Say what you want about the college board (I teach APUSH so I get it) but this course was an actual and honest attempt and bringing in diverse voices and a more thoughtful look at AA history which is often rushed through in most APUSH classes.
I really wish the college board would come out harder against him but they are too scared of other states joining in. They need grow a fucking backbone.

My school district in Ohio added this pilot course this school year. I was happy to see it offered and I haven't heard any push back from our more Republican leaning area.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I was just about to post more Florida fuckery — DeSantis asking state universities for detailed info on how many trans students receive gender affirming care.
(Apologies if I’m derailing this thread — both are important issues. But we could fill an entire board with Fuck Florida news today so I thought I’d consolidate.)

Since that is medical care and involves release of medical record information, isn’t that a violation of HIPAA? It may be addressed in the article, but I just saw this between meetings so I haven’t read it yet.

I think it only violates HIPPA if the data is tied to an actual patient. But saying “2 people received gender-affirming care” isn’t itself a violation any more than “15 people received treatment for COVID.”
Of course DeSantis has horrific motives here , and there is fuckery afoot, so it’s okay to be outraged!
Got it. When it said “detailed” I was thinking beyond just numbers. That makes sense.
Detailed in the sense that they want to know a lot of specifics (aggregated, of course.) From the article:
“The request from DeSantis poses a list of questions for universities, such as asking them to provide the number of students or individuals who received gender-affirming treatment, including surgical procedures, spanning the last five years and where the treatment was sought. It also asks how many of those cases were “first-time” visits for treatment or were referred to other facilities.
The DeSantis administration also wants to know how many students were diagnosed with gender identity disorders under a medical classification. Additionally, the request asks for a breakdown of how many people were prescribed puberty blockers, hormones or hormone antagonists, or underwent a medical procedure.”
I mean, this is some bullshit (invasive and chilling) even if it doesn’t technically violate HIPAA.
I really wish the college board would come out harder against him but they are too scared of other states joining in. They need grow a fucking backbone.
Why would they? They are an agent of white supremacy. It’s not a question of courage to voice their disagreement but rather of their usual function, original purpose, and tacit agreement.

Well in theory they consider themselves an equalizer in secondary education. My most recent APSI for AP Gov was taught by a Howard professor who believes that through the accessibility of AP programs, minority students are given a leg up that would not exist with out them. And there was actually a good amount of data which substantiated that claim.
Now I can't speak to how true that is but that's how they are trying to present themselves. And so if that is what they believe then they should do something about it.
And the College Board will release the curriculum on 2/1. It would be pretty bold and awful of them to publish a censored version of this class on the first day of Black History Month.

The College Board, along with its SAT, is one of the biggest purveyors of systemic racism, though.
I am not sure how the CB is increasing access to AP classes. I’m sure schools themselves do plenty of gatekeeping, but I have never seen anything to indicate really disrupt systems.

I’m a little dumbstruck that they announced this on the first day of BOTH Black History Month and LGBTQ+ History Month. I knew they’d cave but for some reason that bothers me extra.

Also, I don't really believe the college board's whole shtick but they push it like crazy so... they really can't have it both ways.
All of the ap teachers I know are furious about this.
So with the update today, I googled this story and read about it elsewhere. So Pritzker’s big plan to retaliate against the CB for watering down the course due to FL’s ban… is to reject the AP Af-Am studies course for Illinois? Um. Way to stick it to the College Board there?
The CB statement they believed a lot of the theoretical secondary sources were dense reading isn’t unfair. There were some pretty complex ideas and readings in the original framework that would be so, so challenging. Like, I’m not sure even most AP high schoolers are up for Franz Fanon.
This part of the article is, though— these details… That is definitely something. Not sure how someone even begins to approach James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, or bell hooks without “Queer life.” It’s also pretty cute they remind everyone to keep censoring at the end there. All hail the mighty AP exam.
the College Board seemed to opt out of the politics. In its revised 234-page curriculum framework, the content on Africa, slavery, reconstruction and the civil rights movement remains largely the same. But the study of contemporary topics — including Black Lives Matter, incarceration, queer life and the debate over reparations — is downgraded. The subjects are no longer part of the exam, and are simply offered on a list of options for a required research project. And even that list, in a nod to local laws, “can be refined by local states and districts.”
I wish I had a detailed copy of the CED from before and after to compare.
CB is just trying to cover their ass with the backlash they are facing.
I mean DeSantis’ nonsense was not the first time queer history and CRT have been political punching bags over the past year or so. Regardless of which horrifying fascist they were attending to when they made the changes it’s equally horrifying to me. It’s not like DeSantis invented this, he’s mirroring trends happening all over the country.
One "patriot" group calling for volunteers to monitor their schools. They of course promote all sorts of conspiracy theories, but this one was new to me. Apparently Bill Gates is single handedly responsible for rising egg prices in order to promote artificial eggs. These people are insane yet somehow powerful enough to be incredibly dangerous.
""More things found in the Library," their site breathlessly reads. The offensive materials they flagged? Michelle Obama's memoir and a history of Barack Obama's presidency."

It does hurt the CB though because they won't get that $$. Instead, schools should be partnering with local community colleges and universities to offer their students actual college courses without the CB restrictions.
People need to start boycotting FL. Don't have your business events there, don't send your kids to college there, don't go to Disney, etc.
The only thing I think will stop this (because voting hasn't helped) is uproar from the business community.
it is. A good friend of mine seriously considered it back when it was under the umbrella of USF. It's a unique college, no grades exactly but rather written evaluations. It's known for innovative coursework, too. Exactly why it's a target of gqp
