The wildfire smoke here comes and goes in varying degrees as they fight the fire 40 miles from my city. They said we get to deal with this until the end of Sept as they do a controlled containment. The fire started by lightening August 3rd. So roughly 2 months of smoke when this is all said & done. This is my hometown. We never had giant wildfires that raged for weeks on end and/or made the air quality hazardous when I was growing up. They starting get really bad about 6 or so years ago. But climate change isn't real.
My 12 y.o. is purposefully trying to get dress coded today (along with several of their friends apparently). I tried to have a talk with them about the amount of "activism capital" one has, and is this where they want to use it and was accused of being unsupportive and trying to talk them out of it. Really I just wanted to make sure this is the hill they wanted to die on and to think about the cost to them and their future 'battles' - the dress codes are stupid and sexist.
It's the 2nd week of school.
What are they protesting? The dress code itself? If so, I fully support.
Yes.
And I fully support it too, told them all of my thoughts about it, which aligned with theirs and probably surprised them a bit about how against dress codes I am - I just know that there are a lot of things they want to protest/change so wanted them to think about where to focus their efforts. One can't fight everything.

This made me think of a tweet I read last night, it was essentially - let's not normalize this and call it "fire season" like spring, winter, summer and fall. Fire season is not natural - it's climate change!
Being born and raised in Northern California this is a relatively new thing here too and it's so sad. And only going to get worse.
I got the pumpkin cream cold brew this morning at Starbucks and really liked it. I'm not a big pumpkin person but it was pretty delicious! Looking forward to a fun weekend..DS football, going out with friends tomorrow night and brunch on Sun for a friends birthday!

I don’t know if this is a random or a confession but since we don’t seem to do those confession threads anymore, here goes. I bought a crazy expensive litter box a week ago and honestly it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made. I hung onto the (gigantic) box it came in in case I change my mind and decide to return it (you can return it up to 18 months if you don’t like it). I did not get the highest end one as I didn’t get all the accessories or the wifi feature (bc yes, this litter box has wifi) but I’ve already decided I’m going to ask my kids for some accessories and the wifi upgrade for Christmas.
Now I don’t know what to do with my other, expensive but not nearly as expensive litter box that I’ve hated since Day one. It’s too good to throw out but it’s disgusting and i’d have to scrub it to make it donate-worthy. Like I say, I hate it but if anyone in NOVA is interested in a Petsafe Scoopfree litterbox for free I’m happy to give it to you and you can clean it!
DS2 planted a zinnia maybe 6 months ago. Named him “Steve” would show Steve time lapse videos of plants growing to “encourage him”. Was obsessed over Steve.
We were gone the last two weeks and just discovered Steve died Not sure what happened - we had house sitters watering everything and all other plants are fine. DS2 just sobbed for about 30 minutes over this plant. I’m so sad for him!
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham

I have been thinking of getting one for a long time. You just sold me on it. I can't wait to get it now!

an exceptionally worthy cause and one they might actually be able to influence (they have no little control over other things). Go, kids!
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I bought several nectarines 3 days ago from the grocery store. They were rock hard and cold like they had been frozen until put out, so I put them in my fruit bowl to soften for a few days. I noticed a bunch of fruit flies this morning, so I checked the fruit bowl, and yep, 2 of the nectarines on the bottom were totally rotten and covered in fruit flies. Yay.

