The JD stanning on social media has been awful to behold.
The way the internet at large has turned this into a spectacle like some kind of sporting match is horrifying. At the end of the day, this is about domestic violence and abuse. Whatever the verdict, there are no winners here.
The venom I've seen spewed at Heard honestly makes me worried for her safety. People have whipped themselves into a frenzy over her.
I listened a lot of this trial (I need random background things on during the day and there’s a lawyer YouTuber I like listening to). I’m not surprised by the verdict at all, but the whole thing is gross and terrible. I’m not a better person for having paid as much attention to this as I did. It’s all just bad.
There is a band I love that has this song that I think of whenever I hear about this trial. Every time I hear it, I think “this is about a terribly unhealthy relationship”
You are an uncontrollable, inconsolable woman And I'm a bullheaded ego-maniacal man You want to hit me in the face, wanna put you in your place Hate each other sometimes Gotta feeling we'll be fighting for the rest of our lives
The JD stanning on social media has been awful to behold.
Why do you say that?
So when it first happened I believed Amber. I believed the claims she made, I saw the possibility that J. Depp was capable of this and it crushed me because I loved POTC. I remember there being a lot of rumours that went back to his relationship with Wynona Ryder, I remembered thinking how it's very possible that just because he never hit Wynona doesn't mean he won't hit Amber because it may not be the same type of attraction. All of it just sat with me and I was on her side for a while.
Until I heard the audio.
It was random, I wasn't following it daily kinda just mourned never seeing Captain Jack Sparrow in the same light again and that was that. But then the audio crossed my path and it changed everything. Could J. Depp be capable of things, yes it's possible but not to the extent or claims Heard made. At first with the audio there is still a willing to believe Heard but then somewhere in it, it shifts and you can just hear her. He said in court yesterday it's like she hated him and in the audio which was released a few years ago you can hear that. Her mocking, her shutting down what he's trying to express, her acting like it's no big deal to be hitting him because it's not a punch and she's a woman so get over it you baby. There is even evidence of her telling him to go tell people he's a victim no one will believe him....Innocent people do not say that. So. All of what is said in one audio recording (which granted is a few hours) unravels her entire story.
That's before you look into any new evidence that comes to light afterwards, or how she just has the most deadpan look at J. Depp in the trial for the majority of it. It's the way he expresses himself in the trial like his inner child is being exposed here. The man's nearly 60 and one of the richest actors in the world but on the stand he just seems like the most average person who fell in love and got played heavily for it. One could counter he may be acting but he's all over the place in emotions that it's written on his face, and that aligns with decades worth of interviews. He is also receiving the same treatment most people who suffer domestic violence (that isn't sexual) which is disdain for it, because abuse like that is common throughout the world and so it has been passively accepted when it shouldn't have been. Ever.

Almost like the person with the money and power got to control the narrative. (Just an observation. I have not followed the people generally or the trial specifically.)

Here’s a good Twitter thread that breaks a lot of this down
And another that goes over what the trial is really about—how victims are allowed to communicate about their abuse
I have a lot of FEELINGS about this case. I started watching it closely after hearing Amber Heard had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (my mom has that so I’m intimately familiar). I watched a majority of the trial.
- I think it’s clear there was abuse by both parties. Verbal and physical. She very clearly was an instigator a lot - that doesn’t/shouldn’t matter. He has more power in the relationship due to fame, money, and physicality so that needs to be taken into consideration even when there is “mutual abuse”
- she also clearly lied about some things and was caught in those lies on the stand. She also clearly exaggerated. It really sucks because she didn’t need to. Abuse is abuse, and the fact that she made up more grandiose tales of the abuse either because she felt she had to, or due to her BPD and histrionic personality disorder (assuming those diagnoses are correct) is awful. The law was on her side coming into this - defamation against a public figure is very hard to prove. But her testimony was terrible and really hurt her. When the jury sees you clearly lying on some things they might discount everything, and that’s what they did. If she had stayed with the smaller story/basics she would have won - she had evidence of abuse, just not the abuse she was claiming (if that makes sense)
- they both have some really rotten personality traits. The whole trial was painful. I think the jury did the right thing according to the law but it sucks. The hatred towards her has been gross. I don’t like her and think she lied about a lot but that shouldn’t diminish the real abuse that happened between them
- his lawyers were WAY better. Money makes a difference in our justice system

Your thoughts on him saying things like “hopefully that cunt is dead in the fucking trunk of a Honda Civic”?

