Boris Johnson has been fined for breaking his own Covid laws by attending a party for his birthday in No 10, but he has vowed to fight on as prime minister in defiance of furious calls for him to quit…. ……Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish first minister and SNP leader, also called for the prime minister to quit. “Boris Johnson must resign,” she said. “He broke the law and repeatedly lied to parliament about it. The basic values of integrity and decency – essential to the proper working of any parliamentary democracy – demand that he go. And he should take his out of touch chancellor with him.”
Jeez, no shame at all. Just like a certain ex-president.
I've been thinking about midterms lately. One of our R senators is up for re-election, and we have (as far as I know, only) one viable D candidate running against him. I've been thinking it might be nice to have a sticky thread where, for example, I could post this candidate's website so that posters who might not otherwise be donating this year - because they're in a solidly blue state, or don't have a senator up for re-election this cycle, for example - could donate to his campaign. Would this be okay? On the one hand I realize it could be too early to do something like this since primaries aren't until, what, June or August. But on the other hand, in places like Kansas which hasn't seen a D senator in like 80 years, the D candidate reeeaaally needs all the help he can get. And I'm thinking in addition to funding - if you don't live in Kansas but have social media friends who do, you could post about the candidate so that they're aware.

What is going on with Florida (I know, I know). Rejecting *math* books over "crt" in dick quotes because obviously it's a misnomer for whatever boogey man they're claiming. They claim indoctrination. Of course there's no citation provided.
Lol to this quote: State House Member Anna Eskamani said, "I get it. The goal of math is to solve problems which the Republican Party of Florida doesn't like to do."

A list of the textbooks obtained by CNN shows that eight different publishers had submissions rejected for referencing critical race theory, social-emotional learning and other special topics. The list did not provide further details about each title or examples of the textbook passages.

The tape of Kevin McCarthy and Liz Cheney talking about the 25th amendment on 1/10/2021 is... wow. He denied it existed before it was released. Rachel Maddow just played it. None of the outlets have updated reporting yet.

From what I can gather, they’re taking issue with things like the sentences/paragraphs they use for word problems. Apparently we can only talk about Sally and Bob going to the grocery store and buying 3 watermelons and 2 bananas.
Forget the research that shows that dynamic learning, where kids are learning about different subjects interwoven, has a positive effect on learning. Social studies being rolled into Math is a great thing…especially since the curriculums are changing so much and making it harder to fit things like social studies into the schedules.

I read an article that said it also rejected textbooks with “common core” curriculum.

Update on our gov't:
1. Things are starting to heat up for Johnson - the fact that he lied and broke the law is going to the Common's Privilege Committee
2. Probably due to the fact that the public is really starting to speak out about this and we have local elections coming up, some Conservatives are now starting to speak out (from me - too little, too late!).
3. Priti Patel has gone against civil service and has signed with Rwanda to ship asylum seekers there - if they get asylum, they don't get to come to the UK, they have to remain in Rwanda. Yes, this is illegal and immoral and basically she is setting up internment camps which will also cost UK taxpayers more than actually allowing them to remain in the UK.
OMG, I just spotted a former colleague in the audience of the MTG hearing and he's clearly on the wrong side sitting with the MAGAT who got scolded by the judge for applauding.

Well, now we know why Maddison Cawthorn was running his mouth about fellow GOP people offering him coke & orgies.... ETA: he claims it was for a cruise game, but I still find it really funny
Photographs obtained by POLITICO appear to show Madison Cawthorn, the embattled Republican congressman from North Carolina who recently accused his GOP colleagues of inviting him to orgies, wearing lingerie in what appears to be a party setting.
Cawthorn, 26, was raised in a conservative Baptist community in Henderson County, North Carolina, and has staked his political persona on arch-traditional Christian principles and the insistence of the importance of a kind of hypermasculinity. His comments about “the sexual perversion” in Washington made on a podcast, which he later admitted were exaggerated, drew the public disapproval and disavowal of Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as well as other Republican leaders including those in his North Carolina congressional caucus
Does anyone know what the purpose of the lady sitting in front of MGT speaking into what looked like an ice cream cone was? Who was she talking to and what was she saying?

I don’t know but I was wondering too!
Glad I’m not alone!! My aunt and I were pondering over it today.

She was the stenographer (I'm guessing, but she was the one that went back and repeated something when requested).

So I always thought stenographers typed things? Is she just repeating the court proceedings into that little microphone/ice cream cone? And if so why can’t whatever is recording it just record it from the actual people?

Thank you - google tells me this is called a “stenomask”

Yes it’s another way to record all that’s been said. It can be easier on the body and faster to speak than type. It also cuts out all background noise which wouldn’t be as possible if just using 1 big mic to record everyone and would make the recording less accurate.
How was this not a bigger story? Alan Bruce, a climate change activist, died after setting himself on fire on the steps of the Supreme Court on Earth Day.

On Friday in DC someone was indiscriminately firing down at people on the sidewalk, sniper-style. He shot four people and killed himself. No one else died, but I only know about it because my cousin lives across the street from his apartment. Also virtually no media.

We’ve totally lost the plot.
I think it was the mixture of yet another mass shooting and this guy seemingly not having anything in particular he was protesting that they've found so far. There have been many self-immolation protests that got international attention because it was an exclamation point on long standing clear protests.
