Wait, were you able to do this recently? Since they cut out the FFEL loan holders from forgiveness in September?
Maybe I'm misremembering what type of loans I had originally. I just remember gretchenindisguise saying that you could consolidate to move the loan back to federal instead of private, which I did.
I think I recall that we both did it in August while it was still an option after the forgiveness plan was announced. At the end of Sept they announced (retroactively) that that option to consolidate to direct and still be eligible for the forgiveness was closed to FFEL loanholders due to some of the specifics of the legal challenges against the forgiveness so now those borrowers that didn’t consolidate right away don’t have a clear path to forgiveness through the current mechanism.
I mean, if they follow the law - the supreme court should uphold forgiveness.
I also don't think they want to set a precedent that anyone who doesn’t like how tax dollars are being spent can sue and win.
But then it is this court, so who knows.
I don’t trust this court to care about the law, but I agree this is broad precedent that would not be good for anyone and they likely realize that. Also SCOTUS historically loves denying standing as a way to bypass having to make broader rulings so that could help us here.
I assume the stay is mostly logistical - If they allowed the Biden admin to move forward and actually forgive the debt and then are forced to revoke the forgiveness due to their ruling it would be a complete cluster for borrowers and loan servicers not to mention the Department. I assume they just want to ensure that they don’t set up that complex situation when they’re going to give a final ruling in the next 6-7 months. So I’m trying not to read too much into it.
I almost didn’t apply for the PSLF waiver because I thought the student loan forgiveness was a sure thing and I “only” have about 17k left. But 17k would cover a good chunk of daycare x2 for a year, so please forgive it lol….

Submitted my PSLF in July and had to consolidate to Mohela. Was just forgiven for 24k in loans yesterday! Hooray. Thanks for this message board for bringing the awareness I could apply. I have been in local government since 2006 and paying since 2007, before PSLF began. I could not afford the payment when the program started. I had 178 qualifying payments. Happy day for me today. 🎉🎉

Bumping this back up because of clarification in the IDR Waiver. It essentially extends the pslf waiver and ability to consolidate to highest payment until May 1, 2023 with 2 key exceptions: tlf time can not be double counted and you must remain employed at time forgiveness.
Bumping to see if anyone knows how to look into that refund of payments made during the pause that was talked about. It came up when the $10,000 forgiveness was discussed.
Mohela finally processed my application and reviewed the payments to figure out what qualified under TEPSLF and I'm currently 11 payments away without them counting anything from July 2019 forward, because my employer didn't sign using MM-DD-YYYY format, but did M-D-YY instead. So I think once they review that revised employment certification, I'll be forgiven. If I can get back any of my previous payments, I'd love to. If not, oh well, but for now I'm going to be putting that money into savings instead of paying them further.

Did you have direct loans the whole time? If yes, call Mohela on Monday and submit a request for your covid payments to be refunded. They have been severely dragging their heels on this for many people, so you’ll have to stay on top of it.
Get that money back before you are forgiven or they’ll drag even more and say it’s too late. But having the request in and then say monthly calls logged on you checking up on it will help your case if forgiveness does come first.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I'm going to double check the payments they've counted to make sure they haven't done anything weird and then I'll call them. I can't believe they never explained why my verification for my current employer was denied. No shock that any of these loan servicers are terrible.
Payments to resume in October and interest to resume in September. I was assuming they would start again in July, so at least there’s a couple months of wiggle room.
