I remember when this film first came out, there was a lengthy discussion on the boards about the white savior aspect of the film, in addition to Oher's own comments at the time that took issue with how some things were portrayed. Well, it looks like there was a whole lot more deceit at work. This is so disgusting.
For a second I wondered if Sandra Bullock would offer Oher any of the money she made from the movie, but then I remembered that she married a neo-Nazi, so I guess she probably won’t.

I would be surprised if she donated. The movie clearly infantilized Michael Oher and yet she received accolades and praise.

As an aside didn't her partner just die from ALS?
This feels weird. The villains in this story are the people who tricked and preyed on Michael Oher, who promised him love and family and used him. Not sure why Sandra Bullock is getting thrown into the fray 5 comments in.
The most damning paragraph in this lays out that the family used their own agent when they were negotiating rights for the movie and he used a different agent, who was close friend of the family. These people are scum.

I guess I’m just feeling really icky about the movie and everyone who profited from it. I wonder how much the people involved in the movie were aware of just how bad the Tuohys were. And, definitely not fair to Sandra, but I can’t think of the Tuohys without seeing her face. I was not aware that her partner just passed away. (The neo-nazi I was referring to was Jesse James, not her current partner)
ETA: I apologize for detailing the thread. I just feel so horrible for Oher and so angry at all who took advantage of him.
Wow, I can't wait to hear their explanation as to why they told Oher that when one is over 18, you can't adopt and the closest you can get is a conservatorship.

I 100% believe him. They made him out to be a bumbling idiot, I hope he sues them and gets a lot of money and then makes a sequel from his perspective and makes bank off of that.
I remember when the movie came out hearing that Oher was upset that it portrayed him as having to be taught how to play football by Tuohys, and generally being dumb. And I remember it all being very white saviory and uncomfortable.
this is so much worse.
I hope the courts force them to cough up actual facts and documents regarding what money they made off of him. Getting him to sign a conservatorship is some slimy bullshit.
Sandra Bullock isn’t the villain in this story. She also divorced said neo-Nazi 13 years ago but what does that have to do with how Oher was exploited by the Tuohys and their legal team?
Maybe after she’s had some time to mourn the death of her partner of the last eight years, she’ll make a statement, but putting any culpability on her, regardless of how minute, seems very misplaced.

I had to tell my H the same thing last night when he told me about this article. It was super weird that he in any way thought the actress had any culpability in how awful the real Tuohys are.

Totally agree with this.... Michael Lewis, on the other hand, may have been wise to fact check his book prior to publishing.

Seems so wild! I wonder what the qualifiers were for it, since he was 18? Def very shady, and why didn’t they revoke it once he graduated HS, etc…? I’m not expecting you to have the answers, just thinking out loud. Pretty terrifying you can keep a fully functional adult under one of these!
It sounds like he agreed to it and signed for it himself because they told him it was an alternative to adoption.
“The person with a disability or other challenge only needs to sign the proper legal documents to grant the conservatorship, as Oher did in August 2004.”
It’s such a strange story—were they looking for some child to exploit or did the opportunity arise and they ran with it? How does it even occur to someone to do something like that? Not sharing the money from the movie is beyond.