I watched not a second of this trial but the issue at stake is not whether or not Heard is a an abuser, uncharismatic, a bad witness, a bitch, or whatever else. The questions is whether or not she lied about being a survivor of domestic violence and in doing so libeled Johnny Depp. Even if she hit back, hit first, had a foul mouth, whatever that doesn’t preclude her from being a survivor of domestic violence.
I avoided the trial as much as I could because everything I saw was so dark. It was like time travel back to a pre #metoo world. Also, we are living in peak tv, can people please find something else to entertain them besides the everyday tragedies of real people? I know AH and JD are public figures, but did all of this really need to be live-streamed to the world?
Pretty much every woman who has ever been with Depp says that he was abusive. I have no trouble believing that he abused her.
I didn’t follow the trial, though it seems she may have exaggerated the nature of the abuse, and she almost certainly abused him back. So….I dunno. I wish we could use this as an opportunity for discussion on healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, what abuse can look and feel like, and how to support others experiencing abuse. But instead it turned into a massive he-said-she-said with Team Johnny and Team Amber and people picked sides. I simultaneously pity and dislike both of them.

What I find disturbing is that she didn’t actually name him in her op-ed. Obviously she was famously in a relationship with Depp so one could assume it was him but she didn’t explicitly name him.
Defamation lawsuits are increasingly common in cases of assault against women and it seems like this could set a precedent that will further silence victims.

actually that first part isn’t true - he had long term relationships with Winona Ryder, Kate moss, Jennifer grey, Vanessa paradis, and another wife I can’t recall and they all deny any physical abuse. Obviously he could have been abusive and they just didn’t say anything. He 100% has issues, particularly with drugs and alcohol, and is clearly verbally abusive (as evidenced on tape recordings). Not saying he’s a great person - both parties in this case were clearly toxic.

Abuse doesn’t have to be physical. But you’re right, not *every* woman has come out and said he was abusive. But many have.
I didn’t follow the trial. I just saw random headlines. I ageee they were both abusive but he has more power and money.
More on the legal side why did they side with Amber in the UK trial and JD in the American trial?
from what I understand the UK judge didn’t allow a lot of evidence from Johnny depp because he deemed it untrustworthy due to Depp being on drugs or drinking. That evidence was allowed in the US trial. Also the judge apparently put a lot of weight on the fact that Amber said she donated all her divorce settlement, and it came out in this trial that she hadn’t. Plus, different countries, different lawsuit (it was against a paper, not Amber heard ), different level of proof etc. I think the UK trial was just a judge, no jury?
I know all this because I watched the current trial via a lawYer YouTuber who I follow for other trials. I’m a touch embarrassed I know all this, but it’s been my background noise for dog walking and housework for a while.

I can’t find anything about this, not b/c of this thread, but I had googled a few times since this all started. Have you seen anything?
Ugh, no, you’re right and I’m wrong. I’m sorry. I was totally thinking of Sean Penn and not Johnny Depp. I have no idea why I combined the two of them in my mind. Both Madonna and Robin Wright claimed he abused them.

I’m sad for what this has done to victims of domestic violence, the emboldening of perpetrators and the teenagers who have been watching this via tik tok and are getting such a skewed view of things.
I only watched testimony (the actual videos not the tik tok spliced ones) and his expert witness was leaps and bounds above hers. Hers was just bad (the male). And flat out wrong on several things.

They didn’t really “side with Amber”. The UK case was against a tabloid, not Heard. The courts found that the vast majority of the allegations/instances of abuse by Depp of Heard were true so the tabloid was not libeling him by publishing the story.
In this case, which he brought in VA, speculated because because of their burden of proof for libel cases vs CA where they lived was against Heard for publishing a op ed in the Post about a former abusive relationship without naming Depp. He claimed that since they had been in a public relationship, it was clearly about him and since he claims it was untrue, libel.

It does seem like his drug and alcohol problems really escalated in the last few years. The point was made repeatedly that he would black out frequently and not remember what he did.
I’d also want to point out that because he may not have physically abused someone 20-30+ years ago doesn’t mean it’s not an issue in his more recent relationship(s).
These two seem to be a particularly volatile combination. The dynamic in his earlier relationships might have been different; Heard is clearly prone to confrontation and “fighting back”. Perhaps this was not the case with these other women. It is not uncommon for abusers to have great relationships with many people and abuse just one person or a select few. That’s how many abusers get away with it for years. Or for verbal or physical abuse to escalate when there is a lot of substance abuse present.

He’s weaponized the court system and now his buddies like Marilyn Manson are going to do the same thing to their victims. Really scary time for DV victims. Fuck that guy, the judge and the jury and every single person who thinks that ‘Amber turd’ is the height of comedy and is using this moment as a way to gain followers.

There’s a zero percent chance that the jurors avoided all coverage if they went on any social media. I have serious problems with this judge allowing this three live streamed just like I have serious problems about any of the courts in this country allowing court proceedings to be streamed on YouTube for so-called public access.

I think he saw an opening to try to destroy her and took it. And was successful.

I didn't follow the trial beyond being unable to avoid the headlines but I agree this outcome will have a chilling effect on victims of domestic abuse and will perpetuate power imbalances.

From the audio, Johnny was a victim of DV on several different instances.
