Saudade I start right off with first name in emails and when directly speaking to them because we are equals as adults. When talking to DS about them I do Mrs. Lastname. I've been an employee of three school districts on & off since 2010 so maybe that changes my viewpoint. *shrug* Right now DS' teacher is a coworker of mine so it would be weird to call her Mrs. Lastname. Also I tend to communicate with his teachers a lot because my DS is autistic.
The weather is having its last gasp of summer temps this weekend and then we will wave goodbye happily. I'm so ready to be done with tank tops & capris. Jeans, t-shirt and zip up jacket are my favorite outfits. And I run hot so it's nice to stop sweating excessively once the temps get down to the 60s.
This is interesting because David's teachers have always called me Mrs.MyLastName when they address me in an email. I've never had a teacher call me by my first name so it would be weird for me to address them by their first name.

Yeah, I agree this is all regional and people do what is done in their area, but the whole equal as adults seems odd. Do you not refer to doctors as Dr Lastname then?
I saw George Lopez last night and it was a really fun show! I took a tumble on Tues and landed on my backside but it’s still really bothering me now. Sit to stand, getting on and off the toilet, etc…
Can you break your tailbone and not know it? Or am I just old and my body is breaking down? Dr. Google says only an X-ray will tell. I was walking down some stairs but missed the last 4, so I didn’t fall from any great height but would you go to urgent care for something dumb like “I might have broken my coccyx”?
I broke my tailbone a few years ago and it really hurt for about 5 weeks. I was in New Zealand when it happened so I didn't have it examined until I got home about 3 weeks later. I have a long history of back issues and was concerned that I did something major. The X-ray showed it was broken but healing correctly and there was no other spinal impact, so there was nothing to do but wait it out. If you have other health issues related to spine or joints it wouldn't hurt to get checked out.
It's supposed to be in the high 70s today, which is kind of ridiculous for the Seattle area in October. But it also means we'll have a great day outside today at Salmon Days. Although I think it will also mean more people might come to Salmon Days and it will be even more crowded than usual.
I've gotten 2/4 of the Connections right off the bat. Still working on the last two (which supposedly one of them is the most straight forward, according to the color codes).
Do you call your kids’ teachers by their first time when you’re talking to them, like at conference time or when emailing?
It depends. When talking to my kid (or in a school-related email) I use Ms. Lastname. In person I call her by her first name, because that’s how she introduced herself to me on meet-the-teacher night. But my husband also works at the school and knows her well, so first names don’t seem super-weird to me.
One of C’a friends invited him to a college football game today, so H and I have the house to ourselves all afternoon. It’s beautiful out, so we grabbed lunch, and now we’re just hanging at the house.
My H and I went to brunch at a new spot today. It was good, but service was VERY slow and they don't have their liquor license yet apparently so the brunchy cocktails we'd planned on didn't happen. They got slammed with some kind of kids sports team right when we got there, so I won't hold it against them.
Then I finally decorated for fall, and I tried gluing back together the cabinet that fell apart last week. Now we are watching playoff baseball and will switch to college football later. I need to grade papers, too. The weather seems to have turned nice out so I'm a little bummed that I'm not going to be outside - I have some fall gardening related stuff I really wanted to do, but IDK if I'll have time this weekend or not. My friend is visiting from OOT next week so I'd really prefer things look nice - but also time is really limited between now and then.

I meant we are on equal footing because in this case they are my coworkers. People usually address coworkers by first name especially when introduced to as that.
The kids all call the adults in the building Mr or Mrs/Ms. Lastname. I am Mrs. Lastname to the students. The adults call me Macmars. If coworkers & I are conversing in front of students we call each other Mr or Mrs/Ms Lastname.
Maybe the school district I'm in is less formal. *shrug* When I was employed by previous school districts I wasn't also a parent in the district so this is the first time I've been both (as of spring 2022).
ETA: I admit that due to my background of being a kid of two retired career teachers I spent tons of time in the schools with my parents. When I got to high school I was invited to call my parents' coworkers by their first names. I spent weekends and hours after school was over helping my mom (a retired kinder teacher) throughout my growing up years. I got to know many teachers in the district pretty well over the years. Now as an employee in the same district my parents taught in and I attended K-12 I still know many of the teachers and staff in the district. There are 3 teachers at the school I work at that taught alongside one or both of my parents for many years.
tacokick , I am obviously very dense on this question, but what does that mean in terms of an edge dent?
Saudade , I always use Mrs./Ms./Mr. for teachers in email unless we’ve already established a relationship. In person I just wouldn’t use anything.
I don’t think a dent on the very edge would be deep enough to be a concern. The dents that are worrisome are normally like a quarter inch deep or more. That said, if it worries you, I’d toss it! I hate to waste food but it’s an easily and cheaply replaced item.
ETA and if the seal was broken, it’s probably spoiled even without it being a botulism risk and will probably look or smell strange.
How do you decide on the safety of canned food with dents? USDA says a deep dent is one you can lay your finger into, but I can’t visualize what that means. I think my diced tomatoes can has a small dent on the bottom edge, but the curve of my finger fits, so maybe that’s deep? I’ll probably end up not using it, but it seems wasteful.
I open it. Spoiled cans will kind of explode outward (explode isn't the word I want. It's not that dramatic). Cans that are still good will kind of inhale. Again, not the word I'm looking for 😅
Basically, if the can sucks in it's fine. If it pushes out I toss.
macmars45, That all makes sense. I guess it was "equal as adults" that was throwing me off but I get it.
This is so timely, but I've been communicating with the band director at David's school via phone because we're taking him out of cello so he can be a part of the school band and when the band director emailed me today, she started with "Hi Melissa,..." LOL. Weird! Maybe teachers have called me by my first name in the past and I'm misremembering. Anyway, I'm one to just follow the lead of the teacher, I guess because I responded using her first name.

