Flu has been slowly taking down the other 4th grade class. It's only a matter of time until it crosses the hall. Super glad for the rec here to get the vaccine early. Fingers crossed it skips us!
For schools with a flu outbreak, is there any discussion that masks will help prevent spread?
In Macomb County, Michigan - No. There was no mask mandate at all last school year.
DS1 is getting his bivalent booster tomorrow. Hooray for convenient pedi vaccine clinic hours!
I'm jealous. For flu and covid, our pediatrician's vax clinics have been weekdays between 10-3.
Because no kids have other places to be during that time apparently.
Same. Our pediatrician gives the Covid vaccine once a month, on Wednesdays during the workday, lol. So very helpful of them. We drove 45 min to a clinic for our initial shots b/c I'm not waiting around for that shit.

Our family pcp has flu shots from 9am-12pm M-F only. I'm sure covid shots are similar but I didn't even bother to ask. F that noise. We take DS6 to Walgreens on a Friday after school or on Saturdays for all flu & covid shots.
I...did not realize how spoiled we are with our pedi flu shot access. What in the world are these places thinking? l ike, do you want your patients to get flu shots or not? why are you making it so hard??

Agreed!
My pedi had combined flu/Covid vaccine clinics on various days of the week, including Saturdays, and at various times ranging from 9 am to 8 pm, depending on the day (e.g., Monday from 9-5, Tuesday from 5-8 pm, etc). They definitely made it so that you could work around any schedule limitations.

I don't know that I have ever been this jealous of a message board post!

This is what our pedi's used to do with flu shots pre-covid but since covid they've been doing this weekdays 10-3 business.
My <5 DDs got their third Pfizer shot last week. (We spaced all three shots out by 8 weeks, per our pedi's and health department's recommendation). They also both had (what I can only presume was) Omicron Covid in early May.
It feels good to have completed that process. I feel much better going into the holidays this year than I did the last two!
Glad I called ahead for Walgreens to get my 8yo the bivalent. "We don't have it yet."
"Even though your website says you do and it's pulled from the same vials as the adult dose?"
"Nope. Don't have it." Click.
Ughhhhhh.
three pharmacies who didn't read the directions and had it on their website that they had it.. and we finally got the booster for my 11 year old today. It took a lot of calling around. And they wonder why people aren't getting vaccinated.
My pedi does drive thru flu shot clinics! I’ve actually never done it, but sounds amazing and I’m really going to try to schedule it this year. They don’t even get out of their car seats.

We did that during covid! It was super convenient. But it was also sorta awful for my very shot adverse daughter who at a minimum likes to smash her face into me or MH and really prefers to be on my lap with her face in my shoulder when somebody comes at her with a needle. (I keep wondering when she's gonna outgrow that, but I'm starting to think the answer is never) She totally freaked out getting a shot while strapped down and across the car from us since she couldn't "hide" from it. My son didn't give a flying fuck though, so....just something to think about for anybody who has a slightly needle phobic kid.

I should’ve got my under 5 vaxxed months ago but it’s felt impossible….
I snagged one in July. It did make my kiddo really sick. I’ve been trying to find a second but only found the occasional Wednesday at 1:00 or something random like that where i would have to miss a day of work. Decided today I’d just take whatever I can get.
None of the doctors are even offering it anymore. Our pedi didn’t because their office was too small. The big ones aren’t now either. There was one time slot (from the department of health, not a Dr office) in the next month available in a couple weeks. One. I took it, but yikes. Thankfully a Friday so he can be sick all weekend. We also haven’t found flu shots yet and those make him really sick too, so I always want Fridays for those
I got DS1 vaxxed right away as soon as I could. But it’s crazy how hard it’s been to find little kid shots! If it is this hard to find the second will I be able to find the third at all

