I just saw this and am wondering if we should get our 8 year old boosted, or wait until fall to see if they come out with the vaccine that will cover more variants that I have read is in the works.

IDK, that was my dilemma when the booster for adults was approved and they still haven't updated the vaccine. So unless I missed something specific about the variant update, I would just go ahead and do it with what is currently available.
ETA I might just be bitter because DS currently has covid so this booster is too little too late for him...

We have air travel planned in mid-June. I'm really hoping I can get her in for a booster before we got. Even if it's not 2 weeks, I'll do what I can.

DD2 has her annual pedi check in two weeks and we are going to ask then, I think, unless we hear more.
Awesome news but where the hell is the under 5 vax!? Holy hell we've been waiting way too long.
FUCK! I saw the "@@@ FDA approves" and totally thought it was for the under 5 crowd. <cries actual tears>
FUCK FUCK FUCK when are they going to approve the vaccine for my 3 year old!!!!!?
Seriously, my area is in a huge, invisible surge that no one cares about (based on covid testing in sewage, it is as high as the delta surge) and my daycare chose THIS WEEK to drop masking after 2+ fucking years! DD2 already had Covid, but I'd like her to be vaxxed before she gets it again for fucks sake!
Boosters seem to be every 5 months, so I figure I will get theirs now, and in 5 months if there is something specifically for Omicron, then I will get it then since it seems like they would possibly approve it 5 months after the booster based on previous history.
I've done everything right away in terms of vaccines, and that strategy seems to have worked out for us.

And also luck. We’ve all followed booster recommendations here but Covid still found us. It happens.
Anyway DD just had Covid two weeks ago. I’m going to hold off for her and will get her booster before school starts in August,

Yes it is also luck. And maybe we did have Covid, but we never popped a positive test. My expectation is for Covid to happen imminently due to the rise in cases which is why I want to get their boosters. People who have had Covid might consider that a "booster" and decide to wait, which makes total sense.

I renamed the thread because I don't want to contribute to everyone's anger/sadness/rage/disappointment Things are surging like crazy here, too.

Things are surging here now and I don't know what the fall holds (yes, there will likely be another surge but who knows what variant and whether it'll match the boosters available?). I'm definitely boosting my eldest who is going to sleep away camp. Youngest probably, too. (if for no other reason than to avoid sibling dynamics).
I absolutely knew my 6 yo would be approved to get a booster before my 2 yo old was approved to get any vaccine at all, but it's insult added to injury for the news to come while my 2yo is home with active covid.

I think we're going to wait till later summer/before school, but not necessarily in hopes of a more variant-specific booster.
DD had covid in April and most of our summer activities are largely indoors so I think her overall risk will be lower until school starts again. I think it makes sense to delay the booster until she's in more high risk situations more regularly.
I may reassess later but I think that's where I am right now.

I was thinking I’d do it right away, but now I’m not sure. My friend’s primary dr was just informally talking with her last month and said that she was going to hold off on her own 9yo child’s booster until closer to school starting given the not super great efficacy of the shot. But that was before the surge and they only had domestic non-flying destinations planned and limited camps that were mostly outdoors. We’re kind of in the same situation so that does make sense, but I’ll probably get it done anyway.

Thank you, but my rage is definitely not directed at you!! I appreciate the news, as usual I saw it here first.
I follow a woman on instagram (not a kid but in her early 20s) who had covid the end of March and just tested positive AGAIN. She knows she tested negative in between on a PCR test so it's not the same infection as March. It seems like the variants might be different enough that a previous infection wont provide as much immunity as it did. But that also makes me question the efficacy of getting a booster. I'll still have my DDs get one before we travel this summer but I don't have high hopes for avoiding a summer infection.

If boosters are every 5 months, where the hell are the second booster for healthy adults? Why are they talking like maybe they won't even happen? I definitely WANT to get my kid boosted now AND in the fall, but I really don't think that's going to be an option. I'm having another baby in December, so this is very on my mind. And the more I read, the more I'm leaning toward boosting later, since I just don't believe both will be an option. I HATE that this is where we are at, but I just have no trust left.
sillygoosegirl, well that is if they develop something Omicron related which we've been waiting for a while, and nothing yet.
For adult healthy people, I am going with the assumption that we are good until which time they say, nope you are not good, and you all need another booster. I get massive side effects, so I am in no hurry until they say OK you need to do this.

Around here the variant sequencing data show a shift from Omicron B.1.1.529/BA.1 to BA.2 during late March.

I am curious too.
My boys and I had covid two weeks ago. Both are now eligible for a booster but I'm thinking I may wait until the fall, or at least August right before we go on vacation.

Now that we know you can basically get covid as often as every 90ish days, and that boosters don't significantly reduce infection rates, and that new variants will happen...I really hate all of this calculus we have to do to figure out the right timing.
And I kinda feel like an antivaxxer thinking about all of this but...like, at what point do we just say "Ya know, I've had four doses already and if my goal is to avoid the hospital and death, I've accomplished that. And if we don't know what variants will arise, how do we know the current boosters will be helpful?" I just feel like we are going to be eternally chasing the newest variant with an appropriate booster, way more often than we have to do with the flu each year.

Congress doesn't want to pay for boosters for everyone in the fall. Maybe those of us with insurance will be able to get them that way in the fall. But I haven't seen anything about plans to make them available that way either.

Talk me down.
Sorry. Can’t talk you down. I can only tell you you’re not alone in this. I believe at some point, this is going to end up being treated like the flu. We’re not there yet…but I don’t know who to even trust anymore to know when that will be.
I don’t know what we’re going to do. I’m guessing it’s like all of the others where it takes time to take effect. I want one in effect NOW. I’m so worried my kids are going to get it now, and then miss every bit of the fun stuff at the end of school (they have 8 days left) and sports. I know what’s happening around here is that people just aren’t testing so they don’t end up in that position of missing everything. Which puts those of us who will test at increased risk of again feeling punished for doing the right thing. It’s infuriating…and damnit if it isn’t tempting to consider doing the same thing (I wouldn’t). Then I shudder to think that if that even crosses my mind, I can only imagine that about 80%+ of people here would do just that.
We just had the discussion with the kids last night about going back to wearing masks at school and weighing the pros and cons of that. My 8 year old cried. I cried. There is literally one child who wears a mask in his class (and it’s ALWAYS below his nose).
On top of that, I have a very pregnant family member (who is already high risk) with a 4 year old at home. She tested positive 2 days ago. I’m worried, angry,…all the emotions. (They don’t live local to us, and I feel so helpless.)
