I get the waiting/ball of nerves, DH does emergency response/damage control for the Navy and his office was very involved after Katrina, Harvey, etc. He'll almost certainly end up down there, it's just a question of when. Thinking of everyone in Ida's path today.
Also waiting on a call to pick DS up at school- he is so congested from allergies that I don't know that he can reasonably keep a mask on all day (negative COVID test yesterday, no fever, and ragweed pollen is super high here right now).
I need to clean my house today. I put it off all weekend. Like mop the floors and everything. I found a pair of bootcut jeans in my drawer from the last time they were popular. I don’t think they’re any different than bootcut jeans right now even though I feel like when styles come back they usually change a little bit.
First day of school! My kids were supposed to be at their Dad's last night, but DD is starting High School today and wanted to be here with me. Her Dad was pissed. Oh well dude. Don't be an ass and alienate your kid and she might want to spend time with you.
I got an anti-aging facial done yesterday and the aesthetician commented on how dry my skin is, so I did buy a new moisturizer that will hopefully help.
Me and my siblings are getting together tonight to discuss my Dad's diagnosis and our plans going forward. My youngest sister lives with him, but he's 45 minutes from my brothers and an hour and a half from me, so we need to find a way for everyone to help so that it all doesn't fall on my sister. Ugh. I'm so stressed.

I bought a shelf for our bathroom. H decided now would be a good time to paint and do some minor upgrades. We painstakingly picked a color and started painting. Yeah, 3 coats of primer paint later and we can still see the previous color. We were okay with the color on coat 3. Then we went to put the shelf together.... it’s missing parts. H is cussing about how we painted for nothing. Okay, whatever. We go to rehang the exact same mirror with the exact same hardware and the dam thing pulls out of the wall taking drywall with it. Thank goodness H was standing near by and caught it before it smashed. I was brushing my teeth last night and noticed it put a hole in the adjacent wall where h slammed it to keep it from hitting the sink.
So our $150 bathroom upgrade was a shit show and now we are looking at $250+ in repairs. 🤦🏻♀️ We are hoping our friend can do the drywall work for us

Today is my first day of in person school since Spring 2020. I’m so nervous and excited! Of course I stupidly scheduled a checkup this morning- my blood pressure is totally going to be high Bc of nerves. So I’m listening to calming music and breathing slowly. Will that even help? I dunno.
Our schools haven’t gone back yet and it seems like it is increasingly rare to go back that late. Anyway, I was wondering—are all the schools where they go back in early August air conditioned? Doesn’t that seem bad for the environment/energy use/costs? It seems odd that it becomes a trend to go back during the height of summer heat just when there are so many concerns about the grid.
I remember when I was a kid we had “energy week” in the winter so they could conserve and turn off the heat for a week in the winter. We didn’t have air conditioning (a lot of schools here still don’t) but we went back so late, it wasn’t normally a huge issue.
The only power in the city is from generators. There was ‘catastrophic’ damage to the power stations and something major fell in the river. There is no water pressure:( shit.show. I have a generator that’s been running but what good is power without running water?
Also I washed a load of clothes the day I left and forgot to dry them 😭 what will happen? Do I need to set it all aflame?

I’m just going to laugh because after my son was quarantined last week, his teacher’s child now has covid and she’s home for the week. This year is such a shitshow. Way worse than 2020. I don’t see how Florida doesn’t reach herd immunity because pretty much everyone we know has Covid.

Tons of cell phones not working either.
Many stuck in attacks in the river parishes:(
I think your clothes are goners unless someone gets to them soon. That sounds like a recipe for mold.
I’ve been following the news and it is all awful. The power stuff sounds like it’s going to take a long time to get back to normal. Hopefully they can figure out the water quickly.

Bernadine that's so exciting! Hosting an exchange student is something I've considered before, and ever since you mentioned doing it its been on my mind. I'm really excited to hear how it goes for you!
My best friend is going through a really tough time, and I don't know how to help. I feel pretty useless.

