China is now facing what is likely the world's largest COVID surge of the pandemic. China's public health officials say that possibly 800 million people could be infected with the coronavirus over the next few months. And several models predict that a half million people could die, possibly more.
This makes me so nervous. I knew they Zero Covid was a dangerous strategy, but the numbers here are staggering, and the chances of this morphing into a new variant seem almost guaranteed. Ugh.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Is this 2020 again? Italy is reporting today that two flights from China were tested for Covid and 50% of the passengers on both flights tested positive for Covid.
They are now testing to see which strain of the virus is found from those flights.
Hmm.... Maybe we should do something or is the cat already out of the bag ?

I wonder what the numbers would be if you compared with other long haul flights with different origins. Because I feel like flights are where most people I know seem to have gotten COVID this past year.
Speaking of... why didn't I make my in laws promise to mask on the airplane before saying they could fly out and visit us in the spring? What was I thinking?

I know this country was months behind the initial offering of the vaccine (started April 2021, like many nations), but I'd thought they'd started to catch up. Bivalent vaccine possibly early 2023 as of today's announcement. Huh.
At least masking seems to be around 50/50 with it still being mandatory on planes and ferries which is the only way you can get to where I am. There hasn't been a local case in many months I don't think even with holiday travel.
I'm pretty impressed that they're now using the app that was previously required everytime we entered any location and upon demand at road blocks or apparently even on a sidewalk, did not experience this but yes to road blocks with national guard, to now track and display many other infectious diseases. Rabies (human and animal), tb, dengue, hfm, measles in addition to covid. People (including my foreigner self) can also now schedule various health appts at many govt facilities as of this week.
I'm glad that, though it was basically unused as of may, that app investment has been redirected for general public health. In my very unofficial sampling, though, no one knows about that. I'm evangelizing, though I'm nerdy enough I probably check weekly now that they're tracking and dispensing at least 6 infectious diseases.
I'm sorry so many of you have been taken down despite best efforts.
