“Israelis and Palestinians must have equal measures of security and prosperity. I support the right of the Palestinian people to dignity, freedom, and self-determination. Hamas does not represent these aspirations.”
Honestly? Fuck anything she and Biden say. For the last 10 days they have done nothing to show that is what they really think. Quite the opposite, actually.
Supporting Dignity. Freedom. What a joke.
Thanks for the $100 million in aid, though. That will rebuilt, what, one hospital? Feed the people that survive for a week? So generous after helping destroy the majority of the strip and no end in site and murder thousands of innocent people.
I honestly really appreciate your reply and perspective.
I was thinking that it’s better than what uncle Joe said, but it’s still a mess. All of it. And my thought was “at least…” and then I realized that anything that started with at least still pretty much sucks. I’m not sure how to come back from the missteps here. I appreciate their efforts to do better, but also, why didn’t they start there?
It’s all a wreck. It’s better, but I’m not sure that low bar is something to cheer that we stepped over. If that makes sense.
I have a stupid question: Why isn't the international community pressuring Israel to allow evacuation and aid by sea rather than focusing only on the Egyptian border?
I have a stupid question: Why isn't the international community pressuring Israel to allow evacuation and aid by sea rather than focusing only on the Egyptian border?
I’m not sure but from a purely logistical perspective how will an evacuation by sea work? Where will the refugees go? Which countries are going to pick them up and take them to a safe place? I’m genuinely curious about how that would work.
I definitely think that aid can be brought in via sea and that it should but also consider that it’s exceptionally expensive to do that. More expensive than land convoys entering the region. Israel needs to reconnect with its humanity and set a conditional ceasefire so that civilians can be cared for.

The US spent a lot of time negotiating with Egypt about evacuating citizens through that border. While I know refugee evacuations are very loaded and difficult (since the world doesn't take in refugees easily), I don't understand why the Egyptian border is the primary point of evacuation for people who are not refugees and have a country to go to. Once you are bringing in a means of evacuation, I'd think it could also be a way for necessary aid supplies to arrive. Not logistically easy or cheap - but nothing about this is easy.
It's a huge burden on the host economy, which is already massively struggling (Egypt, and to some extent Jordan). Egypt also has upcoming elections. Not making it right/wrong, just facts.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Israel will agree to a ceasefire as long as hostages remain in Gaza. It’s a non-starter as long as this is also a rescue mission. One “condition” would have to be their release.

I don’t think that’s a stupid question at all. Another non-stupid question I have is, why should Palestinians be “evacuating” at all?
The majority of the people are *already* registered and recognized as refugees, who live in Gaza & the West Bank and now they are being displaced again. And Israel have made it clear their intention for them and their land.

It might have something to do with the fact that the main (if not only) port in Gaza is in Gaza City, and people looking to leave were already told to go to the Rafah crossing, on the opposite side of the territory. Bringing them back to Gaza City at this point would be a nightmare. I don’t know what access to the sea is like from the southern part of Gaza, and if that’s even feasible.

