This spectacle is horrific. It's an important job with a lifetime appointment, so an extended stressful interview is expected. However, this is a toxic, racist, and disgusting display by the Republicans, just trying to smear Brown Jackson.
Fortunately I only saw the clip and not Cruz’s questioning. Judge Jackson’s handling of it was masterful and I loved seeing the disappointment on Cruz’s stupid smarmy face when he realized this wasn’t going where he wanted it to go.
Did you also see that earlier in the day he missed his checkin for his flight and had a tantrum at the airport (don’t you know who I am?!?!?!) and police were called?
As dumb as this country is - and especially the GOP supporters - he really thinks people actually KNOW who our various gov't representatives are? I would bet dollars to donuts that MANY people know the NAME Ted Cruz but wouldn't be able to pick him out of a line-up. And he's actually one of the more televised people too.

We have a room full of old white men who can't handle the fact that this young black woman is SO MANY TIMES OVER smarter than they are.
I applaud her and her ability to keep her words measured in the face of these assholes! I don't know that I could do it.

It is such bullshit that she is required to not show a twitch of emotion, lest she be considered an angry black woman but: Fucking Kavanaugh threw a giant temper tantrum. Coney-Barret was treated like a delicate flower by Republicans in their questioning.

Yup!! On all points. It's angering and I wish more people were angered by this.
Graham kept trying to make a point about how Kavanaugh and Barret were treated by the press. So the fuck what? They were handled with kid gloves by you lot! And that's also NOT Brown Jackson's problem or concern!!!!
And the GOP just KOKOing. They aren't held accountable for their horrible, hypocritical actions because unfortunately our country is filled with people who LOVE this, who LOVE their behavior.
The GOP senators are just trying to get soundbites of them "owning the libs" that can play on FoxNews. These aren't good faith questions (I mean, obviously) and the answers don't matter to them. But Judge Jackson is doing an amazing job of keeping her cool.

Well, maybe in DC.
Good point. I'm in Baltimore and we see a fair amount of DC news.
Which is more to my point - he has a lot more faith that people actually know who he is and what he looks like than is probably true.

He was in Montana, though lol And even if they knew, Montanans don't give a fuck who you are anyway.

He was in Montana - trying to get back for the hearing - he kissed the window for his check in to the return flight to DC.

Have you all seen this photo? So powerful. The photographer is Sarahbeth Maney, a 2019 college graduate and the first black photography fellow at the NY Times. Check out her twitter feed for a few more photos from her coverage.

That is such an amazingly powerful picture. Thank you for sharing.
OMG please look up Senator Whitehouse's questions that he just asked. <3
ETA: Senator Whitehouse asked the Alabama Attorney General about January 6 including asking repeatedly if Biden was the DULY ELECTED and LAWFULLY SERVING President of the United States and he would only agree that Biden was the President.
OMG I just listened to an extended clip of Ted Cruz’s exchange. Wow, he is such a pedantic grandstanding (and racist) asshole. Can’t even imagine how hard it was to keep her cool and not fall for his gotcha questions.

Only recognizable because he’s a greasy troll who makes my skin crawl.

Sasse, a member of the Judiciary Committee, pointed to Jackson not clearly labeling her judicial philosophy in his decision to vote "no" on her confirmation.
"Judge Jackson is an extraordinary person with an extraordinary American story. We both love this country, but we disagree on judicial philosophy and I am sadly unable to vote for this confirmation," Sasse said in a statement.
Judge Jackson has impeccable credentials and a deep knowledge of the law, but at every turn this week she not only refused to claim originalism as her judicial philosophy, she refused to claim any judicial philosophy at all," he added.

I mean, she actually did answer explain her judicial philosophy really well, he's just too dumb to recognize it when it wasn't in response to the question "what is your judicial philosophy."
Sasse is such an asshole. He's had a few moments where he seemed like he could be decent, at least for a Republican, but he's shown his true colors enough that he's just another garbage Conservative.

Susan Collins is a yes, which nice to have at least 1 GOP vote. Maybe some others will too. How long will Bryer stay/when does she get a vote and sworn in?
Only three Republican senators voted in favor of Jackson in 2021 when the Senate confirmed her to fill a vacancy on a powerful DC-based appellate court: Collins as well as Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Murkowski and Graham have not yet said where they stand on Jackson's nomination. Graham told CNN he plans to announce his position on Jackson sometime this week. GOP Sen. Mitt Romney also met with Jackson on Tuesday, but has not yet said whether he'll support her after expressing an openness to vote in favor of her nomination to the Supreme Court.

neverfstop Breyer's stepping down at the end of the term, which doesn't have a specific date but is usually late June. Then the Court is in recess until early October.

@@@
I assigned my affinity group to find clips of the hearing that showed racist and misogynistic undertones (overtones!). Almost every group picked the Cruz section and just tore him apart. He is such a dick.
