I drank at work, as part of work, when I worked with wine grapes. But that very often involved spitting it out, so I guess it wasn't really "drinking."
Unless there's some sort of circumstance like that, or a party, I feel like it's at the minimum highly inappropriate to be drunk or to be drinking at work. I had to go through the disciplinary process with an employee that I highly suspected was having issues with alcohol. There were a lot of signs that she was, and I know she had a breathalyzer on her car not too long before I became her supervisor. There were a few days that I wondered if she was still drunk from the night before and a lot of days where she seemed to be extremely hung over.
If an employee was drunk at my workplace, the first thing I would do is not allow them to see patients and I would call HR for further guidance. Depending on your employee guidelines, it could mean immediate termination.
I have not witnessed an employee obviously drunk at work, but I have suspicions that an employee may have a problem and is good at hiding it. As a manager, I have been instructed by HR to document document document.

Yep. And as HR, I’d advise you on the reasonable suspicion guidelines, then if he met them, order a drug test. If he failed, I’d fire his ass. This is an easy one - lol!

Well it seems as though the person was fired and they were definitely intoxicated from alcohol. Like falling down and had to be put in a cab instead of on the train Hopefully they're ok.
I was a psychology major in college and loved my organizational psych classes and always thought I wanted to be in HR. But over the past several years so glad I did not go down that path! I'm not even talking about this situation cause this situation is more sad, but damn dealing with people who have no common sense or home training must be exhausting for HR!

it is... it is sometimes really sad what we see in our field, though sometimes in other cases really humorous stories come from it. I hope in this case it is a wake up call for this person and they are able to get themselves some help.
There are pretty much two cases where someone whose job isn’t wining and dining people can drink or look intoxicated and stay in my book. One is something medical that looks like intoxication but isn’t (think undiagnosed diabetes), the others is something like what happened to DH years ago. A client brought him a cookie that he happily snacked on before he realized it was a pot cookie. Once he did, he called me immediately and we talked though telling the front desk he had a sudden illness, having them cancel him patients and I picked him up. But boy was he paranoid as I walked him out of the building that day.

All I'm going to add to this is that it would be very different in the UK, though falling down drunk would not be tolerated (but not an instant firing unless they were in their probation period due to laws around firing). Just being tipsy regularly in many professional fields is, unfortunately, not unusual after lunch, but this is changing a lot.