According to an urgent message from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Israeli occupation forces have demanded the evacuation of Al-Quds Hospital, which is currently treating 400 patients and providing refuge for around 12,000 displaced civilians.
fryjack2, I've not had a day off in a couple of weeks, so i haven't been on the board. I have also been quieter than I'd like in my in-person life on this topic.
I'm sorry to you, other Palestinian posters, and other Jewish posters, that silence from so many like me has felt like a lack of support.
I have so many friends who post various things on social media that indicate they stand with Israel. And I see mutual friends who I cherish who are Jewish say thank you, because the Hamas attack was terrifying to them, and felt to them like an attack on Jews as a whole. I love these friends and extend my sadness and compassion to them.
And then I see perspectives like yours and some creators I've followed and grown to care about (dang parasocial relationships) who have been educating people on the plight of Palestinians in occupied territories for years. One couple in particular had just earlier this year posted videos of a warehouse in Gaza full of aid supplies (primarily for women and children) that their platform funding had helped put together. The warehouse and everything in it was destroyed by Israeli bombing yesterday, and two of their employees were killed, while stocking hygiene supplies.
But when I see people speak out about the atrocities of that kind of action and the cutting off of all resources, we are accused of being antisemitic.
It's a false dichotomy, but an understandably instinctual one after both Jewish and Muslim people have been treated horribly by white western Europeans like my ancestors for centuries.
Therefore, so many of us bite our tongues or reach out directly to people we know who are affected, but don't take any kind of social media stand out of fear of offending or hurting parties who will interpret that showing of support to be against their side.
Thank you for the reminder to write my congresspeople. I've not done that yet and am way overdue. They probably won't GAF but I should at least try.
I've also learned about a few books I'm committed to reading. Two are below:
Palestine: Peace, not Apartheid, by Jimmy Carter The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, by Ilan Pappe
My heart and best wishes are for all the victims of violence and atrocities.
I also want to thank fryjack2 for the plea to reach out to elected reps (which seems like duh now but I hadn’t thought of it prior). I reached out to my senators (Warren and Markey) and rep (Ayanna Presley) and received a note back from Presley (or her staffers more likely) thanking me for my outreach and pledging commitment towards preservation of all civilian life and work towards a ceasefire.
But when I see people speak out about the atrocities of that kind of action and the cutting off of all resources, we are accused of being antisemitic.
I’m not trying to pick on you, and I’m sorry that you’re the person who I’m quoting with this rant.
But I am REALLY sick of this sentiment coming up over and over again.
Do people really think Jews are so dumb that we don’t know the difference between support for the innocent Palestinian people and antisemitism? Are we that fragile that we can’t distinguish between intellectual discussion on a complex issue and being attacked?
Again, I’m really not trying to be a jerk, but I’m sick of people thinking liberal Jews are the tone police when all we really want is for our humanity to be seen and for our history not to be erased.
If YOU (general white Christian you) feel like you’re being silenced from expressing your feelings these days, imagine what it feels like to be Jewish? I mean talk about white fragility.
And everything single thing I’m saying goes for Palestinian Americans too. For every antisemitic space, there’s an anti-Palestinian/Islamophobic space. Maybe that’s why I think we understand each other sometimes better than white people understand us. We are BOTH oppressed people with centuries-old claims to the same tiny parcel of land that’s 290 miles long and 85 miles wide. You’ve got terrorists — literal terrorists — against batshit crazy politicians (who’ve also felt like they’ve had to think and operate like terrorists because it’s been their survival on the line.) It’s possible to hold space in your heart for that entire tragedy of a region without being “accused” of anything.

Respectfully, no, no one is saying all Jews are dumb, but you also don’t speak for all Jews. Because yes, absolutely I have witnessed people being called antisemitic over speaking out about the atrocities being done to the Palestinian people. I know Jews that have said flatten them all to the ground. I know Jews who will argue the very propagandistic points of Hamas hide behind human shields, or just say again and again what do you expect Israel to do? And plenty more.
So yes, some people really *cant* have an intellectual discussion on a subject without being attacked.
I didn’t say “complex issue” because that’s a falsehood too. There’s nothing complicated about it. Israel has occupied and commits genocide against a people. That’s it. That’s what’s complex to you. It’s very simple to me. It’s wrong. It shouldn’t be happening.
You say both oppressed people want a piece of land. But someone’s oppression from the world does not give them the right to oppress others. Others that are currently (or were) there.

