I’m confused. We hate McCarthy obviously. Buy Gaetz did all of this because McCarthy wasn’t extreme enough? So they’re going to put up who? Someone more extreme? And if Dems try to make a deal with mod conservatives to put someone up, wouldn’t they just suffer the same fate that McCarthy did?
What a shit show for real.
I think Gaetz said he was doing this because McCarthy worked with Dems to pass the CR.
I think McCarthy knew this could be an outcome if he worked with Dems on the CR.
This is going to be a mess. I don’t think Republicans have anyone they can agree on.
Well who the fuck do they want to elect Speaker if not McCarthy?? You have a continuing resolution re the government shutdown to work on that will expire in 45- days, goddammit.
The names I just heard on CNN are a couple of Toms, Steve Scalise (barf) and yesterday I heard Elise Stefanik (double barf).
Messy mess, indeed.
We HAVE to get out of this MAGA bullshit. I don't have the first clue how, but good grief, what a shitshow.

To put a finer point on it, they’re doing all this BECAUSE they want to force a government shutdown. Not seeking to avoid it.
The Dem strategy is to make the Republican civil war look like an unhinged clown car (not that republicans aren’t doing this just fine themselves.) There is in my opinion a 0% chance that Dems vote for a Republican speaker candidate at this point in the electoral cycle.
I will say one of the worst case outcomes I can see happening here is that this asshole from the super secret succession list of Kevin McCarthy stays interim speaker for quite some time because there isn’t any sort of consensus on an alternative.

Can bills be passed if there is a temp or no? Thanks.

I assume so. But I also don’t think a temp will have any meaningful control over their caucus (not that McCarthy really did either.)
I'm scrolling the updates at WaPo (missing the old Twitter where I used to go get takes on this sort of thing!) and seeing several saying McCarthy will likely run for speaker again. Here's one example with excerpt:
Speaking to reporters after the vote to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) “shouldn’t be in the Republican Party.”
He said Republicans plan to meet later tonight to discuss the next steps, but he expects McCarthy to be nominated and eventually become speaker again...
My H asked why all of the Democrats voted to oust McCarthy, knowing what would happen. I didn't know how to answer that. Jayapal said tonight on CNN that no Democrat would ever vote for a Republican speaker, but I didn't hear her address the reason for voting to oust KM. I'm sure both H and I appear very dumb in this moment, but I am trying to learn.
I wish I had a time machine so I could go forward 20 years from now and see how bad historians laugh at us. (that is if things actually get better but I truly do not know how much worse it could get.)
In 20 years I think the whole world will look back on this time and say how the fuck could you not take drastic action to slow down climate change. Instead half the politicians are degenerate clowns and nothing gets done.
History will not be favorable to Rs especially from 2016 and beyond (and I’ve seen a lot of mainstream Reagan blaming for everything wrong with that party so history is finally catching up with him).

I think he’ll run again and we’ll go through 15 rounds, 20, 25 and then they’ll twist Gaetz arm? He does seem pretty relentless though.

I heard they played an interview from Sunday where Kevin was on CBS blaming Democrats for all of this. They also don’t like or trust him and if they are gonna bail him out, they want something for it.
Once again we find ourselves in unprecedented times.
I keep thinking about the election prediction thread and how it’s impossible to predict even a year out. Any and every day something crazy can happen to change the outcome.

I assume because he was playing politics all this time and they were not here to bail him out. My optimistic side says that the more moderate (ish) Republicans might try to nominate someone that they can get the Dems to vote for. The MAGA crazy block was 8 people today, right? So they can keep calling for a Speaker vote but if someone relative palatable is in the role, it won't matter.
This is my hope. I know it's not likely. I think the government will shut down in November.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Kevin on this presser blaming democrats and saying it was a political decision to join the 8. Um yeah no shit like the R’s wouldn’t have done the same if this was reverse. Just leave. You literally agreed in Jan to have 1 person to bring a motion

No, it’s a good question because there’s definitely risk involved.

I recommend following @sharonsaysso on Instagram. She explains things in a way I can understand easily & also accepts & answers a lot of questions. She’s a former HS Govt teacher.
Anyway, my take what she said about Hakeem Jeffries’s letter to the Dems is basically, “They made their bed, now they can lay in it. Let the country see what a mess they’ve made of their party.” And also, I think Democrats recognize that the Republican Party has to fall apart before they can become functional…so the house can become functional as a whole.
My pipe dream is that Democrats will be able to sway a few moderate Republicans who aren’t running for Re-election to side with them and vote for a moderate Dem as speaker. No idea who that would be. I’d love to see Jeff Jackson get more attention, but he’s way too new.

As one of his first acts as the acting speaker, Rep. Patrick McHenry ordered former Speaker Nancy Pelosi to vacate her Capitol hideaway office by Wednesday, according to an email sent to her office viewed by POLITICO.

I follow historian Heather Cox Richardson on fb and on her live chat today (before the vote) and she said the same thing. Basically, the Dems helped him and saved the country from a shutdown and got shit on all over the media by McCarthy, so now they're allowing him to be hoisted on his own petard. He's the one that conceded to the MAGA Republicans the right to do this exact thing. The fact that he thought it wouldn't bite him in the ass...

What an asshole....like was this just about a personal grievance with her? If McCarthy didn't kick her out...what's this dude's problem?
Also, she was in CA for Feinstein's funeral & this seems especially like an asshole move if McHenry really should be focusing on other things...
