Liz Truss sacks Kwasi Kwarteng ahead of corporation tax U-turn
Kwasi Kwarteng has been sacked as chancellor as Liz Truss tries to restore her political authority ahead of a U-turn on parts of her disastrous mini-budget later on Friday, according to sources.
Downing Street sources confirmed to the Guardian the prime minister wanted Kwarteng to “carry the can” over her climbdown as she sought to calm the markets and the nerves of jittery Tory MPs.
Truss met Kwarteng, previously her closest political ally and co-architect of her plan for growth, for crisis talks in Downing Street after he dashed back overnight from an International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting in Washington DC.
Note from me - this doesn't mean that Truss will last much longer as PM and there's a lot of us who are calling for a general election versus the Tory party picking yet another PM. I'm not holding my breath.

And we now have Jeremy Hunt (replace one letter with a C and you'll get my feelings on him).
Let's just say that he's the one who began the destruction of the NHS and fucked around with his own finances, such that he almost had to go to court about it. He's awful, though I'm not shocked he's taking the position, as no one with any modicum of honour would do so.

Your link doesn't work. So was Kwarteng on a plane that Truss had u-turn so she could fire him?
Liz Truss becoming PM reminds me of Paul Ryan becoming Speaker of the House--it seemed like there's just a huge lack of competent leadership that allows these people to slip into position without many other options
I think it’s only a matter of time before the other 2 resign. I’m interested in the investigation into redistricting. My district was redrawn and my city council person (a woman of East Indian background) oversaw a very diverse district now oversees a more homogeneous area and I know she was very upset about losing those neighborhoods she once oversaw, including her own.

My favorite comic response to all of this so far. Daily Star has a live feed of a picture of Truss and a lettuce to see which lasts longer.
Moderators closed tonight's Wisconsin Senate debate by asking each candidate to say something they find admirable about the other.
Lt. Gov Mandela Barnes (D) said Sen. Ron Johnson (R) is a "family man."
Johnson said Barnes is "against America."
The audience booed Johnson.
I could not hate Johnson more. He's such a desperate asshole. His supporters on the FB page which held the debate cried that it was biased toward liberals. Like, bitch...as if it wouldn't be if it were hosted in some random northern town full of republicans. You whine because it's biased and dismiss your candidate's message/policy/answers. Peak ignorance.

I see so many Zeldin signs around my school, it’s terrifying. NYTimes has said that the polls are showing Hochul with a 10 point lead, but my god, that’s too close for comfort.

That surprises me, but I guess it shouldn't. I'm sooo nervous about all (or at least most) of the races. It's so scary what a precarious spot we're in and how much hangs in the balance.

Same. I’m actually terrified for midterms, and I wish we could fast forward.
I drove barely over the border into PA today. I was stopped at a traffic light and noticed a random "Oz for Senate" sign on the ground. It felt out of place. He's from New Jersey! I hope the people of PA are smarter than this.
Ben Sasse is the proverbial broken clock. Sometimes he says something right, but he's generally wrong all the time. There is no flipping NE. I did once live next door, as in we shared a wall in a rowhouse, with a pro-choice great guy who regularly ran for office knowing he'd never win. That was in one of the most liberal districts in the state.
I'm mostly offended Sasse is in any way in the universe of UF president and likely to get it! whiskey tango foxtrot
Eh, Sasse is a decent candidate in a lot of ways. He is an academic and has experience in higher ed administration. My main concern is twofold: was he chosen by the board of trustees to appease all of the rabid republicans in the state government? It won’t be easy to paint him as a liberal radical but I know someone will try it. Secondly, how much, if any, resistance will he put up to DeSantis’s crusade agains the state university system?
Sasse was president of a university with 1600 students so not great experience.
I don't think he'll put up much resistance. He'll speak out sometimes and then would vote with the party.

Unfortunately, many are not (I originate from Trumpian land which is also the land of corruption in many levels of gov't).

Same, I just want it all to be over. I hope it isn't too disastrous for Dems but could totally see it if it is.

One of my favorite podcasts calls him droz just as one word. I'm sure it's too reemphasize the Dr part. It makes me laugh, and I fully approve. He's such a dick.

@@@@
Our elementary school district board election is going crazy. The district sent an email last month to parents through our community email blast system for a community event downtown that included a family friendly drag show. Some have lost their minds and this has now turned into a single voting issue. They have have equated drag shows and transgender issues with sexualization of children and grooming. 😩
Their candidate also sent out a mailer saying he was supported by “[city] democrats”. He’s endorsed by the gop. It makes me so mad.
I’m hoping we have enough sane folks to keep the nonsense out of our school board.
"A new PAC, Healthcare for Action, launched this summer, aims to get health care workers to run for Congress. It's endorsed the four Democratic doctor candidates and is raising money for each.
Of note: In Congress, Republican doctors outnumber their Democratic counterparts.
In the Senate, there are four Republican doctors: Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy.). Paul, who's seeking a third term in November, could be in line to chair the Senate health committee if Republicans flip control of the chamber."
I am real worried about our mid-terms here in Kansas even after the historic support for abortion in August. If we lose our democratic governor or Kobach becomes Attorney General I just...please no.
NY Times poll just dropped and it's so bad for Dems. Lost any edge they had this summer. Enough women don't seem to care about social issues to make a dent against economic concerns.

I saw this. I feel like now we have to lump in Gen X with Boomers now given this graph...

DON'T KILL ME GEN X PLEASE!!!
This is a poll of just 792 people.
We need to be worried, yes, and we need to vote.
But this is some bullshit from the NYT.
Perhaps, I do need to look into this more but it's also not shocking to me if the poll is reasonable. IMO, this election is going to be about the economy/inflation.

Don’t get me wrong. I have major anxiety over the midterms. And I agree that the economy will figure heavily, which is why groups hoping to see the GOP take power are doing things like cutting oil production.
But I think this is incredibly irresponsible journalism.

Welcome to the NYT. They're often shit. Although if true, I'll happily renounce my tail end of x status and embrace millennial.

I really do NOT see many Oz signs here. And I've driven into Pennsyltucky on several occasions over the last 6 or so months and they are rare.
Mastriano signs are not rare, though Shapiro holds a 9%-15% lead over him. Even averaging the GOP's poll bias over the last 3 election cycles, which would give them maybe a 4% boost, Mastriano is very, very, very unlikely to win. *knock on wood* Oz/Fetterman is tightening, but a lot of MAGAts are either holding their noses to vote for him or skipping that race. There's not a lot of enthusiasm.
