They adjourned for the day but the sideshow is still kinda going. They’ll be back in session tomorrow to continue beating this dead horse and many days after that for as long as it takes to get the votes needed to elect a speaker. There’s little they can do without this.
This article is full of white tears! So many feelings.
McCarthy began and ended the day defiant, telling the Republican conference in meeting Tuesday morning that he was done negotiating and had “earned” the speaker’s gavel, according to multiple people in the room. McCarthy was so enthused, he finished his brief remarks with “god d----t” before literally dropping the microphone. 😂
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) yelled “this is bulls---t!” 😂😂
“Now here we are being sworn at instead of being sworn in,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (Colo.) said at a news conference. 😂😂😂
Crenshaw asked Cloud what other concessions McCarthy could make to win over his opponents — and then demanded to know why Freedom Caucus members are considered more conservative than him. “What about them is more conservative?” a frustrated Crenshaw asked Cloud. “I’m not f---ing joking!”
At the beginning of the day, Rep. Steve Womack (Ark.) reflected on the vitriol that had flared dramatically, and publicly, within the Republican conference. Asked how a staunch conservative and institutionalist like him felt, he became visibly emotional. “I don’t know how to answer the question. Really. I just hurt for the institution. It’s painful,” he said.

Omg I’m dying at that article. Is it too much to hope that this will occupy these guys for a few weeks at least? It would be nice to hit the first wave of state leg session starts without any federal drama for once!
I wish the voters cared how dysfunctional these ass clowns are.....I doubt there will be any repercussions for these antics & being so incapable of governing. I wonder want Nancy Pelosi was doing yesterday.
Apparently there was a memo in the Democratic Caucus because a lot of Members showed up with popcorn to watch this shitshow go down.
<snipped tweets for length>
(Tweets from Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Congresswoman Jen Shakowsky, Congresswoman Grace Meng, and Congressman Ted Lieu holding bags and buckets of popcorn in the House today)
I imagine that’s someone’s go-to Christmas gift that they give to all their congressional colleagues every year. Either that or they seriously planned in advance 💀
There are Garretts in most major US airports now, as far as I know. So it was pretty easy to pick some up en route to the swearing in/start of congress.
Myself, I actually think the popcorn stunt was in poor taste. Yes, the republicans are a mess right now, but nothing is needed for that to be completely and totally obvious to anyone looking.
How ironic that suddenly they care about "the basis in law, House rule or precedent" when it comes to this.
The article I posted a bit above says, “the problem the Freedom Caucus has is much larger than McCarthy and would require a full conference conversation about the damage their demands could do to the institution.” The White Nationalism was fine, the misogyny business as usual, refusal to follow Constitutional protocol for SCOTUS seat #1 was fine, the abrupt departure from THAT change for SCOTUS seat #3 was all good, but whatever these shitheads want will be too damaging. Too far!

Here’s my unpopular opinion of the day: I think the popcorn is hilarious but seeing a bunch of self styled progressives eating in the chamber instead of wearing high quality masks in the midst of a new covid surge is kind of pissing me off.
Guys how does this end? What are your predictions?
I think if there was enough support for an alternate speaker candidate we’d have seen that emerge by now. I suspect they’ll drag this out quite a bit and McCarthy will end up giving in to more of the FC demands, including procedural changes that make it easier to oust him as speaker. I don’t think it will move quickly though.
I’m not sure I think Dems will (or should) try to step in backing a more moderate GOP speaker unless the concession they get is some sort of power sharing agreement, which I doubt could get a majority vote either.
I admit I only understand politics at basic levels. Is there any chance the democrats could choose a republican they are willing to vote for and convince 5 republicans to vote for that person as well?
I'm going to laugh so hard if Kevin McCarthy has to move his stuff out of the speaker's office.
It was extremely arrogant to move it in in the first place. And the way he said he’d “earned this job.” The white man entitlement. They just claim spaces like the colonizers they idolize.

I thought he already agreed to this? But maybe there's more he can agree to in this regard.
I really hope the Dems don't enter into any kind of an agreement. I don't trust the GOP to hold up their end of the agreement anyway. This is the GOP's mess, they can figure out how to fix it themselves.