They've gotten through 1 period so far (block scheduling so only 3 classes today) with no issues. I'm curious if they'll even get dress coded. It's a new school for them, literally 2nd week. Perhaps things aren't as enforced as they seem to be in the handbook? We shall see, ha.
I found a eyeglass place with good reviews and drove out there this morning. They were 100% better than the woman in my doctor’s office (not that would be difficult) and I found some glasses that worked. I couldn’t decide between two colors of the same frame and they immediately offered to order both and let me chose when they come in. Yay! Fingers crossed they work. It was a relief to find something.
I reserved tickets to go to the beach this weekend so hopefully that will happen. It’s a fun little beach on the bay that’s not too crowded. I miss the beach!
Oh, if you were told to STOP taking medicine today would you think you should take it today and then not tomorrow or is today the first day you don’t take it?
I think it could go either way. The doctor is not in and the receptionist doesn’t seem to understand the question. My dad has a minor procedure on Monday he has to go off his medication for and “stop on Friday” and “go off it 2 or 3 days before” isn’t super clear IMO.
gretchenindisguise , I'm curious what they're wearing to protest. Short shorts? Spaghetti straps? Shirt with a logo or political phrase? I'm not sure what school dress codes prohibit these days.
I think something is living in our bedroom walls. I heard weird sounds 2 days in a row (during the day) and this morning I noticed some dust/dirt on the baseboard in that area. I hope it’s something easy to deal with. Ugh.
Every year I look at Modcloth's Halloween stuff - it's so cute! But I never buy either, mostly because I don't want to spend the money on something I'm only going to wear a couple of times a year.
I think I'm really supposed to be a mom/kindergarten teacher. I love all the cheesy holiday clothing, but since I am neither I feel like it would be weird for me to wear 99% of it.

Shorts that are shorter than mid thigh and a shirt that may have shown their mid-rift if they were taller and their shorts were lower and has too big of arm holes so you can see their sports bra (but may not be able to tell it's a sports bra and not a tank).

They're actually fairly conservative in how they dress and what they are comfortable wearing, so that was part of my confusion that this was what they chose to put their energy behind.

Well, I am with them in solidarity! Sounds like a cute outfit too, lol.

I was sneezing a lot yesterday and I woke up this morning with a sore throat and sinus congestion. My throat feels better (just a tad scratchy) now that I've been up a few hours and have had something to drink, but my head still feels full and I have a slight headache. The pollen count is pretty low so I don't think it's allergies, but the weather has also had a major shift so it could be that. Other than zoom book club tomorrow, I don't have anywhere to be, so I'm going to give it another day before I seek out a covid test (or I might use the other rapid home test from the kit we bought for my H). I'm so over this pandemic.

We were given some cloth diapers, which I've wanted to try, and I've spent HOURS over the past week in this city diapering FB group understanding exactly how to wash them - what detergent, wash cycle, water softener, quantity of water, etc. I swear I followed every instruction to the letter, and two hot water cycles later (as indicated) I'm pretty sure my entire washing machine now smells like pee.
MixedBerryJam, we have a litter robot. My H bought it years ago to make his life easier and loves it. I however I refuse to deal with it because the bathroom where we keep it isn't perfectly level so it's kind of finicky AF and if it's not perfectly balanced it will get stuck mid-cycle. The most I will do is hit the reset button if it's flashing a code.
When we first got it one of our cats was fascinated by it and figured out she could just pop her head in to trigger the cat sensor and then she wait and watch it run. It was running constantly the first couple of weeks because of her. LOL!

We just received an email from the school system with an option to enroll DD in the "Test and Stay Program" where if a child becomes symptomatic while in school or has an in-classroom exposure, they will test the child in school and allow them to stay as long as tests remain negative. Looks like they will be using the Abbot rapid tests for that and will test them for 7 days following an exposure. I signed her right up. Along with the mask mandate, I hope this will really help to reduce the number of days out of school! But also hope it doesn't encourage parents to send a kid to school already sick, figuring they'll just test them there and send home if positive.
MixedBerryJam I'm pretty damn jealous of that cat litter box. I wonder how it would stand up to our two 18 pounders whose "cakes" are a LOT bigger than what that video shows. It really might be worth it for us to try it, although I'd have to change the tray twice a week according to the 2-cat instructions. Probably more since they seem to piss out about a half gallon each time they go! Friggin monster cats!
I have been thinking of getting one for a long time. You just sold me on it. I can't wait to get it now!
My advice is to get the (And I cannot believe I am saying this) wifi and at least the steps. Climbing in seems okay but when they jump out it’s a bit jump down. I have a flat box of the right size at the moment that cuts the jump in half. Also I don’t think you need their special litter. The storage box for waste is too big for plastic grocery store bags but I’m sure I can find cheaper than theirs FYI. I went from Sunday to Thursday without emptying the box (two cats). It was def full but not a whiff of odor. I’ll prob empty the box 2-3x/week going forward and only left it so long this time too see how bad it could get. It’s really quite amazing.
