McMansions for small families. Like 6000 sqft when you are a family of 4. How much space does each person need? That’s like a whole house each!
I obviously have a problem with excess just for the sake of excess.
AND DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON TEARING DOWN PERFECTLY FINE STARTER HOMES (WITH YARD) AND PUTTING UP A MCMANSION THAT TAKES UP THE WHOLE LOT. If we’re moving to pet peeves, this is mine.
Yes. Every time I drive by one I ask "who is storing this stuff? Why? What are they storing? Is it really worth paying to store it?"
I have two IRL examples. My SIL stored secondhand furniture that she got on CL for ten years. She easily could have bought brand new furniture for what she paid in storage fees. My brother lived in a tiny apartment in Denver and stored snow tires and ski equipment or rock climbing equipment depending on the season.
They are constantly building new ones in my metro area.

The moment I had "the world is going to hell" is when I watched them tear down a beautiful home that was housing for a family for storage units.
We need affordable housing in our area and all they build is storage units. It makes me spitting mad.
Not just by you. I live in a small-ish town, there are three storage units in town. I live in a neighborhood off one of our main roads, kinda at the edge of the commercial area. Road is two lanes in either direction with a suicide turn lane in thr center. No light to get into our neighborhood there (go out the back to a side road to get a light to the main road) just a stop sign on the neighborhood road.
We just had A YEAR LONG BATTLE to stop this company from building a new storage facility at the entrance to our neighborhood. They wanted go build a 500 fucking unit facility FIVE FUCKING STORIES TALL at the entrance to our single family home neighborhood. The tallest building in town is 3 stories. THREE. There was a graphic showing how visible the building would be, you'd be able to see it almost anywhere in town that wasnt a valley.
Not only would they be building a 5 story building, taking at least two residental lots from the neighborhood to do it, they also applied for a variance so they could have less parking spots than they were legally supposed to. If they had built it our neighbhood roads would have been all their overflow parking. The neighborhood (spearheaded by the folks who would have been next to the facility) fought HARD against it. Thank god the developer gave up and pulled out of the fight.
My ILs are the storage unit consumers. They never get rid of anything. They are only children and when their parents died, everything from both homes went into storage units. Stuff they get at auctions go into storage units. Furniture and art from the their former homes - they still have two - storage units. They are 84 and still will not get rid of this stuff so at some point it will become our problem and DH will emotionally not be able to get rid of any of it. I honestly hope for some sort of natural disaster.
we have a lot in our area and they always seem to build more.
While there are genuine needs to rent extra space, at the same time - our country is way too focused on “things” and accumulating more and more and more. So - instead of either not buying more shit, or finding a way to get rid of stuff we don’t REALLY need - more storage units it is!
I agree with pixy0stix about buying back Halloween candy. I feel like people give out way more candy now, my kids gets handfuls from every house, it seems. Then so many people do the switch witch or take the candy to the dentist or whatever and what- is it all just being thrown away? It just feels ridiculous to me to have everyone buy and distribute candy just for the candy to be taken and a toy purchased to switch it for, just.. so much consumerism and waste.
Our dentist does the buyback and got 320 pounds collected this year! She works with some local veterans' groups and the candy gets shipped out as part of care packages to troops serving overseas. My kids donate some of their candy each year because it's a good cause.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Troops serving overseas don’t want people’s cast-off Halloween candy (which is usually nasty by the time it gets there) or any kind of Girl Scout Cookie except thin mints, samoas, or tagalongs.

When people refer to items of clothing as "she"...Example : Girl opening a clothing haul on tiktok "She's so soft and luxurious", "She's giving Free People vibes", etc.
When people refer to non-edible items as "delicious" UGH Can we all agree not to use "delicious" as a non-food related adjective?

People around here use storage units because homes are expensive and homes that are somewhat affordable are fairly small without much storage space or garages. That said, it still seems like there are sooo many storage units it’s around and new ones popping up everyday.

Along the lines of designer handbags, I came across a bunch of tiktoks earlier this year about what people have to do to buy a Birkin bag. They basically have to kiss up to the sales associate by making a bunch of other purchases before they're even offered a purse. Some people will spend 20k on scarves and blankets and whatever to have the privilege of purchasing a 10k+ bag. So so stupid.
OMG, me and H went to the weirdest gender reveal- it was one of H's friends and his wife doing the reveal. Apparently she really wanted a girl, talked the whole party about how she just knew it was a girl, then it was revealed that the baby was a boy and she locked herself in her bedroom and loudly sobbed. Me and H were all.....think we're gonna head out now, lol. She had another baby the was a girl and I'm happy for her, but like, maybe don't do a reveal if you're really hoping for a boy or a girl? Idk. It was strange. I told H he will never, ever drag me to shit like that again, lol.