We are at our first of I’m sure many tournaments this weekend. Soccer for now, probably hockey going forward. DD’s team won both of their games today, then they have one tomorrow and another after that is a question mark in the schedule. Literally not one parent knows how this works. Is there a final? What do they win? If they win the first game tomorrow, what’s next? Many have older club soccer siblings and still it’s a mystery. If they win, do they just high five each other and go home? Bragging rights? DD is convinced there’s a giant trophy somewhere in this and I don’t know how to tell her we don’t even know if there are medals for winning. Today is also H’s bday and DD is bitterly disappointed that there has been no great surprise celebration for him. She’s very dedicated to celebrating birthdays!
Yesterday, my friend came over to paint my fencing mask. I think it looks incredible! Today, I put an automotive clear coat on it. This isn’t just to be cool, but without paint, it’s easy to see someone’s face, and read what they may do next (or, just that deer in the headlights look).
And then, today same friend has a flat tire about 5 miles from us and was panicking. So H and I loaded up and went out to assist. Pretty sure we provided nothing but moral support (he was about 50% done when we got there, but H took off the tire and put on the donut).
Tomorrow, I have a tournament. 😬 Luckily, this one is only 20 minutes away. And one of my buddies is competing, too. And another one showing up for moral support. I’m still in awe I have friends that aren’t still from college.
starburst604. DD's swim club does an hour long meeting every year where they explain how every aspect of the club works from practices to meets etc. It's for new families and it helps so much. I wish they'd do that for DS1's cc team, but I kind of think the coach makes so many on the fly decisions it would be hard to do it. Crossing my fingers there is a giant trophy for your DD.
Can confirm that getting both the Covid booster and the flu shot at once was a mistake. I feel like a bus hit me. At least it's done??
SAME. I got both Friday morning and I am exhausted and useless today.
Yes same, second year in a row I did both covid and the flu shot and I felt just a little better this time than last but I skipped going out to dinner with the family. I have been tired all day with chills. I know it's not the flu shot--I've never had issues with it.
I started my second job today and holy cow, the winery was soooo busy. Also, these people seem to have quite the disposable income, they weren’t hesitant to spend it!

I had a last-minute girls night out with a few friends and it was fun. We were originally planning to all see each other at the HS football game, but it was rainy and cold, and since none of us have varsity players, we decided to go out for a drink and apps instead.
DS's fever was in the 103 range for a couple of hours yesterday, so that was a bit scary (although he was coherent - if he had gotten lethargic or incoherent I would've taken him to urgent care or ER). I was trying to hold off on giving him ibuprofen to let his body temp kill off whatever virus it was, but after a couple of hours of it being that high, I have him an Advil and had him take a warm bath with epsom salts. That seemed to help, because his fever went down to 100, and his temp is almost back to normal today.
Both of my kids had competitions for their sports yesterday and it was sort of brutal. They are both kids who don’t love attention and aren’t really competitive in spirit. One is a gymnast and one competed ninja warrior for the first time. DD did gymnastics for basically her whole life until she was unwell last year and injured and had to quit as a level 7. She just made her “comeback” with the high school team after not competing since December. DS has done ninja for several years as a class and his coach recently pushed him to join the team. I died a little inside watching because he did so poorly (and has 2 big rips and missed 2 weeks of training due to being sick so it was last min he would even try it). Anyway, this all to say that he got in the car and told me it was awesome and he was so glad coach convinced him to go. He learned so much, got to chee kn his teammates, etc. DD got on the beam and and out on the floor and threw skills she wasn’t sure she could still do a couple of weeks ago. I’m melting with pride for their efforts and attitudes BUT also it’s so hard to watch your kids struggle. 2 things can be true, right?
I was wondering if anyone was having a rough go of the flu and Covid shot at the same time. Sounds like it! I have to schedule mine. Covid shot has crushed me each time so trying to plan accordingly!