The hypocrisy of white Americans somehow believing they have more moral right living on this land we call the United States than the Jewish people have to a land that was theirs since Biblical times. We literally celebrate Passover about how we escaped slavery(!) in Egypt to return to our land, and then the desecration of our holiest temple during Hanukkah.
I don’t agree with what Israel is doing. I wish everyone could live on the same land peacefully. And yes, there is fiery rhetoric and hate speech on both sides — but again, Jews and Palestinians know the difference between bigotry and real discussion.
I’ve said this 100 times. I do not agree with the occupation. It’s the result of decades of the same fucking mess we’re seeing now but that doesn’t make it right. But let me be VERY clear: telling a Jewish person their history is so easy for you to reconcile — that’s clearly inflammatory. That’s clearly “gentile-splainin.” Because what you’re saying is that either 1) the Jews should have never been allowed to return to their land after the Holocaust or 2) in every war since 1948, you wish the Jews had lost. And if the Jews had lost, it would have been THEIR genocide. THIS is why people say antisemitism and antiZionism can’t be separated.
ETA: And if you’re thinking, Well, what will it take to get to a place where everyone can live peacefully side by side with neither occupying or attacking the other? That is exactly the right question, and unfortunately one with no easy answer. The working theory is that Israel starting to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia is part of what set off Hamas this time — Hamas, whose stated goal and mission is to wipe the Jews off the face of the earth. But yes, this is so easy. (I mean, if Jared Kushner could do it 🙄…)
The hypocrisy of white Americans somehow believing they have more moral right living on this land we call the United States than the Jewish people have to a land that was theirs since Biblical times.
This is such a bad comparison. Because of course Americans should understand the awfulness of colonization they put on Native Americans. But in current day we can’t actually say Native Americans have a right by birth to take any and all land back. That they could just decide one day they actually get to either destroy peoples homes or evict people from their homes. What?

That’s great. I’m truly think that’s great. It’s not the opinion of everyone though and that’s what I have issues with.
I like that a large majority of Israelis are mad at their government. I think it would be helpful to everyone to express how they disagree with the occupation just as you do. They are upset at their government for allowing terrorists infiltration. Which is completely understandable, but the upset seems to stop there from what I am seeing.
But let me be VERY clear: telling a Jewish person their history is so easy for you to reconcile — that’s clearly inflammatory.
Sorry but I disagree. Just like Americans need to reconcile their part to play in this. How our taxes are spent on supplying weapons, now our government loves to have a little middle eastern outpost so we can keep a closer eye. How our countries are mutually benefiting each other which is why our country turns a blind eye to certain things because we want to keep that relationship. How the UK has a big part to play in the problem too. I can reconcile and call out my countries history very easily.
I love how a poster gets called out and then reincarnates herself. We see you, IceBlink.
Was I called out? No, I was called a bigot for saying I cannot hold intellectual discussion about this subject with family members. But according to you ‘all Jews know the difference’ and don’t call people antisemitic for that, right? So which is it?

OK, so you have a problem with the Law of Return?
And why shouldn’t indigenous people here have that right? How can you seriously be like, oh, that’s so awful that our forefathers colonized them, but now they just have to put up with it and live peacefully on reservations because the white people are here now? And then not own your own hypocrisy?

I was trying to use nicer words but no, I would not be okay with people being displaced who then had to find refuge in an open air prison that then began to be bombed to the ground. Murdering of people and half of them children. No water or electricity or fuel. What world do you live in where any group of people should be allowed to do that because of their history?

This is the kind of discussion that I’m here for.
But you embed your words with such hurtfulness. You still haven’t said why Jews aren’t the indigenous people in this situation (truly, Middle Eastern politics are a Rorschach test of who was here first); you basically said the Law of Return should never have been implemented.
And then you wonder why, even when you’re making good points, you’re being called out for your inflammatory views. It’s because you want to throw barbs at people who you dismiss as little more than conquerors who deserved their fate. And then have the GALL to gaslight me and say I don’t understand antisemitism when I see it.

So I’m confused.
I will answer your question when you answer mine, which I posed first. Why do you think the Jews don’t have a right to their country?
Go ahead and tell everyone so they can see you for what you are.

I can’t answer that question because I don’t think that. 🤷🏻♀️
Edit: Honestly this was a silly response. I will post later when I can.

I’m also pretty suspicious about the name “Mean Princess” when “Jewish American Princess” is a common insult hurled at Jews. And then add in “mean” when her SOLE purpose for making a new account was to engage in an inflammatory way on this issue.
But please gaslight me AGAIN about how Jews don’t understand antisemitism. And I see everyone on here who doesn’t call it out when they see it.
