I'm so sorry to everyone dealing with new cases and social gathering and travel cancellations because of this stupid virus.
timorousbeastie's post reminded me that I'm still the only one I know who recently had covid and lost taste and smell. So of course I had to be one of those rare people who lost taste and smell with omicron, because that's just my luck. They were gone for a week, which felt like an eternity and was horrible so I truly cannot imagine being in the shoes of people who got covid early on and lost taste/smell for weeks or months.

DH never tested positive for covid in July despite having symptoms and testing himself every single day for like 8 days so we assumed it was likely the flu, not covid.
However, he lost his sense of taste & smell and it's only kind of back.
He loses his sense of taste & smell for every respiratory illness he gets so it's not necessarily a sign he had covid vs. something else but previously it's always come back after he's feeling better.

When we had Covid back in May everyone in my house lost sense of smell and sense of taste to varying degrees. For me I couldn't smell and my sense of taste was just very muted. DD was pretty much the same. DH lost both completely but in all cases it only lasted a day or two and we were all feeling basically 100% by that point. It's the strangest virus ever.
COVID is back in our house exactly three months after the last time. My little one has it worse than last time even though he has had half the vaccine. He was due to get the other half last week and we forgot his vax card so we rescheduled for…tomorrow. Whomp whomp.

I was hoping to get my kids the new booster but their three months are up this week after having Covid over the summer so I went ahead and took them today for the old one. We’re going to Universal Studios in a couple weeks so seems prudent to have some extra protection beforehand.
I got my updated booster at the same time! Previous shots have left me ill for days, I’m hoping since I had Covid over the summer too (presumably Omicron but of course I don’t know for sure) maybe my body won’t react as strongly to the new shot.

DS(2) is fully recovered from his round of Omicron and none of us got it from him despite DH and I not masking around him since we figured we were already fully exposed at that point. Our last round of vaccines was in January. I’m attributing our shocking success to the fact that DS had one vaccine shot in August and really only had GI symptoms, so he wasn’t coughing all over the place. Both the rapid test results we got were very faint, so I just don’t think it had a strong presence in his sinuses to spread.
At the same time, DH and I were suffering with a wicked head cold he picked up from a guys weekend from the week before. I think our vicious head cold outcompeted Omicron. I was sick with this bullshit for 9 days. Both of us took a pile of CoVID tests and never tested positive. So there you go, anecdotal proof that if you’re sick with something else, you are unlikely to also get CoVID.
I finally tested negative on a rapid on day 10. Still a lot of lingering symptoms but I feel human again. DD and DH didn't get sick but we were vigilant about masking. Got DD her booster yesterday (I got my flu shot, will wait a month or so for the booster).
We've started getting the covid + emails from school (2nd full week in). They've reiterated that if you have covid + family members but you aren't sick that you should wear a mask in school. This is an urban, Title 1, 86% minority magnet school and they've always been very cognizant of having a vulnerable population with many multigenerational households.
I just got my flu shot + Moderna bivalent booster together yesterday. I was prepared for it to be awful, and I'm glad I have a down day today, but it's not as bad as other covid shots have been for me. Lots of muscle aches and headache, and a highest temp of 99.7, but much better than the 102 that I had after the 2nd dose of my primary Moderna series.
Kids have flu shots on Friday afternoon. My 6 yo will be tough, but my 3yo will not be fun. Ice cream to follow for sure, I am not at all above bribes.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

It finally found us. Up till last week, we were Covid virgins, but it finally got us.
My 14 year old tested positive 9 days ago, and now my 11 year old has a nasty stuffy nose, headache, and just spiked a fever. She tested negative yesterday and today (2 different brands of tests) but I'm getting her a PCR tomorrow to be sure. 14yo was fully isolated in her room for 5 days, only came out on day 6 with a a mask, and I was WAY more exposed than 11 YO and have been asymptomatic and negative tested, so who knows what's going on.
Thankfully symptoms passed quickly for 14 year old, and by day 4 she was climbing the walls with boredom, and told me she had reached the end of Netflix and the entire internet streaming content, lol. What was wild to me was that her school cleared her to go back on day 6, masked. It was her class retreat (a camping trip), and she was allowed to go for the main 12 hour day, as it was mostly outside anyways. She wasn't allowed to spend the night, so I dropped her off and picked her up, but she'll be back to school tomorrow, just with a mask. Then I guess she's done masking if she wants to be. This is per their health policy, and it was under the advisement of the infectious disease chair of a major hospital system here, so....ok I guess? Just feels crazy, and I'm trying to feel reassured that this means we're making progress, but I can't quite get there.
Healing thoughts to everyone else dealing with it. It sucks.