Today is the first day of the semester! It is the first time we've had a full campus since March 2020, which is nuts. I am taking 2 classes myself this semester, and it's going to be strange being back in a classroom. I mean, it was strange when I started school again in January 2020, and I didn't go in person for long - but now I've done 2.5 semesters online so it's going to be odd being in-person. One of my professors taught me an entire semester of class online and I'll be meeting him in-person for the first time. Same with a few of the students that I've shared classes with but never seen face to face.
I hardly have anything on my calendar this week and then I'm off Thursday/Friday, so my Monday morning motivation is feeling kind of low.
I am thinking of those in Louisiana! mofongo, depending on when you can go home, maybe you can just wash a couple of times on hot? I feel like I've left clothing in the washer for several days before and it's been ok. Especially if your washer does a good job of spinning things partly dry - if they are super wet when they come out of the wash, they may be worse.
Jalapeñomel, I do the same thing with LA/Louisiana/Los Angeles.
mofongo, hugs. Are you home? You could maybe try line drying, but with the humidity, I don't know if it would work, but at least they might be "ok" until you can re-wash and dry?
Bernadine - how exciting! I'm glad ya'll were able to get it all worked out.
I feel so bad for LA. I've lived most of my life in hurricane prone areas and have seen some damage, but nothing quite like this. I spent most of yesterday watching the live camera feeds from the youtube link in the CEP thread. We are ready to donate money once recovery groups and get in and assess.
H picked up smart lightbulbs yesterday for our bedside lamps. They both needed new bulbs, and he thought it'd be fun. We folded laundry last night with the bulbs on "party mode" and flashing in time to music. LOL.

Yes our buildings are air conditioned. We need a/c here basically year round.

I am feeling especially annoyed today with my dogs. Also, I want to poop but cannot. That does not help irritability. Good thing I like the taste of prunes.
Thinking of you and your family mofongo! I think you'll just have to wait and see when you get home to those clothes. They may be salvageable with a few washes with baking soda and vinegar. I was able to save some of my coats that had been in a closet that had a leak for awhile before we noticed it.
I had weird dreams last night so I woke up in a weird mood. I feel very unmotivated. I'm bored by my job already. But I like the company and there's good future possibilities so I'm just hanging in there and enjoying the paycheck for now.
H had said he was going to look at the broken treadmill this weekend and he didn't (I already tried to take it apart and couldn't figure it out). I'm very antsy not being able to walk anymore.

Just finished making a run to each of the elementary schools this morning to drop off bundles of bookmarks. My GS Troop finished a water-based journey and their take action project was to help their community conserve water at home. They designed bookmarks with tips on how to save water - stuff like running dishwashers when they are full, reusing drinking water you’re not going to finish to water plants, turning off the water when you’re brushing your teeth - and had 300 printed with their cookie money.
We hiked in 100+ degree temps to stuff local little free libraries with them last week and dropped off a bunch at the public library. I cut them some slack and took care of the school drop offs, lol.
Today is the first day of school for DS (8th grade). Last night I asked him what he was going to wear and he was like, is that something I'm supposed to care about? He literally just pulled a wrinkled tshirt out of the (clean) laundry basket and called it good. LOL.
We are sending DD to private school this year, and I am feeling so unsettled about it. She won't start until next week, but we still don't have her transportation schedule. Then I found out that the teacher I was expecting her to have left, and her new teacher is a first-year teacher. There is nothing really I can do about it, but I'm pretty disappointed. I know everyone has to start somewhere, but we are making financial sacrifices to send her to this school, and a BIG part of the reason was the experience of the teachers. I haven't even mentioned it to anyone because I know there are people who already think that I'm crazy for pulling her, and I don't want to give them any ammunition.
DD herself is extremely nervous. We are going to visit the school again on Thursday, and I'm hoping that calms both of our nerves a little.

I wonder if eventually schools might shift again to avoid going during the absolute peaks. If these areas are having brown outs and the energy companies are adjusting people’s home air conditioning remotely, you’d think a huge drain like schools would be a concern.
We get very hot here (not Texas hot but hot) so most places are air conditioned but a lot of schools are very old and aren’t “updated” yet or can’t be. I was noticing all the children out the other day and overheard one saying they were glad school wasn’t in session yet because it was so hot, and it got me thinking. I have noticed some bigger stores like Target having signs saying they have reduced lighting and air conditioning on really hot days for conservation reasons. I wouldn’t think that would be an option for most schools.
For the first time ever moving has crossed my mind.
I hear you. It’s been SO stressful to live on the gulf coast the last few years. Last year especially was so bad for Louisiana. I think it’s only the food keeping us here at this point. Thinking of you guys.

I went out to lunch on Saturday, by myself. You order at a counter, they give you a number that you set on the table and your food is delivered to your table. While I was waiting, waitstaff came over with a tray of food and asked if I ordered 3 meals. WTF. Why would they ask the fat girl if she ordered 3 meals? Clearly they weren't for my table number. They were for the family sitting behind me. I was so embarrassed and mad.