I lurk on the Hermes Game subreddit because I find the whole thing fascinating. They’re bags, they’re nice looking, they’re fine. So when I hear that people are doing $30K pre-spend, or that they’ve dropped thousands and now their sales associate has change and they have to start all over - I just want to flail my arms and shout “WHAT IS THIS”

A friend's husband really wants a Rolex and it sounds like the same process. He's hoping to buy in 2025 and has already started "building a relationship" with a dealer by buying smaller things, checking in regularly, etc. I just can't imagine wanting to spend 20k on a watch that badly.
TikTok - it’s so aggressive, the way it just starts playing videos at you the second you open it. Besides, all the content makes its way to Instagram eventually anyways.
Related to TikTok - reels where people are just dancing and there are completely unrelated words scrolling. What is the purpose of this dance?
Oh, I just thought of another. I like Connections and Wordle, but don’t understand why people post their results on social media.
I love Connections and it cracks me up that no matter how hard they might be, there's always people in the NYT Facebook comments that are all "so easy!" "Got it in two seconds!" "These are so easy they aren't even fun anymore!" lol, stfu

Strong gender/sex preferences don't make sense to me either.

A little light arson could take care of it.
A friend is going thru it with this right now. Her ILs died in quick succession and her DH is an only child. They inherited a house bursting with all the things all the way up to the attic, plus a ton of land with multiple buildings full of crap. Friend is trying to give him grace, but her DH is just moving stuff around. Another friend and I have offered to rent some dumpsters and take care of it as we hold no attachments. We would save photos and anything that looked meaningful, but toss and donate the rest. Their lives will return to their normal level of chaos when they can sell that place. A lit match could solve it all more quickly.

My sister in law and I know we will get stuck doing this for her parents. She and I send the gif of Angela Bassett setting the car on fire a LOT
Brussel sprouts - no amount of butter can make them taste good to me
My sister is always going on about they’re completely different than when we were kids and they’ve cross bred the bitterness out of them so about once a year I try them and send photographic evidence to her that I still detest them. They are cool to grow tho.
They are less bitter than they used to be-- I grew some heirlooms this past year and hoo boy, those were hard to eat.

I did not know this! A FB friend of mine LOVES all things designer and has multiple Birkin bags. And she likes to brag about it on FB. 🙄 but the ways she spends money, I’m sure she has no problem with this!

I bought my grandparent's house from my gpa when he was no longer able to live alone. My gma was a hoarder. We couldn't get anyone to run an estate sale just because of the sheer amount of crap in the house. It took about a month and 5 extra large commercial dumpsters to clear all the shit out of this house.

My sister just went through this. Her in-laws both passed away, and her husband is extremely sentimental. He could throw absolutely nothing away, because at one point in time either his mother or his father touched that item, making it a religious relic.
Making matters worse, maybe, they are building a lake home, and so he kept saying that he wanted to save things for the lake home. It took about a year, but they finally rented a dumpster and started sorting things into giveaway and throwaway piles. They had six full sets of formal china, and four sets of heavy silver that they were never going to use.

I agree with the super long nail confusion. Maybe those people don’t wear contacts? Because ouch. I don’t see how that works otherwise.
Another for me is cartoons for adults. Things like South Park, Family Guy, etc. I will also add that besides a few Disney movies, I also didn’t like watching cartoons as a kid either so maybe it’s just me lol. I hate cartoons.
Along the lines of meat rosettes, I will add any food that is excessively manhandled to look "cute" for a theme.
I'm thinking things like the pretzel + string cheese cut make a fringe+ licorice that people put together to look like a broom at Halloween. Like, yes, those are all foods. But not foods that taste good together and also I don't want you fingering up my food that much before I eat it.
Really any instance of emphasizing the way food looks over the way it tastes (see also, fondant).

The posts about storage units and hoarding relatives are making my chest feel tight. I’d like to amend my original post to include having so much shit.
Good thing I married into a football-obsessed family who tried to move seven boxes of Christmas decorations into a 1000 square foot apartment.
