd shots are only given by my employer right now for those who have immunodeficiencies. In a recent town hall for docs it was hinted that it might be a good idea for those with comorbidities like diabetes and obesity since those patients are suffering most in our hospitals right now (when vaccinated and hospitalized).
I am pretty sure my employer is sticking to Pfizer.
I would not personally get JnJ because of the clotting issues so i wonder if that is why your doctor recommended that (and is the main reason I quoted you...) Anyone who smokes, is prone to clotting, or is on hormonal bcp is recommended by my hospital scientific committee to get the mRNA vaccines, not JnJ.

So you're saying you're going to be "tripleshot"? 😋

Haha haha!! 🤣 The original reason for that name was espresso shots in my normal SB drink order, but this may work too.
I talked to my doctor about this today. She said that while I do fall into the category of getting the third shot and she recommends that I do, she'd like me to hold off for a couple weeks. She is hoping more guidance comes out or a more detailed timeline on a newer booster that would deal with variants better than the current vaccine. I'm still working from home and have started masking up in public again so I'll revisit her advice in a few weeks.