DD (7) had her first booster (3rd shot) on Saturday and she complained once about a sore arm this morning. I would call that a success. The first booster only opened up to her she cohort two weeks ago and this was the soonest we could get her an appointment at a nearby clinic. She was dramatic about the shot. I swear it would be easier if we could do vaccines with sedation. Omg. Or with laughing gas. That would be ideal.
DS (4YO) has spiked 104-degree fevers every night for the last three. I hate this for him. It is worse than his Covid bout in June, and I thought it would be better since he’s had half the vaccine dose. I feel so terrible for him.
I also feel like I need charts to know when to get our next shots.
DS1 (7) had his first two as soon as he was eligible and his booster in early August since we had Covid in June. Should I get him the new booster already?
DS2 (4) had the first half of Moderna in mid-August and was supposed to get his second dose last week. We forgot his vax card and rescheduled to yesterday. That obviously didn’t work. Get the vax as soon as Covid is gone or wait?
DH and I each have three shots and were going to get the new booster now. I have been so very exposed to Covid. (DS2 vomited on me and slept in my arms all night, breathing in my face). Should I still get it now or make sure I don’t have Covid first by waiting a few days?
krystee the new booster is only for 12+ so your 7yo is up to date. I think you could get yours now but I personally would wait and see if you caught it. I would also give the 4yo a month or so, but according to the CDC he can get it as soon as he's better.

Have we heard anything about when updated boosters will be available for 5-11 ages? My kids are 10 and we are going on a cruise and leaving beginning of November. I wanted them boosted before the trip and was trying to hold out until the new one became available, but I'm not sure if it'll happen time for them to get the shot and the immunity to kick in...

It’s still unclear. Both sponsors have said they intend to submit for EUA for 5-11 and 6-18, respectively, this fall. Moderna anticipated data for this age group would be ready end of September, Pfizer said mid-Oct. I haven't seen updates from either sponsor since last month so I’m not sure if this is still on track or what will happen with the approvals. Unclear if FDA would approve both together (possibly holding one application again, stuff of nightmares) or whether they’d allow mix and match the same as they have for other age groups depending on what primary series a kid got. FDA has also been pretty quiet about whether they’ll allow the same mice data sub for BA4/5 as they did for 12+. I’d be mildly pessimistic about getting shots in arms in advance of early Nov but it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

Thanks for the details! I figured if they'd be able to get it they'd be cutting it close.

Presumably if Moderna submits first, we'll have to wait for Pfizer and then they'll get approved together, but if Pfizer submits first, it'll be the only one to get approved. I dare them to prove me wrong.

Oh you know that’s what I was thinking when I wrote that parenthetical. Then I got thinking and couldn’t remember if I’d reversed the sponsors and dates in my memory. I dont think I did but someone more dedicated could check my post history bc I’m sure I mentioned it in last month’s thread.
Meanwhile Andy Slavitt* and others are signaling no <5 boosters until after the new year so I’m just going to… cry I guess. *you’ll recall that he totally foresaw the <5 approval delay last time so it’s not great.

I'm so sorry, seeyalater52! Fingers crossed that it's mild and the rest of your household stays negative.
Open all of your windows if possible, run fans. If you have the energy it's pretty easy to put together a box fan filter: cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filters/

Thanks, friends.
We have 2 CR boxes going bc I’m a clean air nerd. So far adults are both negative and masking.
I’m grateful kiddo is vaccinated, he is super snotty and uncomfortable but so far not extremely ill. Post vaccination I worry a lot less about acute infection and a lot more about long term impacts, especially with reinfection which feels very inevitable at this point with no end in sight. I definitely should have picked a pandemic hobby that wasn’t researching every bit of evidence about covid. 😬
I'm with you. I worry more about long term impacts. I know all too well what it's like to live with life long disabilities. It's so enraging that people (in general) are so dismissive of the massive disabling that is happening in real time.
Reinfection and long-term effects are worrying me too because my son has it for the second time and it is so much worse than the first time three months ago. I haven’t slept in four days because I’m trying to keep 104 fevers down and I’m listening to his cough to make sure he’s breathing okay. A friend I know (who is fully vaccinated and boosted) has it for the third time this year, so every three months seems to be a thing.

Sending you hugs, it’s got to be so hard seeing your baby so sick. This really sucks.
Also not to be a drama llama but we are out of daycare for 10 days including nearly 2 entire weeks of work days between my spouse and I for just one infection (and that’s assuming neither of us are also positive) so this is also feeling extremely unsustainable from a work and PTO perspective. I have no idea how anyone, us included, is going to keep carrying on like this.

Here’s some reporting on Twitter that references the most concrete info we have seen on a 5-11 booster so far (mid-late Oct from the CDC guide.)

I know what you mean.... I guess most people just don’t get it but it royally sucks not being able to do what other people take for granted or seeing everyone living their life so carefree.
