Look, I get that this is a serious breach in our democracy, but ffs these assholes thought they were going to waltz in and own the place and this is happening. They're reaping what they sow right now.
Apparently Trump has asked them to vote for McCarthy because this is an embarrassment. Lololol!
And Boehbert essentially said, “My favorite President called me. No, Mr, President. You have this backwards. You need to tell McCarthy he doesn’t have the votes and needs to step down.”
They’re not even listening to their Leader anymore. That’s going to make Trump really mad!
I saw one R voted present, presumably to just try and be done with it. If we could just get a few more to not pay attention and do that, Jeffries could pull out a win. (I know, I know…it won’t happen.)
I feel bad for the new D Reps whose families came to see them sworn in & they’re now just watching a circus instead of the biggest day of their lives.

WaPo said she voted Present because she wasn't there (arrived late). She's one of the ones that's fucking it up for McCarthy.
Well apparently fentanyl is streaming into all our towns and funerals are in our towns. Who the hell is this guy?
But who was he? Lol, I just finally turned on the sound.
I still don’t know who he is, but he wanted to make sure we all know that Fredrick Douglass was a Republican. Because of course there was no difference between the Republican Party than vs now. 🙄 Edit: I was typing at the same time as pp. Apparently it’s Scott Perry. That makes a lot of sense.

Did Bergman and Buck step out to pee during this vote or is the NYT just missing their vote?
Yeah a bunch of people (including AOC yesterday) have been outside the chamber when their names were called, at the end they circle back to anyone who missed and give them another chance.

Thanks, I was just able to tune in live for the first time. As Jon Stewart said on twitter, "This is the best season of CSPAN ever."
On the 5th round, when the first “present” was said- CSPAN said the present vote was from a woman representing Central Indiana who is thinking of running for a Senate position and would be in a primary. So she is voting present although she did not for the first several rounds. Unsure if it was the same person the next round. Just heard her say present for the 7th round. Sparks was the name.
Tangent: I keep think about Gingrich. Anyone remember how he ended up speaker? Did it take a few votes? That was when the Rs took over the house, and he was a newly elected guy - and out there by 90s standards. I realize not the same situation, but I keep reading all of this and he pops into my head. How did that happen?
. I found this on the NBC news site: “The last time a speaker vote went to multiple ballots was in 1923, when Speaker Frederick Gillett, R-Mass., won re-election on the ninth ballot.”
Yes. That was discussed in this thread. It was more of a political question of how the hell did that happen on one ballot? He was out there, he was brand new, it was a bit of a turmoil time. How the hell did it get in on the first vote. Was there not someone else whose “turn” had come.
ahhh for the peace and serenity of 90s politics. 🤣
If it starts to look like republicans will choose one of the MAGA group would it make since for democrats to try to choose a moderate republican then? Or is it better for them to get a really bad speaker? My thought goes to the line of succession and that it would be good to have a “not as horrible” person in that spot? I wouldn’t think now is the time for democrats to make a move like that, but if this goes one for a couple weeks I wasn’t sure if they should try to choose a republican to vote for. I don’t understand everything enough to really have an opinion on what should happen, I’m just wondering about things as I try to keep up.
Others may disagree but there are a lot of reasons why having a more conservative speaker benefit democrats (primarily them continuing to embarrass and cannibalize each other for the next 2 years) and in my opinion fewer ways having a moderate Republican speaker benefits democrats or the American people, unless they’re able to negotiate for meaningful power sharing. I’m not even sure a moderate GOP speaker could even govern effectively in that scenario.
I think this is about where I stand, but I'm having a hard time articulating. Chaos on the R side of the house means no forward progress on improving Americans' lives; the other side of that coin is that they'll have too much turmoil to accomplish THEIR goals: the foolish investigations, the rolls back of rights, etc. Americans will end up worse off by the end of this Congress but they will have been to fragmented to have more of am impact.

I’ve not seen anything on Twitter indicating any movement. I can’t wait till 8pm. I really need to know the gossip of why they all hate each other so much.
