I’m having trouble putting into words my feelings about regular civilians being given military grade weapons like, on the spot, to fight for their country. Heartbreaking doesn’t cover it.
My right wing brother posted this meme. They’re not the same, moron.
Ukraine created a hotline for Russian families to check on their soldier's status.
Herashchenko pointed out that the hotline will inform Russian families whether their son, brother, father are still alive, taken prisoner, or if they have been injured.
The families will then be able to decide when and how to pick up/transfer the body to their home in the Russian Federation.
If their son, husband, father… has been captured and is now a prisoner-of-war, the families can leave them a short message.

The Israeli press is reporting that something like 3,000 Ukrainian Jews have filed to make Aaliyah (i.e. applying for Israeli citizenship under the Right of Return law.) I’m struggling to put into words why that’s so emotional for me. After the Holocaust, we said “never again,” and I feel some kind of way seeing Jews fleeing an anti-Semitic despot and the Jewish state doing everything they can to speed their entry into the country.

Good god that’s infuriating. This is the literal definition of a “well regulated militia”.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Not surprising, but the media coverage is super racist (insert angry emoji here). More than one journalist has talked about Ukrainians being civilized and Christian unlike Syrians and Afghans.

Yep, I've noticed this too. Social media is the same.

Also I'm pretty sure if we got invaded by another country, it would be the military handling things, not Bubba Jo Jackass and his stockpile of AKs. Ukraine's military is no match for Russia's which is why, ya know, this is a problem.

Yep, and African/Black students and Black permanent residents from Ukraine getting treated shitty at borders like Poland. Horrific.

I was flipping through radio stations and heard an ad from Marjorie Taylor Greene about how our 2nd amendment is the only reason Russia doesn't attack us like they attack Ukraine. Like, really Marge? That's the reason??

I'm having a hard time describing my fear and anxiety of this. My rabbi sent out a heartbreaking email.
If there is a nuclear attack on the US, the CO front range is fucked. Between NORAD and all the missile bunkers in north Eastern CO, plus the air force base in Cheyenne, it would all be targeted. I, in general, don't worry about nuclear attacks because it would be over just as it starts for us.

Yes.
I hear things like "I never thought I'd see something like this in my lifetime" from people who are forgetting a hell of a lot of things that have happened during their lifetime.
I just discovered the reddit board Ukraine War Video Report. There are all sorts of video and reports including Roma taking a Russian tank, a Georgian tanker telling a Russian ship they will not refuel them and to "get out the oars and row," and Ukrainians sandbagging roads to bog down Russian transports. Also video of a Russian tank convoy turning around after talking to residents of a town that had congregated in the road.
These small victories are giving me hope. This is not what Putin expected at all.
I'm glad I'm not the only one having these types of thoughts..... It's hard not to be really obsessed, distraught, angry, fearful, and basically overwhelmed right now.
I've been refreshing twitter constantly for the past few days. seeing so many images and videos of Ukrainians fighting with everything they have, has been so amazing but I'm terrified of there being a catastrophic turn of events. I'm hoping all the nations that have come together to help, have some sort of plan if Putin decides to say fuck it and makes good on his nuclear threats.

I feel like that gen-x meme about “is this your first fear of nuclear WWIII, grab a genX friend and have a cold pop tart.” Not toward you all, but.. that thought in general. I grew up in a town that literally designed nuclear weapons. And, all of my friends in college had a “reason my town would be among the first to go” (military base, chemical plant, etc). I vacillate between are we all really the key and it just doesn’t matter, we’re all dead.

Oh I already looked up first targets, and let me assure you that what I mentioned are largely thought as priorities.

Jose Andres is at the Poland/Ukraine border with World Central Kitchen feeding refugees.
Video tweet from Chef Andres, text says "People of the World…Reporting from the Ukraine border! This is one of the places @wckitchen has hot meals. It is below freezing tonight & I am meeting so many refugees, families who are escaping & don’t know what’s next…We will do our best not to let them down! #ChefsForUkraine"
Also, I can't help but think how President Zelensky is such an illustration of how quickly life has changed for the people of Ukraine. Five years ago he was the voice of Paddington and now, this.

Did you say “right, so when America gets attacked by a foreign adversary, you can have a gun.” Like, why is this so difficult to understand?

If anyone ruins Jose Andres I'll be murderous. He personally served some of my friends after a natural disaster. It's over 2 years later, they just got full power, and they're still talking about how much world kitchen meant to them
Eta why would autocorrect think ribs is more likely than ruins? I've eaten ribs literally once in my life. But I often say ruin.

Kid related
There is a report that one of the subs in our school system (teaching 8th grade) was pro Russian and giving kids a lesson on other news sources to check out to get the real story (all propaganda sources). He was telling this to a kid after the kid expressed worry that his family was in Ukraine. Turns out he used to work for Sputnik news. Kind of crazy (this all happened Friday, so I am not sure what the outcome is).

He’s amazing. At my last job he opened up his restaurant for us to have a holiday party and then showed up and spoke to us to tell us the work we are doing is important (we work on @ related meal programs). He is a good man to the core and takes action when others sit back.