Random Moderna trial update. KidCove, the Moderna <5 trial, has been slowly vaccinating vaccine group kids from the primary series trial with a BA1 bivalent booster ad part of an open access booster trial (all original trial kids are eligible, they all get the real vaccine so there’s no placebo group.).Jwas originally placebo group in the initial trial so he hasn’t been eligible for this. They kept telling us the spacing would be 4 months post 2nd dose (his was in July) and we had to wait. But then I saw some other trial parents referencing their site’s spacing and the consent for the trial, which I saw a photo of, clearly says the minimum interval is 3 months, not 4. So I bugged the shit out of my trial site and made our coordinator closely read the consent instead of her notes on it and I was right!
This is the story of how J is getting a bivalent vaccine on Monday afternoon! This trial only has one blood draw, same day as the booster dose, so I’m also nervous about that. He did great in the initial trial so hoping being 2 isn’t a recipe for disaster there.
Not quite as ideal as BA5, but at this point I assume he will be eligible for another booster by the time it’s approved for <5 so I’m taking it and happy to have that extra protection during the holiday season and forthcoming wave.
Remember antivirals work for flu too and the fda just approved xofluza (treatment = 1 single dose) down to age 5 in August. For younger kids tamiflu is good. A had it around age 2 and he was feeling better so quickly afterwards.
This is fascinating, I'm glad you mentioned this! Now I'm mad at myself for not researching more earlier this week.
My 8-yo has been SO sick since last Friday and and the doctor's office even said to wait until today to bring him in. I had no idea antivirals were authorized for kids so I didn't push it. He started feeling better in mornings, but the fever and lethargy comes back every afternoon. So we took him in and he's negative for COVID (tested at home several times already) and flu (got our flu shots 3 weeks ago). So I'm sure antivirals wouldn't help with whatever-the-hell-this-is, but I didn't realize it may have been an option!
Sorry pixy0stix. Hope he recovers quickly. That’s interesting about the throat swab. H and I had Covid in Jan and H didn’t turn a rapid positive until he did his throat and nose. And for me the worst of it was the sore throat (felt almost like strep).
I finally found a Moderna booster appt for DD1! It’s in 2 weeks, I can’t wait. I haven’t heard any of her friends talking about getting it. I’m curious what the uptake will be in my area (previously very highly vaxxed).
27 hours after the booster and all three of us are fine. No real reactions at all. I did sleep 12 hours last night but I had a busy week and I’m not sure if it was that or the shot. Mild arm pain for all of us this morning that resolved by this afternoon. We all got Pfizer.
DD(6) and I got our Moderna boosters today! I also got my flu shot (DD already had hers). We have sore arms and are both tired—but that could also be because we didn’t get enough sleep last night. She doesn’t have school tomorrow and I took the day off, so planning on a low key day just in case. DH got both shots (flu and COVID (Pfizer) earlier in the week—he had no side effects.
Our pediatrician’s office dropped the ball on flu clinics this year. I finally gave up trying to schedule there. When I got my flu and booster at our local Walgreens last week, the pharmacist confirmed which Walgreens in the area was taking kids. I made an appt for DS, but it still took 40 minutes of waiting with both kids (OMG) in the pharmacy chairs. Bonus: I was on a Teams meeting so they couldn’t watch YouTube on my phone. Anyways, we survived (barely) and apparently they were teaching a pharmacy student how to dose the under 12 booster which is why it took so long. DS had a headache the next day, but otherwise fine. We both got Pfizer. And nobody appears to have picked up any communicable disease from rolling around on the Walgreens floor.
CVS wouldn’t let me schedule flu shots for the kids, but would let me schedule boosters. Scheduling is so random and frustrating. DH is in charge of handling DD’s shots so good luck to him.
The 8 yo got his booster at Walgreens on Friday as scheduled. No issues. DH took him and said it was a bit of chaos with people trying to get various shots without appointments, but the pharmacist made sure all appointments were taken care of. No side effects.
My male teen got his covid booster yesterday. We leave for Disney in 10 days. He just finished up XC season so our window was tight to get his shot before the trip.
I got to Walgreens and realized they were only giving out moderna. All of us have had pfizer up to this point. I was a little hesitant as I know it is a stronger shot, but also knew I needed to get it done yesterday. Anyways he is really feeling the effects today. I feel really bad. This one knocked him out way more than the last couple shots. Hopefully that means he has a really robust immune reaction that helps him this winter.
I did not get the bivalent booster for my youngest as he just got his original booster a month ago. We will hold off for him until later in the winter.
So that means we all are boosted (for the most part) and have our flu shots. Ready for Disney!

See you there lol! We are staying at Poly and I am just beyond excited. I have been obsessively making packing lists all morning.
My 6 year old got her flu shot/bivalent booster on Saturday. She complained of a sore arm on Sunday but felt 100% after I made her go to swim lessons.
My toddler is still in the Moderna trial. I got a call today that we’ll be scheduling for the bivalent boosters soon. Hooray!
My sister has been seeing a specialist ever since her covid booster caused an autoimmune flare. The specialist has been seeing a lot of people flaring from the boosters and has recommended that none of her patients get mRNA shots anymore. I hope there is able to be research done on that, instead of people assuming that all people not getting vaxxed are anti-science.
Both my kids were boosted at separate times (DS a few weeks ago since he's 12, DD is 9 and got hers last week) and missed two days of school with various ailments in the days that followed. I'm not sure if it was just a weird coincidence. Neither of them had reactions to previous shots other than DS testing positive for COVID the day after his previous booster.
Needless to say, I would plan for the possibility of missing some school with your kids boosters.
