Why would we want short term limits that would essentially force us to have an entire House of Representatives that has no idea what they're doing? While career politicians aren't always going to necessarily do what is best due to wanting to keep their position, they're also not just going to Leroy Jenkins into the chamber with some crazy shit that could possibly destroy our country.
Great use of Leroy Jenkins. I work with college kids and they legit don’t get the reference.
Oooooooo, the airing of dirty laundry... (threatened with no committee assignments)
I don't even know that is enough of a threat, didn't Boebert just go through a cycle with no committees (and MTG) and like...they don't care. Maybe there's enough other people who want to interrogate Hunter Biden but IDK.
One of the commentators said that MTG loved not having committee assignments because that meant she could just run around and be a troll.

It basically means you’re accountable to no one, which is exactly what these people want.

Institutional knowledge is important but I've come around over the years and believe that that institutional knowledge can remain with the many people who work for Congress that aren't elected officials.
I think 6 years is too few honestly, but I'd be okay with a 10-year limit for the House. Possibly up to 20.
Yes I'm here too. As pixy said, it'd be great to get turtle out. I think 10-20 is a good time limit though because it allows elected officials to have some institutional knowledge without growing cobwebs.
Someone on CNN said at some point it’s going to get problematic because some will need to leave town and do stuff.
Ken Buck (R-CO) has already had to leave. The OK rep that the insurrectionists keep nominating will need to leave soon-ish, his mom died this week and her funeral is this weekend. (per CSPAN)
They're going again. I thought for sure they'd adjourn.
I thought I read somewhere that they couldn't?? Like McCarthy wanted to but didn't have the votes or Dems voted to stay in session and humiliate him?
They can adjourn if they have the votes to adjourn but at any point in time they may not. They will likely vote to adjourn this evening when everyone gets sick of this Groundhog Day.

If it comes down to which caucus is able to keep its members in the room I would not bet against the Democrats.
I don't think this has been covered yet, but what happens if, say, too many republicans have to leave for home, and the Democrats are able to vote in Jeffries as Speaker. What does that do to committee assignments?

My question is...what enforcement mechanism is there for these concessions McCarthy is making? My understanding is the House Rules are voted on AFTER the Speaker is chosen so who is to say that any of this shit passes? Also he can agree to give a committee seat to one of these chucklefucks and just...not do it? And what would they do (assuming the Holman rule doesn't pass the entire Body).
Like you and what army Lauren? (maybe I shouldn't joke, she does have a shit ton of weapons).
I don’t know if this article has been listed in here (doesn’t say anything that’s not been talked about), but I want to put this detail out there for your amusement: “one Republican recalled McCarthy beating his chest in conservatives' direction during a tense closed-door conference meeting, saying: ‘You vote against me? You get less. I take things away.’”
Beating on his chest like a silverback gorilla. Anyone who craves power and desires to wield it so viscerally in this way should not have power.
My self esteem would never be able to withstand ten (and counting) televised humiliating losses. I feel like I have to give McCarthy a small pat on the back for not being curled up in a ball crying. And then I’d tell him to get up and cut the crap.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Michael Moore seems to think there is a realistic chance that some Republicans will make a deal with the Democrats and elect Jeffries. That’s a nice little fantasy, but come the fuck on!!!
Of course he also said the American people will be fine getting through this because we’re stocked up on Pop Tarts from COVID, so……. I guess Kevin isn’t the only one humiliating himself on national television.
If Jeffries gets elected, it's going to be by accident (too many people leaving and lowering the threshold, and others not keeping track of who is voting how). I just don't see it happening and it's kind of ridiculous to even talk about it as a possibility.
I uninstalled Twitter from my phone because it was a time drain for me, it's been about a month and I didn't miss it until this whole thing. I need to see all the tweets 🤣

I don’t think they will work with Dems to elect Jeffries, but I do think them screwing this up and accidentally electing him is a possibility. I will laugh if that happens.
What do people think the best possible outcome is for democrats? Is there anyone the Rs will stand behind that isn’t a clown show? And at this point, from my understanding, anyone they do get behind will also need to agree to all the concessions McCarthy has agreed to, correct? I guess my question is, are we hopeful in any direction? Or is it all bad and we just watch the fun while it happens?

I've never even used Twitter except for a week. I rely on places like Huffpost, Buzzfeed and my husband to gather the best tweets.
I wonder when those supporting McCarthy will give in and try somebody else….I heard Steve Scalise’a name thrown around a bit before all this.
This isn’t a “end game” scenario- this is “what the next two years are going to look like” preview. Doesn’t matter who they looked at this point, it’s gonna be a circus.

This is kind of where I land. Excepting rules shenanigans like bodies in the room they need McCarthy to step aside and a new candidate to back, but I have a really hard time imagining these holdouts agreeing to Scalise, and I have a really hard time imagining a candidate they would back to get a majority.
At this point it’s anyone’s guess what would happen, but there’s not going to be a lot of governing happening the next couple of years regardless.

I mean, a fantasy would be not enough Republicans present, which lowers the majority threshhold and Jeffries wins.
It's hard for me to see a world where a "compromise" candidate wins, because Kevin McCarty et al will literally hand over anything rather than work with the Dems. Also, find me enough Republicans and Democrats who would vote for...I don't even know who? 'Moderate' Republicans with enough experience to be Speaker don't exist. And while the Speaker doesn't have to be a member of Congress this fantasy scenario where they choose John Kasich or Larry Hogan seems even less likely to me (and they don't know shit about fuck about how the House works?).
Honestly best case scenario seems to be that this drags on for another few days and humiliates the GOP and somehow in our goldfish brains we remember it enough to matter in November 2024?
