Okay, I just read the rest of the thread. There is no way I would buy gifts for 25 people! I agree with everyone else, if it's not fun, stop doing it! My family stopped exchanging gifts around when my brother and I graduated from college. In the last few years, since there are now grandchildren, we do tend to buy gifts for the kids, because it's fun to buy for them (well, mostly my parents, my brother and I only sometimes buy stuff for each other's kids), but we still don't exchange gifts for the adults. My partner's family sporadically exchanges gifts, and he's in charge of managing that.
When DD was little and prime age for buying fun Christmas gifts my MIL insisted on a list but also got overwhelmed/confused at the options, generally anxious, PLUS wanted the magical “bought the best present from grandma” experience. My “solution” was to shop together at Toys R Us - her, grandpa, H, DD, and me. We were visiting for Thanksgiving, so it was a good option.
Mind you, I did NOT care what she bought but I had been roped into masterminding a magical grandma gift for her granddaughter.
Back then, Toys R Us had rows and rows of floor to ceiling toys - all sectioned by the character - Spider-Man, Dora, Sponge Bob, etc.
So, my DD was around 3 yo and really into Dora the Explorer. So, we trooped over to the section with Dora. My DD pointed to lots and lots of Dora toys at lots and lots of mid-range price points.
This section was next to Sponge Bob, so my MIL ignores everything DD says and decides that she should buy a Sponge Bob toy. Uh, okay?
Hey, MIL, why the hell did you make us all come out here and perform for you if you were just going to disregard everything and pick out some random toy that nobody wants???
I just had to walk away. And then H said, where are you going … ?
When we celebrate with DH’s extended family, it is about 25 people. But I go to Costco and get a generic gift: Pendleton blanket, mugs, etc. and each couple gets that. Then we do shop for the kids. I refuse to think of individual gifts for each adult. We have a few $10 Starbucks gift cards for the inbetween aged kids.
