One of my regular news podcasts talked about this yesterday and said that one of the reasons the monarchy is still celebrated in the UK is because Queen Elizabeth is so personally popular. They suggested it would be in more trouble if Charles takes over after she dies. But I guess we'll never know what people would think of him ruling for 70 years. It's really amazing to think how long she has been queen!
Huh. I find the projecting her picture on stonehenge vaguely offensive. Like, we don't know exactly what it was used for (right, that's still true isn't it?), but it was *probably* religious in nature to some extent. I feel like the idea of some far future society placing images of their ruler on the ruins of st peter's basilica would be upsetting to catholics, no? I might be overthinking that, but it's making my nose wrinkle beyond the general "ok, but why?" (wrote the above, then actually read the article...apparently was not alone in this assessment)
Also, now having seen the pics, it also just looks cheesy AF.

I know the monarchy as an institution is problematic, but I can see why she is personally popular. And yes, it is amazing to think of all the things she has been Queen for and how much change she has presided over.

Oh the monarchy is screwed when Chuck takes the reigns and countries start dropping like flies. No doubt about that!

reins. Reins are used to steer horses. You rein something in, or take the reins. They're both riding/driving metaphors.
I do find it fascinating that countries are gearing up to just drop out of the whole shebang. How does that work? like...do they have to ask permission? Or just say they're doing it knowing full well that in this year 2022 it's not like a warship is goign to show up to tell them otherwise.

Take the Reign actually kinda works in this situation
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
I loved her jubilee in 2012! Everyone in the UK got the day off! I think the weirdest thing for me when she finally goes is that our money will look different.

I'm not celebrating other than being happy to have two days off. There's a lot of anger due to how horrible things are going in this country and it feels very myopic to be spending so much money on all of this when it could go to better things (like food banks, which are the most used ever at this time). There are still Royal supporters and I can get why they are into the Queen. I don't think any other Royal will have the same support, especially after saying nothing about the current gov't and their attacks on anyone who doesn't fit their mold (see Meghan).

Fun Canadian money fact! Queen Elizabeth has been on the Canadian $20 bill every year since 1935 (except for 1937). Even when she was an 8 year old who wasn't next in line to the throne, Canada was like, "slap that kid on the money."
The Queen reminds me of my grandmother (same generation, although my grandmother passed almost 20 years ago) and I assume I'm not alone in the view that she seems like a sweet and harmless old granny. Plus the vast majority - like VAST majority - of commonwealth citizens have only ever known her as the monarch. Heck, she was queen when my parents were born in 1954/1956.

Unfortunately for us, when our Constitution was written at Independence (1962), the Monarch was included as an entrenched position - which means that removing the Monarchy requires a referendum. Barbados did not have this as an entrenched provision whcih is why they were able to remove the Queen fairly easily recently.
I am curious to see what the monarchy will look like after QEII passes. Charles is full of issues and doesn't have nearly the same popularity as his mother. Will is also problematic and it's only getting worse as he ages i.e. this grotesque tour in the Caribbean. I really hope most countries leave the commonwealth after QEII dies. Canada and Australia/NZ probably never will but it's not that important.

I remember reading an article a while back (it might have been posted by one of y'all for all I know) about everything that will have to be rebranded after the Queen passes, and what a huge expense that will be and how Charles should abdicate to save taxpayers the cost of doing it all again after his short reign. Between Charles being an ass and Andrew being a POS, the monarchy will definitely not be popular without Her Majesty.
How, specificially, is Charles problematic? I understand a lot of it is due to Diana, but is there something more? I think this perception pre-dates Megan.
I do think he's dumb as a box of rocks...my favorite was when he said he would never eat anything with DNA.

He's not, particularly, he's just not loved. He's boring and old and no one particularly likes him. If it skipped a generation, you might at least get some youngish people excited about the monarchy (right now it's mainly the middle aged and pensioners who are all about the Queen, here).

That's fascinating. Is William more well-liked than Charles? I feel like Kate is well liked, but not sure about William. But I'm curious how the fallout from what happened with Meghan and Harry affected that.
It was so interesting on the news last night, they referred to Harry and Meghan as "Duchess Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry". I thought it was fascinating that she got first billing! Usually it is the other way around.
Kate recycled an Alexander McQueen coat dress and wore diamond and sapphire earrings that belonged to Diana.
I find it unsettling how much the connection to Diana is emphasized (tiara, jewelry, clothing similarities) it's very Rebecca, the first Mrs. deWinter to me.

I can never tell if Kate and Meghan make intentional fashion choices to mirror something that Diana wore, or if it’s more that they all wear really classics styles and eventually at a bunch of similar events (horse races, movie premiers, etc) they are going to end up wearing very similar styles. Also, they both own several pieces of jewelry that used to belong to Diana, and it seems strange to point that out every time they wear one…

William and Kate haven't had bad press or scandals like Charles has. I get the impression people don't really care for Camilla either. The bigger issue is that Charles is 73, so he would only reign for ~20 years max.

Right. It's not the wearing itself (my mom owns a ton of jewelry that belonged to her mother and grandmother). They attend plenty of events where diamond or pearl earrings and whatever are appropriate. It's the pointing it out! In the article I saw, they pointed out where the earrings came from, but not the necklace, which coordinated well with the earrings, but was not the same necklace Diana was wearing in the REFERENCE PHOTO that was also posted. Unless they're going to mention the province of every item of jewelry, it seems like overkill and more evidence that everyone is living in the past.

The affair is what he is most criticized for, but he’s also racist (told an English person of Indian descent that she didn’t look British a few years ago, other incidents like that) and a hypocrite. For example, he was accepting an environmental award and had a lot of good press for riding the train to accept it. Except it came out that he flew a private plane there and then just rode the train for the last couple miles.
