Holy crap. Liz Truss resigned. Shortest-serving PM in UK history. And now, time for a general election. This revolving door is getting ridiculous. It's no longer the will of the people being served.
Oh WOW. I was not expecting that. Thinking of you and everyone else over there, friend. It’s been frustrating to watch.
We've been expecting that it would happen soon and after a few things happening recently (people leaving the cabinet, bullying that happened last night in Parliament around some decisions, etc), I'm not fully shocked, but still a bit shocked.

I just saw this, and made an offhand joke about not outlasting the lettuce. Now that I’ve said it tho I hope that was started as a political critique, not as a generalized misogynistic one.
Most of my team is based in London- and I just got a message from one of my coworkers about this.
She said people are saying Boris Johnson may come back
That would be the worst idea ever. It's like they all have forgotten that he's a lying liar who lies and does jack. That's just one reason he was made to resign. Ugh, these people.

No. Believe me, it wasn't a general misogynistic thing. She was just awful.

Thanks. I was pretty sure that was the case but I’m just not sophisticated enough with your ways.

Honestly though how did this happen?
I know the mechanics, she SOMEHOW got 80k votes but surely those people didn't actually believe she could do it? Or did they think they could prop her up and manipulate things from behind the scenes?
I will admit that my first reaction upon hearing it on the radio in my car this morning was to yell out loud, "Holy shit, she didn't outlast the lettuce!"
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

It's not a salary exactly. She can claim up to £115,000 allowance for the rest of her life despite her short stint as Prime Minister. The allowance from the government will reimburse Truss for expenses spent while maintaining public duties.
Does she get the lifetime PM pension or whatever they call it? That sounds like a sweet gig.
Yes she does! I think it's around 114,000 pounds per year.
Crazy! I was wondering about that, and what happens to the political careers of all the PMs who resign, especially after a short time. Do they go back to their old role?
Most US Presidents retire (as they were typically at or past retirement age) and the younger ones write books, do speaking engagements and philanthropy work. It’s not like they go back and run for Senate.

US Grant travelled the world for 2 years after he left office, and spent a lot of his savings. Then, he went into business with his son and with Ferdinand Ward, and opened an investment firm. Ward was a con artist and stole most of the money that was invested with them.
Back then, US presidents didn't really get pensions, and he had to give up his military pension when he became POTUS.
Grant starting writing articles about his experiences in the Civil War to make extra money. But, right after Ward stole all of the money from their firm, Grant discovered that he had incurable throat cancer. He had to write his memoirs on his death bed so that he wouldn't leave his widow, Julia, destitute when he died. Mark Twain found out what commission Grant had been promised from a publisher, then offered Grant an even higher pension to publish his memoirs with Twain's publishing company instead.
Grant had to write right up until a few days before he died. The memoirs were published after he passed away. His memoirs made a lot of money for his surviving family.

It's mind boggling.
Yes. She was being led by the nose by the ERG, which is a right wing think tank (libertarian) who have basically tried to run the gov't and were instrumental in helping get Brexit votes. The 80k votes were from Tory members, who don't even have to live here or be citizens - they just have to pay a fee. And it was from a group of pond scum candidates (imagine having some of your worst Republicans, including the stupid ones, being selected as candidates for an internal 'election'). Unfortunately, there's not much hope that they will call for a General Election, so we'll get more pond scum for the next two years and a few months. UGH.

They remain the MP for their constituency until there is another vote for election for there (and they may move to a new area of the country). And they tend to get high paying speaking gigs. Despite being an MP who should be doing work, Boris Johnson has been speaking to groups in the UK and going on holiday -- so no different to when he was PM.

Isn't it a minority government, though? In theory, if the pond scum is sublimely awful, that could cause a coalition to fall apart, correct?
