For the flu shots, does your doc office not offer "tech appts" where you can schedule a appt to get jabbed?
There are a lot fewer vaccine appointments being offered at the pediatrician this year due to nursing/tech shortages. We've gotten our kids vaccinated at pharmacies instead this year.
My kids seem fine after their bivalent boosters--just sore arms. My reaction was milder than the second and third shots. I had some chills last night and a headache this morning.
Even states that reopened quickly saw declines in scores during pandemic:
Math Scores Dropped in Every State During Pandemic, Report Card Shows The largest Education Department analysis of test scores since Covid-19 pandemic began reveals sweeping declines
'The test results follow a period in which school districts wrestled with how quickly to resume in-person instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic. Scores fell across jurisdictions with differing policies for schooling in the pandemic. States that returned to in-person learning relatively quickly, such as Arizona, saw declines along with those that stayed remote longer, such as California. Experts are divided on the degree to which policies such as remote learning affected student achievement.
“It’s extremely complex,” said National Center for Education Statistics Commissioner Peggy Carr. “We have massive, comprehensive declines everywhere.” Dr. Carr acknowledged difficulties in teaching and learning caused by school closures and remote learning but said the causes of learning loss might also include mental-health challenges faced by students and behavioral problems at schools. Drops in math exceeded those in reading because students tend to also learn reading outside of school, while mathematics learning depends more on classroom instruction, Dr. Carr said.'
DD (6) got her Moderna bivalent booster at Walgreens on Sat. She had a temp in the 99s-100.2 at various points yesterday and didn't feel great. She said her arm was really sore, and she's not a complainer about pain. I wasn't surprised, because it looked a lot like how I felt after Moderna boosters especially, but glad to have it done.
Costco contacted my friend to tell her the pharmacist failed to dilute her son’s vaccine so he got a “super concentrated high dose” (my friend’s words).
Owen is 11 and small. I told her weight is irrelevant and doses are different bc of immune system maturity. Does she have anything to worry about? Neither her pediatrician or the health department are concerned. I told her I’m not either. Would you be?
ETA: Further explanation is the pharmacist did not dilute the injection with saline, does that just mean he got the adult dose?

If neither the pediatrician nor the health department are concerned, no, I wouldn’t be concerned

If neither her pediatrician or the health department are concerned, then what does it matter if you are concerned? Why does it matter what a message board full of strangers thinks?

Are you asking why a mom is freaking out about her kid? Because she’s a mom and it’s her kid.
And, Yes, how odd that I sought out the opinions of others on a public message board. Especially one where plenty of posters have demonstrated in depth medical knowledge and specific knowledge about these vaccines.

Do you know what brand the vaccine was? I’m assuming the pharmacist didn’t dilute the vial with saline but if it was Moderna they likely did draw the smaller peds dose from the undiluted vial. So it’s not the same as getting an adult vaccine, and less overall vaccine than an adult who got an undiluted dose. Same with Pfizer.
While not ideal, this is a common administration error and hasn’t seemed to cause any major problems. This is a little speculative, but the child’s age and sex there may be a higher likelihood of myocarditis (still very small overall, but worth watching for) with the more concentrated dose. Just keep an eye out and bring him in for observation if anything seems off.

Thanks for explaining. It was Pfizer.
It really should be fine. The overall Pfizer dose is lower than Moderna’s to start with, so if it makes you feel better a Pfizer undiluted dose is less vaccine than an undiluted Moderna dose.
Can I ask a question or think something out? I need to get my kids (boy/10, boy/7) and myself COVID boosters early next month. We had COVID in August so the 3 month time span recommended by some health agencies is almost up and I expect an uptick near the holidays. The kids had Pfizer and I had Moderna. From my reading, it appears Moderna may be slightly better at sustained protection, so I am leaning towards Moderna for everyone. Is this sound logic or should I just go for what is easiest to find? It looks like both are available locally (unlike when we all did our primary series and only Moderna was available for me and Pfizer for them). They had few side effects and mild COVID. I developed pleurisy after my second shot, but was fine with the Moderna booster (I thought I was getting pleurisy again, but the pain resolved within a few hours so probably just pulled a muscle). The possibility of pleurisy is my only hesitation with Moderna (and it could have been a coincidence for me).

Personally I’d get Moderna unless it’s too hard to find. We have no idea whether or when (or to whom) additional booster doses will be available beyond this dose, so having what is almost certainly better durability is pretty high on my list of factors to consider. I wouldn’t fault you for wanting to get Pfizer for yourself given the issue you had previously, but it sounds like your other booster was ok.

