I have been working with 40 middle schoolers for six weeks on the school play and suddenly there are kids out left and right for sickness this week. Mostly flu, from what I am hearing, but who knows. I looked at flu numbers yesterday for the state and we are on the rise already -- there is a flu outbreak currently at a high school about an hour south of me where they shut down activities (but not classes) because around a thousand kids were out sick. There are also a bunch of gastro issues being reported, too, so maybe flu + covid or flu + another virus?
I was holding off on getting my flu shot on the advice of my doc, who was looking ahead to another possible spring/early summer wave like there was this year, and now I wish I'd gotten it the first week of October like I'd planned. I'm masking again when I'm at the school, and we asked the kids to wash hands/use sanitizer/strongly consider masking up for a few days to get them through the week so they can actually participate in the performance, but 95% of them are not.
My pedi sent out an email yesterday that the local children’s hospitals are full and closed to ambulances. 😞
And they’re canceling well visits for now.
So scary!
It's really bad around here. They are treating kids in the hallways of CT Children's Hospital and considering calling in the National Guard and setting up tents outside.

I don't understand why schools/towns/ANYONE won't tell people to wear masks. It's infuriating.
When children’s hospitals are at capacity I agree kids should be masking. My kids went back to masking this week when they started having stuffy noses. Ugh.

Horrifying here in RI too. The Children’s hospital is in the news this week for being at 125% capacity and they’re considering building a field hospital outside like in Hartford.
I feel awful for all the kids, families, and peds providers. It is a combination of covid, RSV, flu and other viruses. It’s criminal that the communities level map from the CDC doesn’t have any data about Children’s hospital capacity because it makes the situation look a lot better than it really is hospital-wise (although our area isn’t doing great regardless.)
There were newscasters outside the hospital when I drove by this morning but election day is almost here and no politician has the guts to make any statements that might anger the anti-maskers or anti-vaxxers. I'm hoping that some regulations or recommendations will come out after 11/8.

Our local news is reporting that at least one pharmacy chain is cancelling vaccination appointments because they don't have the staff available to administer them.
- H developed symptoms Tuesday and tested positive Wednesday. Kid was negative.
- Kid came home from school Wednesday with a sore throat that was gone on Thursday morning. Negative Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
- Thursday evening she came home coughing and stuffy. Negative test, went to UC, negative PCR. Told to treat her as positive since she has symptoms and a known exposure.
-Friday still negative. Worse cough.
I don’t really plan to test her anymore. As of this morning still a bad cough and runny nose.
I guess it ultimately doesn’t matter if she has COVID or something else. I’m mostly just curious if I answer “yes,” going forward when asked if she’s had it. So, is it possible to have covid and never pop a positive?

While I’m sure it’s possible to have Covid and not test positive, there are also a ton of other viruses going around. DD2 has been sick pretty much all month with various colds. I would not tell people or assume she actually had Covid unless she got a positive somewhere. It sucks not knowing, but at this point does it really matter?

I mean, sure, it's possible, but all those other pre-covid viruses still exist.
Ultimately, as long as you keep her home till she's well and mask her if she absolutely has to go out, I'm not sure it really matters much if it's covid or something else.
