I don’t see this posted in here. The original article did not identify the murderer. We already knew guns would never be part of the conversation. Now that this is out, I don’t suppose that their usual go-to of mental health will be a focus, either. 😭
Murderer identified as transgender. Murderer was armed with three guns, including a semi-automatic rifle, and was shot dead by police. Nashville Police Chief John Drake said the shooter had conducted surveillance, and that maps of the building showing entry and exit points were found at a nearby home.

I do not have the emotional bandwidth to weather this latest development but I’m gonna be real clear that people need to tread FUCKING CAREFULLY.
There are layers here that many of you will never understand so maybe just pause before typing, friends.
NewOrleans they’ll make it about mental health bc they’ve spent 2 years and millions of dollars on a campaign (that is so far working) to argue that trans people are too crazy and unstable to be able to make their own health care decisions. But yeah… not the usual way, that’s for sure.

This is a really conservative school and church. Friends were members, and I went to one's wedding there (complete with 30 minute sermon on the obey part of her vows).
I feared the shooter might have been someone harmed by their ideology.
Since the christofascist gunnuts can't spin this to say if only there were prayers in school, I have no doubt this tragedy will fuel even more anti trans propaganda.

Spending time analyzing the motives of the shooters has proven to be exactly 0% effective in preventing future gun violence. Were they bullied? Were they mentally ill? Were they sociopaths? Were they wearing trench coats? Were they extremists or misogynists or terrorists?
At the end of the day, what deep lessons did we uncover that have made our country safer?
We need better gun control. Period.
All conservatives want to do is deflect blame for their failed gun policies. We’re not even 90 days into 2023 and there have been 130 mass shootings.

And more specifically 13 school shootings - which is 1 a week so far this year.
Right wing extremists using this shooting as "proof" that trans folks are dangerous confuse the hell out of me. Why can they not see that by that reasoning what we have to fear most is white men - who commit the majority of school shootings.

This is really close to home for me. One of the children lives in my area. The more I hear the more I’m defeated. I just want my kids to go in public and not ask if they are going to be shot.
Washington Post has an article out today about the damage an AR-15 can do and they comment about how few people really know. Well - good - put this story out so that more and more people REALLY understand the damage these guns can do. They aren't for protection. They are designed to kill. Full stop.

Bingo. These shooters have come from all different backgrounds from all across the country. The ONE common denominator is they used guns to go into schools (and other public places) and kill children/teachers.
It's the largest fucking elephant in the room and it's continued to be ignored because money, lobbies, NRA, etc.

I knew this bullshit was coming. Most serial killers are white males also, but who do they want you to be afraid of? Anyone who doesn't look like them. The mental gymnastics used is just mind blowing really.
Warning- body can footage has been released by local media. I cannot watch and have zero plans. I just want people to know it is floating around.
I haven’t watched it but I had a meeting with my district’s superintendent this morning. She’d already watched it and said it is upsetting but does not show any kids if that is helpful to someone who may wish to see it. Sadly, this is considered a “good” police response to an active shooter, as opposed to Uvalde.

This is correct. It doesn't show any children at all, and while you do see the shooter get taken down what I saw it was blurred out. The police response felt like it was what it should be watching it, but who knows.

I do not want to watch anyone die. I wish the police footages would not be released

Right, there are remarkably few consistences between the circumstances that led to the shootings. And yet the scenes play out with eerie similarity across the country.
The common denominator is right in front of their faces.
I have a request, can the shooting thread subject titles please include the city/state or general location, instead of just "another school shooting"?
I get a pit in my stomach thinking it could be near me, that the post will be the first I've heard of it, and I start to panic.
My son is in preschool, not in an elementary school, but some evil fuck could easily choose his daycare next. This is a worry I have (along with most parents).
Changed the title. As someone who also has kids in school, I completely relate and understand and apologize for not clarifying in the title.
Could you also add a date to the title? I remember a previous thread popped up weeks later because of an update. I thought it was a new shooting in the same location rather than just an update.

Done, but how fucking awful a country are we that we need to add dates and cities to clarify which mass shooting we’re talking about?

Particularly someone in a minoritized demographic that is so often subject to violence and is being increasingly attacked in this state/country. There are sick people watching it just for that reason and I want no part of it.

The 28-year-old who killed three children and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville was under care for an emotional disorder and had legally bought seven firearms that were hidden at home, Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake said Tuesday.
The parents of the murderer spoke to police and said they knew the murderer had bought and sold one weapon and believed that was the extent of it.
"The parents felt the murderer should not own weapons," the chief said.
My school just had a (optional, after contract hours, unpaid) training with some cops last week about school shootings. Seems crazy to me that we’ve never actually had a training, just received a printout of protocols of what to do in a lockdown situation.
The cops didn’t sugarcoat ANYTHING and it was pretty horrifying seeing diagrams of some school shooting building layouts and the green dots were the kids who lived, the yellows were injured, and the reds were the ones killed.
I just have so many thoughts and fears, for my students, me, and my own children who attend a different school. There’s literally nothing we can do if a gunman gets inside and we are walking to lunch. Or playing out at recess. Or dismissing out our door (our kids all walk mostly). The ONLY thing that will help is no more fucking guns, Jfc.

I came to this conclusion a few years ago. I am not safe in my classroom if someone comes in with a gun. There is nowhere to go and nowhere to hide. It’s absolutely insane.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

You can always try to grab the gun if you encounter a shooter. Yup. Or get some bee spray for your room, apparently.

My DD is in high school. The first day of class her teacher showed all the kids a filing cabinet drawer full of scissors and the bottom full of larger rocks. He said if something were to happen for the kids to grab one of each to throw at the attacker. He also had a metal table that he plans to flip and block the door. She came home shook. I was in awe he had carefully planned something out. It was later told he had a college friend in one of the school shootings. He was planning based on fear and tragedy on a personal level.

As a part of ALICE training we are all supposed to have a detailed plan in place if a shooter was to enter our building. Mine is similar to that teacher but we were never instructed to tell our students the plan. It's a fucking terrifying thing to think about.

DD is worried. She said every time they do the active shooter drill she has classmates who won't be quiet and she's scared the shooter will find them because they'll be heard. Things the children of the country worry about, fuck.