J did well with his booster dose (BA1 booster through the Moderna trial.) No side effects almost 24 hours in. He was a little cranky this morning but nothing beyond the realm of normal for a 2 year old.
seeyalater52 Thank you for validating my thoughts! I’m a statistician/educator by trade and did lots of research initially but have been slammed this semester at work so I haven’t had the chance to pull papers so I am acting way more “guess and check” than I normally do.

It’s also hard to be a researcher right now because there’s really very little data on the bivalent vaccines (at least not the BA5 version that was made available) and comparing the manufacturers to one another. A lot of this is going off of the principles that seemed to underlie the older data. One of the strongest pieces of data is the durability of dose response, which favors Moderna. But then of course there are the opposing factors that lead people to want to choose the lower doses (mostly side effect related.) It’s a lot to balance, and everyday non-researchers are being asked to parse a really tough set of concerns and considerations in this crazy pandemic world.

From my knowledge, only Pfizer is diluted before administration, and that's just the pediatric doses anyway. Moderna does not require dilution (at least the vials we get). If the pedi and health department aren't concerned, I'm sure they'll be fine. Sorry that happened, I know it's nerve wracking when that stuff happens. I'm sure the pharmacist feels awful, and your friend's son wasn't the only child who got the concentrated dose.
DD(6) and I got our Moderna boosters today! I also got my flu shot (DD already had hers). We have sore arms and are both tired—but that could also be because we didn’t get enough sleep last night. She doesn’t have school tomorrow and I took the day off, so planning on a low key day just in case. DH got both shots (flu and COVID (Pfizer) earlier in the week—he had no side effects.
Circling back on this. These boosters definitely seemed to hit us a little harder than our last boosters. I had Moderna for all of my previous 3 shots, and DD had Pfizer for hers. We had sore arms (which was expected—silver lining was that my sore COVID shot arm distracted from any soreness on the flu shot arm), and we were both pretty wiped yesterday (hard to say how much of that is due to the shot and how much is from having a big weekend). Glad we both had the day off, we slept in yesterday morning and had a pretty lazy day.
Today we are both back to our usual selves with some lingering soreness is our arms, though I’m a little sore in the armpit too—I have not been after previous shots.
I echo PP that our Walgreens was not particularly speedy—we were there about an hour including the 15 minute wait.
DS (5.5) tested positive for Covid yesterday (1st time!) and spent the day on the couch watching TV. He's totally recovered today but neither him nor DD (3) can go back to school school/daycare until next week at the least, assuming the rest of us stay negative (which LOL). I'M SO SICK OF THIS. It's impossible to be productive at work while parenting 3 & 5 year olds and my job is so so busy right now. If this turns into an extended event of one of us testing positive every 4 or 5 days and we're doing this dance for weeks I'll lose it.

Ugh no!!! I’m sorry scm1011. Fingers crossed the rest of you stay negative!
Sigh. H tested positive today. The kid and I are negative so far. It was good 2.5 year run for our household. Waiting for the doctor to call H back since he's T1D - his symptoms are body aches, the chills, and exhaustion at this point so I don't know if they'll want him on anything special.

Ugh, that sucks. I hope his case stays relatively mild and you and DD don’t catch it. If you need anything, let me know.

Has anyone been able to schedule a 6-11 Moderna booster at CVS? The website is still showing me only Pfizer for my entire state.
Walgreens is offering it but they don't have "group scheduling" option so to vaccinate my whole family I need to find 5 consecutive appointments at a time that doesn't interfere with work/school/sports/birthday party which is proving to be near impossible.

Just call Walgreens to schedule. Worked for a friend of mine with the same issue.

I tried this (both the local store and the call center) and they both told me too bad, so sad and that they can't schedule anything different than what the website is showing me. And they said if I just show up with one or two appointments no guarantees they will have time to do all 5 people.

Weird, my friend had to do seven people. Whoever answered the phones just booked 7 consecutive appointments - so say 12:00, 12:15.12:30, 12:45, 1:00, 1:15, and 1:30. But they all had shots in their arms well before the last time given.

Oh that’s the problem, that they still do need to book 5 consecutive appointments. I’m trying to do it on a Saturday evening and booking 5 consecutively would put us past the last appointment that location offers even though logistically it wouldn’t take 5 appointments worth of time. I was trying to get them to double book us and their system won’t do that.

I see, I thought you were just worried about getting out faster.
